How Reliable Is Your Postal Service?

I was just responding to another discussion and in answering realised that in the last couple of months I know for a fact that two parcels that have been sent to me haven't been received which I am quite upset about. What about the ones I don't know about being sent, it makes me wonder just how many do never arrive at their destination. I do receive post each day, usually bills, which I nickname hate mail LOL. How often do you receive mail. Does a lot of yours get lost? Ellie :D

I have actually recieved my mail open, even packages torn.I have made sure to tell people who I know are sending something to do it either through UPS or make sure to include a tracking number or something. It seems when I am to recieve packages and they aren't tracked they are either abused or I do not get them at all.

Hi Celestos, I have recived packages opened also. I do not trust the post much these days I must admit as even special delivery and recorded delivery quite often don't make it and you can never replace the items in them either even if they do compensate. I think this year rather than send Christmas parcels I may wait until I can visit the person or they me. Huggles. Ellie :D

Oh, no...don't get me started on OOPS (that's how _I_ pronounce UPS). As many times as they've left my packages with total strangers, or in places I wouldn't see it for weeks?
Nuh-ungh. What OOPS AND the P.O. BOTH need is SERIOUS competition from a PRIVATE company who knows they HAVE to do better, or =lose their shirts!=
'Course, with the government leaning more & more into the all-powerful State, that's less likely than EVER to happen.
And yes, I KNOW UPS is private--but where's THEIR competition??

Oh Fathers!!! Pls dont talk about the postal service. It is just crap.I think all government owned enterprises are nothing but frauds.Last week I sent my sisters certificates to her by express post which is supposed to reach her that very day.But she still has not got it.When I went there to complain, the person there tells me to wait for fifteen days and if it still does not reach then file a complaint. Then what is the purpose of the extra cash for the express delivery??? Im on pins because its her certificates. If it is lost, everything is lost.

Hi Andrew, This must be very frustrating and worrying as you took the precautions to ensure swift signed for delivery. I realy hope they do turn up. I had another government department send back things I had sent to them recorded delivery changing my address which they sent back to my old address even though the information was informing them of the new one and I lost my birth certificate. I was the one though that had to pay for a copy, crazy isn't it. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hello,Ellie! Here in India the postal service is the worst service ever provided to people.Few years back I received my bank draft, sent from my head office, after four months and letter I received frm my nephew after about two months from date of its posting. This is how our postal services are prompt.thanx.

Hi Bbsr, Four months, that is a ridiculous amount of time. Our first class service here is supposed to be next working day but it is usual for it to take two or three if it does arrive but it does sound like a better service than the one you have in India. I am quite upset about the two I haven't received though and it does make me wonder how many more I don't get. Huggles. Ellie :D

I am furious about the fact that you've not received that parcel yet Ellie. I have asked the PO to look into the matter but I'm not holding out any hope. Generally I think that the post is pretty good, at least here. That's part of the reason why I am so cross. Our mail comes every day at about 10 am - it used to come at 8 and again at 2 but "modernisation" and "increased effectiveness" has seen that service reduced to once per day and apparently we should count ourselves lucky to have that!

Hi P1kef1sh, No I still haven't received and I never recieved a book either that I ordered and it was a one off, the company only had that copy but they have been great and credited me but I am upset over this one too and it does make me wonder how many are sent that we don't receive. I get my mail quite late most days if at all. Huggles. Ellie :D

Eversince there are approximately 2 or 3 mails that I haven't received which was confirmed from the other end that it was sent yet it never arrived. And you are right, it made me realized about those who was sent to us unknowingly or we don't have any idea. Somehow the count maybe far higher than what I expect. And speaking of the bills, it's just stacked right there in the office, undelivered for months.

Hi Sirrob, It is worrying to think that if we are asware of the ones that don't arrive the numbers could be a lot higher as there as many we don't know that have been sent. The post also arrives at crazy times, years ago it used to arrive before we went out the door now it can be late afternoon or not at all. Huggles. Ellie :D

That's right. And oohh, before i forget, lucky for you that it arrives on the same day. I remembered one Christmas card that was sent by my aunt sometime in November then I went on vacation late December and the card came third week of January days after I arrived from my vacation. Sounds great job, right?Sometimes it is just so amazing.

