I think I had my first migraine headache this morning. Anyone else get these?

I'm not sure because I've never experienced anything like this in my life before! First of all, I went to bed last night with a headache... not a really bad one, just your average kind of headache. I thought it was a sinus headache. Anyway, I slept for 8 hours! That is SO not normal for me! When I woke up, I was soaking wet from head to toe. I changed into a light summer nightie, went to the bathroom because I really, REALLY had to go, then went back to bed. I was feeling nauseous... not constantly, it kind of came in waves. Anyway, I fell back to sleep for another FOUR HOURS!!! I woke up again and the sunlight felt like it was going to split my head wide open! Still nauseous, I went back to sleep for another couple of hours. When I woke up this time, I felt much better. Headache was gone, no nausea. I was actually HUNGRY and very thirsty! I feel very much back to normal now. So, do you get migraines? Have you ever had these weird symptoms? I know about sunlight and sound affecting migraine sufferers and the nausea that normally accompanies it, but this weird feeling like I was going to die and having no energy, sleeping so much... is that part of it? Yeah, yeah, I'm going to see my doctor but I can't see him until Monday. Do you have any weird symptoms like needing to sleep abnormally long or start having thoughts of your own death? Any other things I can "look forward to" if this WAS a migraine? Help!

i have migraines almost daily.. the really bad ones are hell and what happens to me is confusion.. extreme nausea.. light sensitive.. sound sensitive.. movement sensitive.. dizzy.. cant concentrate.. head feeling like its gonna split open or pounding or blinding pain.. vision problems.. spots or streaks.. you can feel feverish.. you can have incontinence.. sleep is the only thing that will help those.. the daily ones i get usually just make me miserable but i can some what still function but have to have headache meds.. excederine is GREAT for headaches.. its the only thing otc that works on me but you had to get it early.. if you can take it early enough at the first signs you can some times get rid of them.. chocolate and cafiene help sometimes.. and lack of them can cause them lol.. they put me on propropanolol daily which is a blood pressure med to help migraines but its not really helping anymore and well i dont have insurance so it will have to wait to get something better to take every day or something.. good luck!! oh and the migraine pain usually is on one side of your head or the other and can bounce back and forth from one side to another.. also can be behind your eyes and in the back of your head or on fore head

Hahaha! Sorry to laugh, but you reminded me of my thoughts during this. I was thinking that I couldn't die now because my house needed cleaning! LOL I feel so sorry for you! It must be more than awful to have these every day!!! You said you don't have insurance; do you qualify for Medical Assistance? If you haven't looked into it, you really should! If your income is low enough you can get help from the government. (My mother was a social worker for many years and she was always telling me to see if I qualified for this or that when I was raising my two sons by myself and struggling financially.) Maybe I'll never get another one of these headaches... I hope I don't! Excedrin is the only thing that works for me as far as headaches go, as well! I took one during this, but it was AFTER I had slept for 8 hours already, so it didn't really work. Hopefully, medical science will achieve a breakthrough in their research into migraines one day soon and you'll be migraine-free. I wish you the best!

we make too much for assistance and im waiting trying to get disability with all the crap i have going on but ive been waiting over 2 years.. its about a 3 year wait here if not longer.. the main thing with my migraines is i feel stupid all the time.. like im stoned and cant figure out what the heck is going on.. but what can you do?? cant stay in bed till they are gone because i always have them!! so some times i know i totally miss read things here or respond wrong because i cant think for crap with my head pounding.. i have been on the migraine meds you take only when you get them and i always felt like i was a heart attack.. it was awful so i take them.. i am trying to go off a few of my meds and seeing if maybe a medication im on now is causing them to be more often but my guess was wrong..

Once you had a migraine it's probably a start of something... It comes back from time to time. Based on my experience. My first migraine got me to the hospital. It hurt so much that it took a lot of pain relievers to ease it. I was confined for 1 day, and when I got out of the hospital my head feels numb. After that incident, I get minor headaches or a migraine from time to time. I hope that's not the case for you since it's very hard to deal with it. Please do take care of yourself my friend.

