Firework season is upon us again and my head is starting to pound, I am sure the noise gets louder each year! I wouldn't mind if people would stick to 5th November to let them off but no, they started 31st October and they will go on till the New Year that is what usually happens in our area, there is no respite.
They sound like cannons, I am sure the air attack in World War 1 and 2 wasn't as noisy
I am sorry but I think fireworks should only be available to public displays and NOT individuals, ok you probably disagree with me, but it's not just me, it's the animals I feel for as well, the noises frighten them and I am not surprised, they are loud enough to wake the dead.
But once again it's all about MONEY isn't it. Everything is money, Christmas, fireworks, smoking, alcohol, the government want their pound of flesh and why make rules if it means they get less money to waste?
Do you like fireworks or do you feel that you are listening to world war 3 going on outside?

Wolfie, you know that every year when they do this my babies, my lil dogs are utterly terrified. They think that the world is coming to an end. I dont mean to rain on anyones parade but its very scary to young children and these lil dogs.I also hate it when they do them all night. Its really a loss of sleep for us.I respect their rights but I wish they would be more respectful and have a cut off time so all the rest of us , could sleep.

I like public displays of fireworks. I like them not to be going off if I am trying to be quiet or sleep.

I love fireworks on November 5th at an organised display. We hhave the same problem here and they do seem to get louder each year. I agree with you and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I hate fireworks. They sometimes look pretty but, I have noticed, they seem to get louder and duller. I must have heard 10 separate bangs at the weekend and only saw two flashes. Admittedly, I was inside for most of the time.
I do completely agree with you. They should not be sold to individuals and there should be rules regarding public displays. If I knew for definite that there would be fireworks only on the 5th of November... or even the weekends either side, I could stay home those nights but, as you say, they begin in October and are still about in January. I also have the problem now that I come home from work when it's already dark so there might already be fireworks going off then even though it's not that late.
I must admit that we haven't, so far, had as many as we usually have but that could change over the next few weeks.

I don't have a problem per se with them going off it's just night after night after night, they are incessant and there's no respite, stick to 5th November or if it's a weeknight for the children the closest weekend and that's it, end of... NO MORE!!!! If it wasn't about money the government would have stepped in and banned the sale to individuals but no they get their cut so why should they, grrrr!

Hi wolfie!
That makes me nostalgic hearing about Guy Fawkes! I think of bonfires with jacket potatoes too - do they still do them too?
We get too many fireworks here in Italy Even Halloween was an excuse but New Year is the worst. What I can't understand is when they start letting them off BEFORE dark
It does seem a stupid, senseless waste of money and when I had my cats I feared for them, especially when I was away at work and had toleave them alone.
Worse still here is that we get imported, illegal fireworks every year and they do damage even to the people using them and that is even sadder than the waste of money

Hello my friend, that is why fireworks should only be sold to organized displays with permits and not to individuals. I am not a total kiljoy it's just worrying when they get into the wrong hands and when black market ones are being sold it doesn't bare thinking about and it has been known that kids can easily buy them and that is scary!

I agree that only organised displays should be held and that was all my son saw when he was a child.
We also get kids picking unexploded ones up the day after and you can guess what happens then

Yes, I know where you are coming from.
We celebrated Halloween last night and a lot of people had fireworks going off in their gardens. You need a license here for them, which is around £60 but no one really gets one. They are very noisey and the poor dogs in my area where barking like mad, I am sure they have damaged eardrums today. They are nice to watch at the big displays, but all the small ones we can buy, should be totally banned. Kids are getting hurt to often, and old people must be taking ill. You are certainly right in saying it is like World war three going on with that deafening sound. Ban them all I say. But of course the Goverment would loose out as you say.

I so love the fireworks and always looks forward to watching them whenever I could. Here in my country, some individuals such as my cousin, loves to entertain us with firework displays during special occasions. We usually have them during Christmas and until January wherein we also have our mardi gras.

We have had them going off around here for what seems like weeks already, I hate them. I am absolutely petrified of them and I think I have only ever bought them a couple of times purely for the children, and both times me and the kids ended up in the house and my hubby was outside on his own letting them off because none of us liked them! I can think of lots of better things to spend my money on instead.
I do not have animals now, but when I did the poor things were always petrified and it is such a scary time of the year for them because there are some pure evil people in this world. Yes it is all about money, everything around these times revolve around money and I now spend as little of my money as I can at these times, I want money in my pocket not going up in puffs of smoke in the garden!

I don't mind them, if they are properly displayed and used. I would think it depends on the population when that gets out of control. In areas where there are suburbs etc that they should be banned at home and people should be giving a public place to celebrate out in a very open and not too dry area away from population to ejoy them. If you are in area where you already know the rules of the Forrest..and how bad it is for critters in the woods...well you may have to go to the city to enjoy them..cause your neighbors most likely will let you know how much you disturbed them..in ways that will keep you from ever doing such a dumb thing in the first place.
That idea that celebrations have to be done with intoxicating things is such a over rated thing as well. And i hope eventually there will be laws that prevent public displays of intoxication in any form. LOUD MUSIC ETC.. Thank you for bringing this discussion up.

Hi wolfie. I love fireworks, but just sometimes. When the new year coming and we can watch beautiful fireworks. It's festive.
I remember when I was a little kid and the country was not rich then, we kids liked to pick up the leftovers of the fireworks that had been off on the first day of the new year, wearing our new clothes. I think that is the memories that I cherish all about fireworks.
These days, I can't stand the noise and I think people are just too rich and they want to show the world that they are exact buring their money. The noise, smoke, all bad for human beings, animal and the environment as well.
As the line goes, watching the firework imitating falling starlight. No, they can never be the starlight. I can't figure out why people think the fireworks are romantic, because it's just a blink and then disppears?

Hey there Victor Meldrew!! LOL
Just kidding. I totally get what you are saying. We had fireworks in our garden last year but it was only on the 5th of November, not before and certainly not after. I wouldn't do them any other day of the year!! We aren't doing it this year as like you say it is all money and last year someone else bought them, I would have had them otherwise. I would take my boys to a proper firework display but they are so expensive to go to and they then charge the earth for hot dogs and beefburgers. My son told me tonight that he saw lots of fireworks but he hates them, he also doesn't like the noise they make.

I tend to agree with you up to a point. While I am not in the US, we do have the occasions where fireworks displays are organized. There does however seem to be a rogue element in society that seems to enjoy setting off noisy fireworks at all hours of the night. It has not been that bad yet but I am sure it against out city bylaws if I were to persue it. There is always something you have to give up when living in a city and one of those seem to be peace and quite what with the loud mufflers and stereos, and like you experience the occasional fireworks.