I know the one _I_ have to use is awful. In fact, I've never had a LOT of luck with the Pest Awful...uh, s'cuse me, Post Offal, dagnabbit--I mean POST ORIFICE!!!
Put it this way. The U.S. Snail sez they"only" lose about 2% of their mail, yearly.
Stop & think, how many MILLIONS of pieces that IS! "Only?!"
And most of 'em seem to be MINE.
Okay, joking, but seriously, I'm often forced to call utilities companies & so one to see if they've sent me a bill, lest I wind up not GETTING it, & then forget that, thus ending up having to pay a LATE fee!
It's often asked why P.O. employees "go postal." I think they should be asking why the P.O.'s CUSTOMERS =don't!=

Hi Maggiepie, I would like to say a big thank you to you for all your input into this discussion on other peoples responses and the story about the picture being sent to London was really interesting. Reading through it does seem that you have had more than your fair share of situations regarding the mail system. The one that I am shocked abou is the person trusted with a PO box opening and having the cheek for her son to been seen playing with the stolen items from the package. The cheek of some people. Well, most of the posts HERE DO seem to suggest I have it worse than others. Maybe if I believed in karma, it'd all make sense! LOL!
The "England" trip was actually one of the best memories I have, so maybe, in a way, I should THANK the P.O.?
...
Nahhh! LOL!
As for my cousin's stolen Christmas presents, most of them were eventually retrieved. I think my aunt went (verbally) postal on the woman who ran the tiny office! LOL!
Thanks so much for the Best Response! (Second one today!!)

I rely on the postal service to get and mail out all my packages and then pray that it get where it is supposed to. I sent out a package 2 weeks ago to my cousin whom lives in the same state about an hour and a half away from me(neither of us own cars)and she still hasn't received it yet. I am very disappointed because what was in the package cannot be replaced. I will from now on start getting the insurance and also a tracking number. It would be worth the extra cost to know it was received.

They are alright I guess. I hardly use Postal services nowadays. But, they do deliver.. sometimes late. And once is a while, they do lose a letter, but you can't prove it because they always blame the sender.

Yes, that's true, & it's irritating as #ell. The one that kills ME is when they try to tell me my letter was "...probably too hard for their machines or clerks to make out the address -- people have such bad penmanship you know..."
BALONEY. My letters & addresses are METICULOUSLY prepared, carefully checked for any typos, & exceedingly well addressed in terms of clarity of penmanship, & anyway, MOST often I use mailing labels! There is NO excuse for their losing mine! I know OTHERS may be sloppy, but to haul that out as an excuse when I KNOW I did MY job properly just makes me do a swift sizzle. Grrr.
Nearly ANY OTHER business would not try to blame the CUSTOMER FIRST! I think their ARROGANCE, as much as anything else, is the basis of my dislike of their practices.

The postal service here is very friendly and efficient. I usually don't deal with parcels, but I do send and receive letters in the post, and I've not lost a single one yet in as many years as I can remember. There are many post boxes around for people to post their letters, and the postal agency comes around everyday at certain prescribed hours to collect the mails for sorting and delivery. Here the postal service is so reliable that if I post a letter to anyone locally, it will be delivered by the next working day. In practice, it works because I usually send out letters and payments one day before due date and the recipients usually receive them on time.

Hi Lexus, Thank you for sharing. I think it is fantastic that you do inded have such a reliable service. I have discovered since posting this that the parcel intended for me has arrived back at the original senders address so it is not lost afterall but saying that rather than post we are meeting up in a couple of weeks time so they will give to me personally then to make sure I doin fact receive it. Oh, man...
Good question, ellie. In the Philippines, the answer is "not so much".
If you're sending anything more than pencil/pen on paper, don't get it through the post offices here.
I once sent a letter to my previous girlfriend, and I included a keychain in it. It never reached her.
It was HERE. IN THE SAME CITY! Hah!

When I was in college, I thought about working there part-time because I thought that it was something noble. Now, if I ever think about working there again, it would be 'cos I want things done right.

Hi Lorgen, It is sad that you can only rely on just a letter getting through. In the UK the service is pretty good on the whole but believe it is individuals within the system that are dishonest and open parcels to see if there is anything intersting and of value they can take, which is wrong. One of missing parcels did show up last week but at the senders address not mine but I have another that has arrived now and I rang the delivery office this morning and they said that there were no delays so it should have done by now. Thank you forsharing your postal system experiences. Huggles. Ellie :D

Yes, we get lots of hate-mail too, lol! The post round here doesn't seem too bad. I don't know of anything that we were supposed to get that hasn't arrived; but like you point out, you don't find out about those things (unless the sender asks you if you've got it and you haven't!) We've had a couple of things sent from overseas that have gone astray, or taken months to arrive when they should have taken weeks, but it's difficult to know who's a fault there. We also get post every day, but most of ours is either bills or a load of junk mail.