Thank you for your concern, selece! It means a lot to me. You are a very good friend. I'm hoping it was just an isolated incident. I knew they were bad but had never experienced it before. Now that I have, I can totally empathize with everyone else who gets them! For me, I think the confusion was the worst part... well, aside from the pain, of course. I've had headaches my whole life. I 'inherited' bad sinuses and have sinus headaches quite frequently but NEVER anything like this! I couldn't believe how unbearable the pain was! You'd think by now that there would be more that could be done to control migraines! I know they're still not completely understood and the only thing we can do is try to find a medicine that works for us and to lie down when we get them. I'm so sorry to hear that you get them occasionally! Now that I know what they're like, I feel bad for everyone who gets them! Well, I always felt bad for anyone in pain, but knowing exactly what they're like now and always putting myself in the other's place (empathy), I actually HURT for them (you). Maybe one day soon there will be an actual cure for migraines! We can only hope, huh? You take care of yourself, too! The world is a nicer place with you in it.

We can only hope, until then we have to do our best to avoid any instances that would trigger it. Such as oversleeping, lack of sleep, stress, and the like. Luckily I've been good at that recently so the frequency of headaches is minimized. I hope that can help you too. Thank you so much for the empathy, it is always nice to have people like you around.

I haven't been diagnosed as having migraine, I have some sort of headache often, it occurs in one place right over my eye. And it hurt real bad sometime. I take Excedrin Migraine for it and it goes away, I don't have those symptoms that you mentioned. Let me know what the doctors say when you go for your visit.

Sounds like you might either be having a sinus headache or something called a "concentrated migraine". I used to have them about 30 years ago! I'd get a really severe pain over my left temple and that's what my doctor called it... a concentrated migraine. But, I'm going to see my doctor today so we'll see! So far I haven't experienced anything that bad, although I have had a 'normal' headache since last night. THIS one I almost KNOW is a sinus headache. I've had them often my whole life. I'll keep you posted on what the doctor says!

I got it one time. I remember being at work, looking at some catalogues when everything before my eyes started moving with really bright lights...like seeing flashlights in my head, really bright, and colorfull. I couldnt see anything. My head didnt hurt just then yet, but they took me home and I lied down, since it already started to hurt by then, but after a while it started hurting so much. I have never experienced headache that bad. I moved a finger and it hurted like my head is being cut open. I couldnt keep my eyes opend, needed dark and quiet. I didnt know what it was, until I talked to my doctor and she told me it must have been a migraine. I start having flashes of light before my period, so when I do I know whats going to happen so I go and drink water imediatly and taking some pain killers and since then I manage to avoid it. It does hurt but not that bad as it did. My cousin has such bad migraines its affecting her life big time. She cant leave a room for days, cant stand any light for days, so she have to take days off work. And she has them often. She even got divorced because of that , as it affected her marriage and family life too much. But one positive thing when getting a migraine...I have never seen colours so beautiful as then lol even if they were only flashing in front of my eyes :) They say migraine is very often stress related, so it would be a good thing to learn some relaxation technique.

hi i also have migraine, i was confined three weeks back. mine was diagnosed as complicated migraine, i felt unbearable headache, vomiting, disorientation and numbness of the right arm and leg. the neurologist told me that complicated migraine happens when the blood in the portion of our head was not flowing properly. there are worst case of complicated migraine where in the patient suddenly got blind at the point of migraine attack but it will fade once the headache disappears. the doctor pointed out the causes of migraine. one is stress, eating to much of food with preservatives, chocolates and a lot more. what fears me is the feeling of disoriented. i cant recall things at the time of attack. you can also view my blog about my personal experience during my complicated migraine attack at www.roselynm1023.multiply.com several years back i had that kind of attack too similar to you. i hate seeing light and i want to sleep the entire day. well, what can i say is avoid being stressed. if you feel that the symptoms are coming in grab your migraine medicine. do not allow your headache to get worst. a prayer of healing and relaxation will help too.

