Have you ever made Penpal Friends?

When I went to school we were encouraged to improve our penmanship and one of the ways we were encouaged is we were given address from real people from far away countries. I was one of the ones that did write letters. I wrote hundreds of letters and got nearly as many sent back to me. To this day I remember the name of one girl from Mexico. I never met her but I enjoyed her letters because she sent me many photos of her culture and I sent her photos also. Computers have taken away the need to write letters but I'd still write the odd letter on my good days if I had someone to write to. Have you ever been a Penpal?

I had a penpal in England and I also had a cousin Eunice that I wrote quite a bit to. But my letters were very boring, relating the weather and all that stuff. And my handwriting never was that good. That was back when I was in grade school. I do not know where Eunice is now, but I bet she is here on mylotting writing under an alias.

You're welcome. Her husband is into computers, so it is a good chance that she is here.

Yes I have been a penpal. When I was about 13 years old the American Navy cam to Glasgow, Scotland and that was to me amazing. Crowds of them in uniform with their cute little white caps they were everywhere sightseeing and I actually saw my first real live black man. One day a few friends and I got enough courage to say "Any gum chum?" to a group of about 4 sailors we thought we were being real cute! One of the sailors asked me if I would like to write to his sister in St. Louis...I was thrilled said yes, got her address and we kept in touch for a few years. She sent me my very first pair of nylon stocking, with black seams all my friends were green with envy. It is shame I now live in the States but do not remember her name or address.

It really is a shame when we get separated like that. Your experience with penpals was way more exciting than mine. I never did get or give a gift and I can barely imagine how thrilled you must have been with those stockings. I am rather surprized at how many people actually have been penpals at some point. Interesting.

I had a penpal from Korea, I don't remember why we ever quit writing. I guess we got older and got involved in more things. I was in school. Now its so easy to write back and forth, you could say we are all penpals here, sort of. maybe we should say keyboard friends, since we use the keyboard. Computers do make it so easy to keep in touch with everyone. Its so easy to share pictures, recipes, jokes. What the heck did we ever do before we got our computers. I am always on mine, even before I did my ebay thing. I am doing pretty good with that, I am eating and my lights are still on. But then the electric company can't shut the lights off during the winter, hehe. Are you still in contact with your penpal. I have a neighbor that has had a penpal for something like 50 or 60 years. They have even met, the live across the ocean from each other.

I'm like you I don't know why linda and I stopped writing but I'm sure it's because we got a bit older and started dating and so o. We never met but exchanged photos. She was a dark skinned girl and very pretty that's all I remember about her. We have so much in common. I'm always on my computer too. I can pride myself on the fact i do have nice writing, I always have. I am getting a bit shaky now but it's still not all that bad. You're right we are keyboard penpals. Glad you're doing well on Ebay but our news tells us that power sellers will now need to pay taxes. I hope you're not a power seller in one way. This is going to hurt. Thanks.

I have always had good penmanship although I am somewhat shaky on my bad days but my writing is still pretty good. The computer has however taken away the need for a writing pad and pen.

Years ago during grade school I did. This was before the popularity of computers and email. She was from Greece. Isn't that a shame. I wrote to her for months. Even got a picture somewhere. And for the life of me, I cannot remember her name. Now I guess everything is emails.

I had a penpal when I was about 12 or so, my mom actually become penpals with this girl's aunt though some kind of penpal service and then when they discovered that her niece and I were the same age, we started to exchange letters as well. She was from Austrilia and I am here in the States so it was really interesting and fun. Also my class had a soldier in the Gulf War when I was a bit older and we wrote to him for the year and that was interesting. This has actually kind of made me think of googling penpals to see if I could find one for now! LOL

I actually still have a penpal. We've corresponded for 24 years now. We do more email than anything now, but we still send each other cards and letters. I used to read teen magazines when I was younger, and one of them had this match up thing where readers would enter their interests and then the people from the magazine would match them up. I adore my friend, and I'm hoping that one of these days we will get to meet face to face.

