Don't get me wong I am far from prejudice thats why i dont understnad why Obama's color keeps coming up. Yes he is the first BLACK president. I got that part. BUT He is also a person just like the rest of us. I dont see color, I see people. I get to know the person then, I decide if they are beautiful or ugly on the INSIDE!!! I see Obama as a beautiful person so far. BUT we only see his political side. We dont get to see the true man. I am glad he was voted for president, but I will not be looking at his color only his actions. How about you? Do you look at the outside person or the inside person??

People mention it for one of two reasons I think. 1) it's historic or 2) there's some prejudice there. It's important because we're healing wounds and proving that we can all get along. But that said, we shouldn't be voting for him because he's black, or against him either, but based on the issues. Hopefully that's what happened here.

A lot of us are guilty of labelling and we do this without even batting an eyelid my princess, there is good and bad in every race, in every country, in every community, in every culture, you get my drift, we cannot blanket everyone because of their difference. Honesty, integrity, trustworthy, loyalty and respect are the main attributes to making a person good or not! Anything else to me is irrelevant, I don't care if someone is sky blue pink, martian or comes from the planet zog, if he or indeed she does a good job then it don't matter one iota!

The first attraction is always how a person looks, this does not mean that Obama is not a good looking man, its just that whiter skin tends to attract more attention, but you just cant judge a person by what his color is, what matters is how he is from inside, is he helpful, responsible and a good human being, this is what matters.

Well said Wolfie!!! I was about to say the same thing. I think it is cool that there is a president other than the normal white guy, but I truly hope he can deliver everything he has promised. I was a bit alarmed after talking to over 20 adults last night who claimed that the main reason they voted for him was because of his skin color. How twisted is that? It is like reverse discrimination. What about his character? His experience? His motives? I wonder if the public and the media would be making this big of a deal if he was Asian, Native American, or some other race.

I'm neither black nor white (lol)so I am not, in a sense, really affected by the issues involved. However, as a citizen of the world, I believe that America has matured a lot politically. If ever there are remnants of the old thinking of racial prejudice, they belong to the endangered species and I wouldn't worry too much, it's perhaps a part in the process of political evolution. I honestly can't understand how the color of the skin can affect the person's gift and ability to govern. Did he win because for want of a better choice, I don't think so, and even if he did, it is indicative of the fact that America, by and large, looks deeper than just the skin's color.

I happen to agree Democrats are too liberal for my tastes. Bush did such an awful job these past 4 years that Americans would have rather elected Charles Manson in to office rather than another Republican.

I think it is totally wrong to judge a person by the color of their skin.It is what the person actually is. Now we, especially those of us who are not Americans cannot judge Mr.Obama simply because we do not really know him.No one can really know another person when we have been aquainted with that person for as little a time as we have been aquainted with Mr. Obama. To me he is a total newcomer and I think that he is very lucky. To tell you the truth as a non U.S. citizen I really did not expect Mr.Obama to become the President of the United States Of America.God says in the Bible "Judge not lest ye be judged". The people judging Mr. Obama by his color are totally wrong, epecially when they say that he is the first "Black President of America".Looking properly at his complexion I would say that Mr.Osama is the first Yellow President of America.

In the democratic primaries, there was a choice at either nominating the first woman or the first non-caucasian into the White House. The democrats nominated the first non-caucasian. To many it looked like manipulation by the democratic national committee, because they decided to find some lame excuse to count two states' votes as only half votes. Between the various democrats, there was some bickering in that you supported Hillary, you were racist, & if you supported Obama, you were against women.
The election, as evident from deleted posts & discussions here on MyLot, among other things, was pretty brutal with McCain supporters crying various things about Obama supporters, & vice versa. The various news also mentioned that quite a lot of younger people who were voting for the first time voted for Obama, but with what are supposed to be secret ballots, I do not know how they got that information.
In answering the question as the discussion title says, I think the big deal is because he is the first, & years later, the schools can add to their list of "who was the first Presidents that ... " It'll also probably be another question that they can add to various Trivia Pursuit games.
I wonder what the election would have been like if Colin Powell was the actual Republican nominee, &/or someone known as mssnow was either one of the nominees or chosen as a running mate ...

i prefer to look at the people from inside... and not from outside... i don't really care what skin color a person has... as long as he is a good person inside, there is no reason why we should be prejudice or racist against the person... i'm glad that obama wins the elections... it is a whole new era for america to have a an african american man be a president... take care and have a nice day...

it don,t matter to me what color he is i just like the things he discussed that he will try to do for the people.the fact is because he ia half black and half white it just made history for the black people he was in control of his of his campaign he never lost control like palin did toward the end of mcclain campaign she really just let go and slanging alsort of mudd this was not necessary if she had kept her kool mcclain could have indeed won.my answer to your question i always look at the heart and iam a pretty good judge of character of a person.

I think the statement the first BLACK president in the White House is again and again mentioned because it is history that was made. It would be the same if Hilary had won. It is not because she is a lady but the fact is that she would be the FIRST lady president. I think mentioning that Obama is Black is a way of telling the world that equality is there in america. Yeah it makes him no different but the fact is even though we tell people there is no racial discrimination, still some part there is still one. And besides saying the first Black President is not in any way degrading but instead a message that it is not in the color but because of what he is that he won. As his speech go there is no black, no white, no republican, no democrats, just the united states of america. :)

I posted few days ago discussions about racism. Almost every myLotters wrote there there is still a lot of racism in the world. So I think this is the main reason why Obama's color is so important and so big deal for many many people. Also some kind of tradition of only white presidents was broken and many people did not expect that. I do not understand this either like you. I think he was better candidate I do not care if he would be even green this is not important. We will see his steps and according to them we can judge him. But we have to give him some time to prove to people his qualities.

In your country race permeates everything. It is indeed a first that Obama is the first black president and as such it is a big milestone. Maybe in a hundred years after a few black presidents it will not seem like such a big deal. They would also make a full if a woman became president, although many other countries have had women and even black leaders.

I always love how these posts start with "but I'm not a racist!"
People are making a big deal out of it because it's not the norm. He was elected and yes, he's black. For the past 200+ years since the founding fathers drew up the constitution, everyone has been white. Now that it's finally changed, there are going to be feathers that get ruffled and people are not going to be happy. Maybe Obamanation will be the one we need to help, but I fully believe that he's going to far more damage than good during his 4 years. But we'll see.

the color is not the prejudice.we should treat it equally....... good to know the man.he is gracious in defeat.you are right, who can have the ability to make the country improved and let the people live happy life, and he is a good president. whoever he is ,and his background ,his skin color,he will dothis ,he will be in our mind .obama can do it well, and mccain should appriciate hisfriend.so it is good to know he is the man.