Thank you, roselynm! I'm so sorry you go through this complicated migraine! That has to be the absolute worst kind of headache! I'm glad you have medication for it, though. I wasn't feeling stressed at all, though. I didn't eat anything unusual or do anything out of the ordinary. I have no idea what brought this on. It just came out of nowhere. I DID feel disoriented when I first woke up. I couldn't understand why I had slept so long. I NEVER do that! I didn't know what time of day it was or even WHAT day it was! That's when I just went back to sleep. I didn't think of anything else... just going back to sleep. My doctor will most likely prescribe migraine medicine for me to have on hand, just in case this happens again. I don't know what else he'll recommend but, whatever he does recommend I will do!

I feel so bad for you! My cousin gets migraines like that but she takes a prescription medication for them. Do you have that? If not, you should ask your doctor about it. My cousin says she takes a pill as soon as she knows a migraine is coming on and it's almost always gone within 20 minutes! Mine wasn't THAT bad, I'm so thankful to say! I had nausea, but didn't throw up. Just lying down and closing my eyes helped a lot. I closed the shades and it was quiet so I know that helped, too. Hopefully, it was just this one. I don't ever want to experience that again! I wish you much luck with yours. Talk to your doctor about them and try to get one of those migraine prescriptions! They really work!

I am just 26 years old and i am also having migraines for past 2 years . The headache is too bad. It gets worst with light or sound. The only thing that can relax me is sleep. You will much better if you get proper sleep. The reason i get migraines is if i get less rest or i eat less. I don't feel like i am dying. May be it happened to you for the first time and you a bit scared so you thought you are going to die. I got scared too when i was almost paralyzed because my blood pressure got too high. Nothing to worry about. Just consult your doctor and try to sleep at time.

Thank you, ghazal. It certainly was a scary experience! I couldn't understand what was happening to me! I've been through a lot of medical issues in my lifetime but never anything like this! At least now I feel a bit better after reading these responses. I haven't had a proper sleep in years! I have fibromyalgia, lupus and arthritis and usually wake up after a few hours from pain somewhere, usually my hip or knees. But, this has been going on for years and I've never had a headache like this one! My blood pressure is fine and I didn't eat anything out of the ordinary the day before, or eat less than usual. Well, normally I drink a certain amount of water each day and I didn't drink as much that day. I wonder if that could have something to do with it. I'll ask my doctor on Monday and do whatever he suggests. Thank you for your advice!

Thanks, ronaldinu. I felt better after 14 hours of sleep! Once I woke up for the third time, the headache and tired feeling were completely gone! I doubt it was the flu since this only lasted about 20 hours total. It might have been a virus, but from what I've been reading here and online, it sounds like it was a migraine. My doctor gave me a prescription for migraine medication so, if it ever happens again, I'll be prepared.

Yes, and I get hot tea and medicine right away. It can just be blinding and also last a very long time. I have had them last for 4 to 5 hours and tha was after taking meds. Drinking something hot with the meds will make them work faster.

I'll remember that about drinking something hot, ea! Thanks for sharing that tip! My cousin gets them often and they're quite bad, vomiting and everything! Luckily, the prescription she got from her doctor works very well. I don't know exactly what she takes, but she says it works as fast as 20 minutes! At least, that's when she takes the pill as soon as she feels a migraine coming on. My doctor will probably prescribe migraine medication for me to have on hand. I'll definitely keep them handy! Whatever he suggests, I'll do.

I'm sorry to hear that you get them, too, ann! It's reassuring to know that they are not that uncommon but, at the same time, I feel bad to know that so many others experience them! I can't pinpoint any specific cause because nothing out of the ordinary was happening right before this happened. My blood pressure is fine, I wasn't stressed and I didn't eat anything new or out of the ordinary. But, I've gotten some great advice here so I know what I should do if this ever happens again. I'll probably get a prescription medication from my doctor on Monday and take that if I feel this coming on again. I'll also lie down immediately in a dark, quiet room. I guess that's really all one can do, huh?