Yes, our junk mail also goes straight into the recycle bin. Maybe I should make a hole in the side of the black box and the postman can post it straight in there instead, lol!
I know that some people put a sign up saying "no junk-mail please", but this wouldn't work with the junk-mail that comes through the post office (rather than the leaflets delivered by distributors), as the postman wouldn't know or have time to differentiate.
I would also be annoyed if parcels hadn't got to me. Very frustrating! I hope that they get to you in the end; I've heard tales of some items taking a slow and rather inefficient route before getting to their destination. (If you get them, look at the postmarks to see where they've been!)

The speed and quality of the Aussie mail service differs from place to place. It works in a strange way - places which are reasonably close (as the crow flies) have the mail go through a capital city, which slows it up. We have a daughter in Darwin, and sometimes it's nearly a fortnight before we receive parcels and things from her, so now she registers them and they arrive much sooner, as well as having a tracking number just in case. Our hate mail (love it!) NEVER gets lost. More's the pity ...

Hi Guybrush, Strange isn't it that the hate mail never gets lost and there is always so much of it. Since posting this one of the missing parcels has arrived but back with the sender rather than with me but another has gone missing which the sender is tracking at present. It is treason to tamper with the Royal Mail but sacks have been discovered in the past in postmans houses, silly people, for what? Huggles. Ellie :D

That is unbelievable that she just received a caution and is still running the place. She should have been severely punished and stopped from handling peoples personal mail ever again. It is sad to think that people placed in this trustworthy positions aren't always. I am sure the majority are but with so much of my mail that I am expecting to arrive not arriving it does make me wonder if someone is opening parcels and cards at one of the stops enroute to me. I have even been down to my local sorting office and they have searched there for me bbut no joy. Huggles. Ellie :D

I remember when my daughter got married eight years ago, she sent us an invitation and I sent her a beautiful RSVP. I assumed she'd received it (she only lives about 20km from us), and was amazed when she told me (quite a while after the wedding) that I'd been the only one who hadn't sent an RSVP. Imagine our surprise (and horror) a year or so after that when her little local postmistress was arrested for having an entire shed full of undelivered mail out the back of her house ... she'd apparently been opening things which looked like cards, etc., hoping to find money! My daughter and I are assuming that's where my card ended up - treason indeed! Strangely, this woman was fined and given a caution - but is still working at her little one-woman post office!

Hi ya ellie333
I am never sure if it is the sender's fault I haven't received a parcel yet or darn old Royal Mail. I really hate it when I hear the letterbox goes and there on the mat is, like you call it, hate mail especially when I am waiting for something. My mail has gotten lost a few times. My grip is with my postman. He won't bring me my big packages, he leaves me a note to collect them at the post office. He doesn't even try to give them to me. He is suppose to come to my door with a package that won't fit in the box. Also if I have a letter that needs to be signed to recieve it he won't bring them to my door, even when I was in a wheel chair. He would just leave me a note telling me I had one and to pick it up at the post office.
I wouldn't mind if I had no medical problems and it wasn't so far to the post office. My post office for Hillsboro says I'm too far out to recieve my mailf rom them so it comes from another town that is almost 20 miles away. Odd since it's only 5 miles to the Hillsboro post office. My home address is Estill Springs instead of Hillsboro. Many places in Tennessee are the same way.
It's annoying that my mailman will not deliver to me the way he is suppose to. He's too lazy to get out of the car and come to my door.

Hi Moondancer, Yes it does appear to be the actual mailman you have rather than the service as the good news is that today one of the two parcels arrived back at its destination saying that I hadn't collected from Post Office but I had no slip through the door or anywhere else telling me too. Crazy. Thanks for sharing. I would complain about the postman to his boss and say that although no longer in wheelchair it is difficult for you to get 20 miles to collect post. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi Cinderella, Well this afternoon the mystery of one parcel was solved as the sender emailed me to say it had arrived back with them, but I do know from years ago when my mum worked for the post office that workers were always getting sacked as bags of mail used to be found at their homes rather than delivered etc. They never fail to deliver the bills though LOL. Except for federal holidays, our mail comes Monday through Saturday usually between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. if our regular postman delivers. If it's someone else, there's no telling when it will come, but that's because the substitute has to do his/her route first and then the other. Our regular postman is very reliable and very seldom makes a mistake.

Hi, Ellie! Where I live as far as I know my family never has any trouble with the mail and in fact our mail lady sometimes even goes out of her way to deliver it to us at the door rather than at our box so we don't even have to cross the street. This includes our packages that are too big for our box. On the other hand when I lived in downtown, Tampa, Florida, I still find it funny that it took 3 or more days later for something coming to me in the mail (even from Tampa itself than for something coming from Guam. That's out in the Pacific Ocean not in the neighborhood.)
