Ifound this article which stresses the importance of having an eight hours of sleep daily. Here is the link http://www.timesofmalta.com/life/health-and-fitness/view/20081111/medical-updates/short-sleep-tied-to-heart-disease-risk
People with high blood pressure who get less than the standard amount of sleep may face an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, researchers reported yesterday.
In a study of more than 1,200 Japanese adults with high blood pressure, the investigators found that those who slept for less than 7.5 hours each night were more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke or die of cardiac arrest over a four-year period.
At particular risk were “short sleepers” who failed to have a blood-pressure dip that normally occurs overnight.

I remember reading this somewhere, and it's quite alarming because I've never managed eight hours of sleep in my life! I'm lucky to get four or five - that would be the maximum, and even that is broken up into smaller amounts as I wake often during the night. I never feel tired though, or worried about it - so it's worrying to hear the lack of sleep could cause those problems.

Oh, that's just great! I rarely sleep more than 6 hours per night and I have trouble achieving that much without getting up one or two times. Well, at least I won't live long enough to become a burden to my children.

Yeah, in fact sleep, can link to alot of other life threatenign diseases, such as obesity too ^_^ As what researches have shown and proven, sleep is actually very important to one's health, because the body will do self repairs when we are sleeping.. ANd when one dun get enough sleep, the repairs cant be done, and in the long term, we are gonna be affected and suffer for it..
Thus, for those whom dun sleep enough everyday, this is very important for one to know and take note too ^_^

A lack of sleep can lead to many more health problems as well. It can lead to obesity, sleep apnea, Diabetes, heart disease, etc. Not getting enough sleep causes tremendous stress on the body. Your body repairs itself during sleep. It is a known fact that when you do not get enough sleep your body releases cortisol hormone. Cortisol makes your body store fat, increases cravings, and leads to overeating. The fat is stored mainly in the abdomen, hips, and thighs. A lot of people do not get the recommended amount of sleep. I have to get at least 7 hours of sleep I seem to keep my weight down that way.

I know how bad lack of sleep can be for the body. I had a severe case of insomnia a few years ago that I thought was going to kill me. I was so sick all the time and I felt like I was going crazy.. well some people still think I'm crazy!
The body definitely needs proper sleep and it doesn't take long for the effects to catch up with you if you don't get it.

Sleep has always been important. I am not surprised that a link has been found between lack of sleep and heart stroke. What did surprise me was the amount of sleep that was actually needed. I guess sleep is far more important than anyone thought.

This is a useful one! I'm encouraged to really try getting 8 hours of sleep each night. The shortest sleep I had is 6 hours but normally it is 7 to 8 hours. But now, I promise myself to get as much as 8 if only to avoid the risk.

I totally agree with that. The body ONLY heals when you have an efficient sleep so the healing process cannot happen to reinforce the body and slow down aging, if we do not have enough of it.

Hi friend,Its true that we need 8 hours of sleep for healthy living and active mind.People affected by high blood pressure take tablets everyday and their blood pressure is normal, but when they dont get enough sleep for days together and even if they take tablets for blood pressure it shoots up for sure. Then the doctor advices to have good sleep and even recommends sleeping tablets for two or three days and checks the blood pressure again and to our surprise the blood pressure comes to normal. So 8 hours sleep is a must for every humanbeing for a healthy living..thanks for sharing your informative post.happy mylotting.

Thank you. I read the article. I only get around six or seven hours sleep at the moment and now I am worried. My blood pressure has been high this year three times. Maybe if I sleep a little more this might help me.
I do have a lung disease and was putting it down to that, but I think that article could be spot on.

Well I'm glad that I get enough sleep, I get about 8 hrs of sleep a night, but I usually wake up at least once during the night, but I always go right back to sleep. I know we all need to get enough rest for our health, sometimes its hard for some people.

Hi ronaldinu,
Well its an eye opener, pardon my pun, I really should have my eith hours but I don't , I have about 5 hours sleep per day, but I haven't got high blood pressure though, my husband has 12 hours sleep because when he gets up, he normally do the usual things but alsways sleep in the afternoon for a few hours, then when he gets up, he eats stay up for a little while watching tv and then go off to bed again, he loves his sleep, but I just cannot sleep as much as him.

Every one needs enough sleep but the problem is we really can not. Makes me wonder though that most older people I know feels okay despite sleeping for only a few hours each night. They say it is normal for them.