I suffered from both migraines and sinus headaches and they share a lot of similarities. With the migraine though, the pain is so intense that I can't fall asleep, (maybe you got lucky and were able to sleep through it). You do have some classic symptoms, including the nausea waves and what I call the "vampire effect" where sunlight feels like a dagger in your head. Your doc will probably prescribe some migraine meds in case you get another one. Hopefully they are few and far apart. I had them practically daily and it took about six months to find a pattern and the source of what triggered them. Sometimes its food allergies, too much caffeine, and other things you might not have thought of. I kept a diary of habits and what I ate so that the specialist was able to help me control them.

Hmmm... you've got me thinking about what I might have been doing that was different than usual. Honestly, I can't think of anything! My brain has always tried to shut down whenever anything bad was happening to me. Whenever I'm in any kind of bad pain, I fall asleep. I guess I'm fortunate in that area! I'm so glad to hear that you've got yours pretty much under control now! I've always felt so bad for anyone who's had a migraine, especially those who get them often! I have a cousin who gets them at least a few times each month but she has a very good prescrition medication that works very fast for her. Now, I know exactly what everyone goes through with a migraine! Man! I hope I never get another one but, if I do, I'll probably have a prescription from my doctor. He's great at prescribing meds!

I have only had a few migraines and not as severe as some here. I get the aura and the light sensitivity and of course the splitting headache, no nausea thank goodness. I found that once I recognize it coming on I lay down in a dark room and it passes in an hour or so. If I "soldier on" it just lasts for hours and is fatiguing. Some people have situations or foods that trigger migraines so you might have to avoid those. I suspect this will be a rare occurrence like me, but I certainly would seek medical advice to rule out stroke, high blood pressure, etc. If you get another migraine it will probably be more or less same as what you experienced.

Thanks, mariposaman. Your words are reassuring! I'll see what my doctor suggests on Monday. If he gives me a prescription for the migraines, I'll take one and lie down immediately when/if I feel another one coming on. I stayed up and watched some TV for an hour or so after this headache began because it wasn't as severe at first. But, I had to take my glasses off because they were hurting my head so badly! They don't usually do that! I also noticed the colors on the TV screen were brighter than usual and I really couldn't focus... it all seemed to be 'moving'. I guess that's what everyone is calling an "aura". If I had recognized this as the beginning of a migraine, I would have turned off the TV, closed my eyes and gone to sleep right away! I'll know next time!!!

Oh yes, I have had my share. I don't sleep as much. It is hard for me to sleep because I can't get comfortable. The shots are the best for them, but the doc said when you FIRST feel one coming on, take meds right away or it will take forever to get over. THAT IS NO LIE. Also when my estragen count was off high or low, they came hard and fast, and oh so often. When I first got pregnant, I have one for 30 days, no lie, and could have nothing for it. It put bad thoughts in my mind. Hope you never get there.

I just read that in WebMD about taking the medication as soon as you feel one coming on. My cousin said the same thing; she gets them all the time. I know that staring at a computer screen can cause eyestrain and that can be terribly painful! I've had headaches most of my life. Normally, they're just sinus headaches. I've had chronic sinusitis my whole life so I'm used to headaches... normal ones! This was horrible!!! My doctor might just say it was probably an isolated incident but may prescribe migraine medication just in case. He's a good one for prescribing meds! But, he's also the one who said it was okay for me to go off my blood pressure medication because I had lost 21 pounds and started eating even healthier than I had been and my blood pressure went down to normal, but to keep my meds handy, just in case it started going up again. I know this wasn't due to high blood pressure because I check it once a week or so now to make sure it's still in the healthy range. I HOPE it was just an isolated incident and I never have another one!

