The Iraq War Has Ended?

Apparently as of yesterday we're moving out of Iraq. Wonder why it hasn't been very publicised, I would have thought it would be all over the news

Lol, wasn't that the fake New York Times headline that has been circulating? That was done by activists to pressure Obama into keeping his promise to pull out the troops. I think they put a date of sometime July 2009 in there for the last US soldier to leave Iraq. In reality there has already been a troop reduction and apparently some troops are going home early (before Christmas), which would mean that others would probably have to rotate in earlier. Also, our government has submitted a final draft to the Iraqis for an agreement that would allow the US troops to remain three years longer after the UN deadline expires on December 31st. This agreement passed the first approval hurdle in Iraq and is supposed to be considered in an emergency cabinet meeting there on Monday or Tuesday. If they pass it, it goes on to their parliament for passage. Looks like it will ultimately pass. Obama would likely not be bound to keep troops there. But during his campaign he had already acknowledged it would take at least 14 months to get our troops out of there. Who knows what we will end up doing. However, as of now a complete pull-out has not been ordered;)

Lol yeh, appologies for my stupidity. I don't understand why we want to stay any longer than we need to. The Iraqi Government and people are of the oppinion that we are no longer needed. Our original intention was only to stay as long as the new Government of Iraq required us. If they want us gone, why are we stalling.

Not all in the Iraqi government want us gone. But even if all of them would, we'd rather stay. Do you really have to ask why? What does the country have we don't have? What does having bases in that country and in that region mean to us from a military standpoint? And from a political standpoint? Maybe that'll all change under Obama politics...

There really hasn't been much of a war for about a year now. Our troops have been pulling out of areas of Iraq over the past several months that it is no longer necessary for us to be in. Fox News did report on it somewhat however it was over shadowed a great deal by the election. There is still work to be done but we are finally on the right track... at least that is what the commanders I know of say. My husband's friends who have been there recently say it's a complete turn around since even a year ago in Iraq and believe that 2010 the latest, a pull out date that has been estimated, is very much in site. Iraqi's are finally willing to fight for themselves. But no declaration of it being over yet and Obama won't have anything to do with us getting out any earlier than we would have if it had been without him.

this is the first I've heard of it. Where have you heard it? I'll have to do some research on line. Maybe they don't want it too publicized because they're still working on it, who knows? I have no idea, but if this is true, it's a good thing to know. Thanks for the tip.

I heard on the news that after the election Bush decided to move several troops out of Iraq, obviously not all of them, that just would be a poor logistic move. I don't think that all of the troops will be moving out any time soon, but I do think that once Obama gets into office the troops that are there will remain on the defensive.
