I don't think laptops are meant to be turned on and remain turned on for long periods of time. I think it has something to do with the chips they have. They're quite sensitive and they have no room to breathe, unlike desktops which has efficient fans and big casings that lets the air breathe through.
You should take care of your laptop more because they can't handle the heat that much. If you're meaning to use them in long periods of time, I'd suggest you get a desktop. It's more durable than a laptop.
I am online for around more or less 17 hours max.

It is certainly harmful for your laptop to be working 24/7. Lets see the simple structure of your laptop. It contains a lot of circuits and those circuits could really get heated up a lot. Though the circuits are designed to with stand a lot of work load and heat (generated during processing of data) ,but still in order to maintain the long life of your laptop you must give a break of at least half hour after every 5-8 hours.
It help the circuits to cool down properly and also helps in reducing data redundancy(as the hard drive is also given a break).

laptops are delicate and that is a fact. plus they heat up very quicly and so i personally think it is always not recommended to have them on for the whole day. but then if you are in the office with AC workking then it is a different thing. you ahve a good temperatue and so the ting will not heat up that much as in normal conditions. but stil i think that even the machines need a rest for long life. it is a one or two time thing then it is ok. but not a regualr thing.

Really speaking it is very bad to stay on laptop/desktop for whole 24/7.I want to ask you a question that, what you do all that time on computer?I may assume that you try to earn more money by surfing more time, right. How much you can earn?may be maximum $10,that means 300$/month right. And within one month you will be on a stracher in a hospital.and there you have to spend tons of tons of money or you may die because of sever sleep disturbance. So,i suggest you don't stay more tahn 5 hrs/day on computer.Even i spend only 2hrs/day on my computer.

Well, it depends actually
Most laptops are not designed for using of 24*7, but I think it's totally OK to keep them running for 1 or 2 days occasionally.
some laptops, however, is really well-designed and can take care of the heat issue quite well. My wife works for Samsung and they have a new model which is designed to be a desktop re placer. It has a nice 17" screen with normal size keyboard. I think that one can fit to be run 24*7. But it's really big