I have had an occasional migraine, but not in a long time. But I have a grandson who will soon be 15 that has had them for years. His used to be really close ones, causing him to miss lots of school. He would be fine, and then just come down with a pounding headache, nausea, sometimes, laying in the floor of his bathroom sleeping between throwing up. And he could not stand light at all. He wanted quiet and a very dark room. He was on medication. But, as he's gotten older, they are few and far between and less severe. He has learned when one might be coming on, and he quickly takes a X-strength Tylenol or his light medication he has and lays down, and it usually passes. This year he hasn't had but just a few that I know of. But I do know that he's come home from school, took medication, went to bed and slept all night and all day the next day without eating until it was gone maybe late in the day. Another thing, did you take anything for that 'sinus headache' that might have worked against you, making you sleep like you did?

No, actually I didn't take a thing for the headache! I just got in bed and watched some TV like I usually do. Oh, wait a sec... I may have taken an Excedrin, but that's all. Whenever I get a headache, I normally take one Excedrin... not two. If the headache is stubborn, I'll take another aspirin but not usually. So no, I didn't take anything except maybe that. I have a cousin who gets migraines pretty often and takes a prescription medication. Her's are as severe as your grandson's used to be! Maybe I slept so long because it was simply my brain trying to protect itself. I have no clue! All I do know is that it's not normal for me to sleep more than 4 hours at a time. I guess only time will tell, huh? I'll see what my doctor has to say but I doubt I'll get any more information than I already have. He might prescribe a migraine medication as a 'just in case' sort of thing. So far, so good... I haven't experienced anything close to that since it happened! I'm back to normal and just hope I stay that way! They ARE nasty, aren't they?!?

Hi mentalward! Yes, It does sound like it could have been a migrane. I get them quite often and they are really miserable and you do feel like you want to die! The pain is extremely horrible! Everyone has slightly different symptoms. Mine are severe headache, can't stand any noise or light sometimes nausea and very tired. When I get a migrane all I can do is try to sleep and pray that when I wake up it will be gone. The only thing that I ever took for it was Excederin PM's so that I could try to sleep. I would make the room dark and put in my earplugs and try to go to sleep no matter what time of day it was. The headace is the worst headache you can ever imagine. I haven't had one in awhile but I sure know when I'm getting one! With me they are usually brought on by stress. Since I haven't been working I don't get them much anymore! I would just go to the doctor and see what he says.

I'm so glad to hear you don't had many of them anymore! Man! This just totally flipped me out! I've had pain like this before, but not in my head. I was having a procedure done at the hospital once a LONG time ago. My fallopian tubes were blocked from a severe infection I had just gone through and they were trying to force them open with dye that they were using just to look at what was going on in there. Once they saw the blockage on the screen, they just pushed that dye in until I started screaming! It took 4 people to hold me down! That's the kind of pain I had with this headache only there wasn't a 'cause' that I could try to get away from! I wasn't stressed or anything just before this happened. I'm normally a very laid-back kind of person. If my doctor gives me a prescription for migraines, I'll keep it handy. I have a cousin who gets them and has this prescription and she swears by it! It gets rid of her migraines in about 20 minutes! I'll just have to wait until Monday and see what my doctor says. I'll do whatever he recommends! I feel so bad for people who get these often! Man!

I think it is migraine as you are suspecting.Migraine headache is so debilitating,in it's severe form that it can make you disabled for even 72 hours. An attack of migraine is usually preceded by an 'AURA' during which the person feels nauseated, lights are felt brighter.migraine needs prompt treatment as the headache is quite debilitating.consult your doctor very soon and you need to take medications to prevent another attack.

Thanks so much for this information! I made an appointment to see my doctor on Monday about this. I'll do whatever he says! I don't want this to happen again if I can help it! They really are horrible! I guess last night I had a little signal but didn't know what it was. I was watching TV and had to take my glasses off because it felt like they were gaining weight! They felt like they weighed about 20 pounds! The TV DID seem a bit brighter than normal. I'm also very glad that this didn't last anywhere near 72 hours!!! It was only about 20 hours, total. I had no idea they could last that long! Man! Well, I'll see my doctor on Monday... promise! And, again, thanks for this information!