When I was about 12 I got one of the teen magazines and wrote all kinds of letters to other teens and got all kinds of answers. I can remember 3 of them in particular since they wrote the longest. One was a guy and I could probably have met him at one time, but I was so painfully shy that it never happened. I think that he thought that I was a "nerd" with some of the reasons I gave him at one point for why we couldn't meet. I had another who it seemed we agreed on many of the things that we thought were the best at the time but I think that she out grew me and went on ahead of me. At one time, and maybe at about the same time, I had a penpal from Mexico that I had to take somewhere to have translated. That is all that I remember about that one. I think it started out at school. Also when I was a teen, I had a penpal from Japan and I had him for a long time. It was interesting to learn a little about his culture, not that I remember any of it now. I do still have some postcards that he sent me. I can't really remember why we stopped writing to each other. Then when I went to college I started a letter to a prisoner and he handed my name on to someone else who became my first husband........what a mistake that turned out to be, except I have 4 wonderful grown children from that marriage and 10 grandchildren. I met my second husband through penpalling also, which was indirectly from my first.......and from another prisoner that I was writing to. He wasn't a prisoner though. I wrote to other prisoners and I have also connected with a penpal club through yahoo, and have none of the prisoners still writing, but am hoping to start writing to the others AND I have an email friend who also snail mails me as well. I am not as well a pen wwriter as before, but I do still like writing and hope to do some more penpalling that isn't just on the computer.

I had some lovely pen pals when I was in grade school and junior high. Some correspondences only last a few letter and some went back and forth with me for awhile. I don't know hardly anyone who writes letters anymore. It's a shame, but emailing back and forth is handy and I get more info back and forth that way too. I don't know that I would be as comfortable emailing to perfect strangers and I definitely wouldn't encourage my kids to strike up email "pen pals". Not the same at all!

Back when I was in high school, most of my classmates were engaged with this IYS (International Youth Service) thing. I registered for that and I got one penpal from Brazil. Anyways, it is just so sad that the IYS has closed this year because there has been less youth subscribing to its service. Well, I wish they predicted the emergence of friendster and other online sites.

I grew up on a farm. Usually, I saw no one except my parents and two younger brothers from one Sunday to the next during the summer when there was no school. There was plenty of work, but I was still frequently lonesome. To combat that, I wrote letters to my penpals. I was not lucky enough to have one from another country, though.

An attractive girl in her 3rd year in Nursing once accidentally dropped her school ID on her bus seat beside me. I'm the shy-type you see, so there was no conversation between us during the trip. So I wrote a letter attaching her ID with it. The exchange surprisingly lasted almost a year and a half. It was fun while it lasted. And that was my only penpal experience. With regards to penmanship, mine then was kind of remarkable. My friends often had me re-write their loveletters because my penmanship was good. Now, it's not that good anymore. Two factors contributed to my deteriorating penmanship. The wear and tear caused by time (in other words, aging) and my patience. In chatting for instance, I'd rather voice- chat than type-chat, because I don't have the patience to wait until I'm done writing before my message is conveyed.

I wonder if she really accidently dropped her ID ? I think that was a very unique happening and I can see where this could have had a romantic ending. Thank You for your response it was good hearing from you.

When I was a child, I had a few penpals. My father was in the Army, so we traveled around a lot to different countries, which gave me lots to talk about in my letters. I am still in touch with one of my penpals from the UK - after 50 years! Now that we have the internet, I have acquired 2 special penpals and we communicate regularly on the computer. In fact, one of them (from Canada) has been to visit me a couple of times (I live in Australia), and we are now firm friends!

When you're young it's great to have penpals. When I was a teenager I had a few penpals and we exchanged letters often. It was fun to share pictures, stories and life events with somebody you're own age from another part of the world or country. And you're right, it is good practice for penmanship. It seems like the tradition of having old fashion penpal's isn't as popular as it use to be because of the internet. We exchange emails now instead of mailing letters.

I use to have one in Germany. She was also related to me somehow though. Eventually we quite writting though. It's hard to keep in touch with someone that is so different to you. I really never knew what to say to her. She knew English, but not all that well so a lot of the times it was really hard to understand her letters.

I have a pen pal. I'm on a site for moms and so some of us have started PenPalling as well. We write pretty regularly. Usually exchange letters every other week or so. She's really fun to talk to, and it's nice to take some time out of the day and write a pen and paper letter. It may be childish seeing as we're both grown adults, but we also like to stick stickers on the back of the envelopes when we send each other letters.

Yes! When I was in 7th grade I got a penpal from Korea through my school. She and I kept in touch for over 6 years! It was great to meet someone from across the globe. Now, I find penpals online at interpals. It's a great site, you should check it out.
