Do you try to reduce fat in your meals?

With today's empasis on healty meals, I watch how much fat I use and I try to search for alternatives for butter. I use more olive oil and when I bake I use sillicon bakemoulds to make sure I don't have to use a lot of butter. Do you also try to reduce fat in your meals? Why? And how do you do this?

no i never try to reduce my fat intake. i eat quite low fat food, i dont do this on purpose it just the food i like tends to be low fat. because of this i have the oppotuinity to use butter instead of a low fat substitute. i really like butter so i would never choose a substitute anyway. happy mylotting

Good that you like food thats low fat, and yes you can or maybe must use butter then to make sure you get enough fat. Because not enough fat is also not healty. What kind of food do you eat then? I'm very curious! Thanks for the response

i am into green beans at the moment. i also like to eat a lot of cauliflower and brocoli. mackeral is another favourite of mine as are oranges. becuase i work a lot of the time it is easier to have little bits of food rather than preparing a big meal with food from all of the food groups. happy mylotting

I try sometimes, but it cuts the flavor out of them, I use a Foreman Grill and the food tastes absolutely good. I do this because I don't want high cholesterol since it is a factor in North America.

We hear a lot about high cholesterol here too. That's one off the reasons I'm trying to reduce the fat I use to cook. A grill is a good idea. Is a Foreman Grill a special one? Or is it a normal grill? We sometimes use the grill, but not a lot. Could use it more. It also tastes good when you put some vegetables on the grill, like capsicum and onion. Thanks for the response!

I know I should reduce the amount of fat in my cooking. It is a healthy step and useful to reduce the cholesterol intake into our body. I try to minimize as much as I can, but I can't do it while frying eggs. My husband really likes fried eggs and he likes it to be fried with enough oil so that it will appear nicer in shape and taste. In my other cookings, I still use palm oil but I try to reduce it. For example when frying fish, I only put a little oil and I use the non stick pan so that little oil usage won't give any problems to me. While making pancakes I also use the non stick pan so I don't have to use any oil at all. The same goes with frankfurters, I don't use oil but I use the non stick pan to make my job easy.

I also use a non stick pan to reduce the fat. But I also noticed that with some things it's hard to use just a little bit of fat. When I bake an egg it only tastes good when I use more butter then normal. But for the rest I use less butter and mostly olive oil. I'll try to make my pancakes without any oil too. I was a little bit reluctant to try, because I thought they needed some oil, but if it works for you, I'll try it too. Thanks for the response

I always try to eat healthy food as much as I can, and it has already become a habit. I'll try to put as little oil as I can, put as little salt or seasonings as I can. Also, I always eat vegetables and seldom eat meat, even if I eat meat, I won't go for those fat ones. Actually it's not to reduce fat, but to eat healthier. Perhaps margarine is healthier than butter?

That's a good idea to use margarine. Thanks for the hint! Are seasonings also bad for your health? I use a lot of herbs when I'm cooking to season the food. It's good that it has become a habit to eat healthy. That's what I want for me too. That it's normal to eat healthy and exercise a lot. I'm raised eating healthy and exercising, but since I live together with my boyfriend I've taken over a lot of eating habits that are not healthy. Thanks for the response

Ya....my body is becoming in round shape...... means that my belly grows bigger and bigger........ I thought what was the reason..... I am working in computer.... and I am not exercising at all..... and finally, I am adding butter to the food I am having.............. And, two weeks before, I stopped using the butter and I am walking about 5 minutes in the morning..... and I am not using the lift in the office.....

And your belly doesn't grow anymore? Or are you getting slimmer? Sometimes you just need to see what a change is doing to you and then you'll be able to keep it that way. Because adding butter to the food is also a habit. For me it was a habit and I didn't really knew I could let it out. Thanks for the response

If possible, I use olive oil instead of butter. Other than that, I mostly focus on reducing the salt.

We have always made an effort to eat relatively healthfully, but about 3.5 years ago, my husband (BF at the time) was diagnosed with extremely high cholesterol and triglycerides. What I didn't know is, at the time, he ate a slice or two of greasy pizza for lunch 3-5 times/week! Once the Dr. spoke with him, he changed his lunch habits, and now (that we're married), he generally takes a sack lunch. Anyway...the ways we pay attention to our eating habits include: using olive and canola oils only; sauteeing in a combination of olive oil/water - I start, say, onions in olive oil to get the flavor into them, and then add a little water or sometimes combo of water/olive oil to continue cooking them; lower-fat versions of some products; fat-free on some things for hubby; eating more whole grains, fruits,veggies and legumes and less meats, cheeses, and sweets; baking 90%+ of baked goods (bread, muffins, sweets) at home, using whole grains and reducing sugars and fat; cooking from scratch rather than using processed boxed products; and using butter, not margarine. Yes - we use butter. Not for sauteeing (usually), but for spreading or in baked goods, yes. Most margarine has trans fats which are the absolute worst for our bodies - because they are synthetic, our bodies don't recognize them and thus don't know how to process them. I"d rather use butter in moderation than margarine indiscriminately for taste reasons as much as health - but, as with anything moderation is key! We use no, or very little butter on , say, vegetables - perhaps enough to 'glaze' and help any herbs or seasonings stick. I second previous comments about getting familiar with a variety of herbs and spices - really, they add more flavor anyway, IMO! Also, one can cut down gradually with something like butter on vegetables - as you said, every little bit helps. We don't add salt in cooking or have a salt shaker at the table. Also, I don't mind some reduced-fat things - though I read labels on commercial items very carefully to see what the fats are being replaced with - but generally, I find fat-free versions of items meant to have some fat unpalatable. E.g., I'd rather have 'real' cheese once or twice a week (or month) than some fat-free processed stuff every day! Besides - while you may be saving some fat, there is often a health trade-off with the addition of extra sugars, chemicals, etc. which may be just as bad for us, especially consumed over the long term. We try to stick with making the bulk of our eating from foods that 'naturally' have relatively low fat levels, rather than using chemical-laden low-fat substitutes for high-fat foods...and enjoy the *occassional* cheese, cream in the coffee, croissant, or whatever in moderation. I do try to make thing with either lite or reduced fat products. I guess it must be healthier for us. I use pam in the frying pans instead of a chunk of butter. I use I Cant Beleive It Isn't Butter spray for popcorn and muffins instead of melting butter.

No not really. WE dont cut fats on our meals. I try to do it somethimes though but most of the times we dont care what to eat.

Since ny husband had a heart attack in April & had to have 5 bypassesI have changed my way of cooking & yes trying to take out most of the fat,,also trying to get him to eat more fish
