I was wondering the other day about what people do when they get hiccups. I simply push the flaps of my inner ear in with my thumbs and then use the knuckles of my fore finger to push my nostrils closed, then take a deep breathe and hold it for as long as I can. I then very slowly release the air in my mouth and, hey presto the hiccups have gone! I have been doing this for many years now, not that I actually get hiccups that often but it always works when I do it. If by chance it doesn't work then usually it is because I have let the air out too quickly and do it again with success.
What do you do when you get hiccups?

Hiya Humbug
LOL brillant discussion hun, well I just hold my breathe but your right if the hiccups are still there once I release it, then I have to repeat the process and do it properly.

Hi there scorpio how's you? Good I hope!
Like I said in a previous response, I really hate it when I have been hiccupping for like ages and ages to the point that it starts to hurt and when they finally go I am waiting thinking I am going to hiccup again and that's horrible. I haven't had hiccups in ages though, thank goodness!!
Thanks scorpio

I read about that technique somewhere. I haven't tried it yet. But it clearly works. I will try it (if I can remember it) next time. Usually I hold my breath or try to burp. Depends where I am. Problem with burping is that sometimes it comes out of the wrong end! How to win friends and influence people!

Hi ya p1kef1sh
I think the idea is to block the oretheses (I know I have spelt it wrong but I am tired - that is my excuse, it is a good one and I am sticking to it!) and stop any air from getting in. I am not sure how many brain cells you lose during this process, a lot in my case!! Burping might do that to you but it sure doesn't me and just so that you know, I think that was too much info LOL
Cheers p1key

I would have to try and remember this great solution my friend, but you know how it is, the day you get hiccups and you can't find or remember your quick fix remedy to rid myself of the irritating bodily function! Although having said that it is very rare for me to suffer with this problem, in the past I have tried and tested many ways but they never seem to work, I hope I can remember your great advice if I ever do!

I rarely get hiccups, but when I do get them I drink water in small sips. Another way to curb hiccups is to drive your attention to some other stuff(but it is not that easy, you are tempted to think about the hiccups). I tell an interesting thing that here in India hiccups are considered as remembrance. That is when you get hiccups it is said that someone is remembering you, any near relative or any friend! So the next time if you are not able to stop them just feel nice that someone is thinking about you!

good that this pattern will help you get rid of hiccups but it dont work for us may be as you tell it is due to wrong procedure or so and when we get hiccups we try to just put two drops of lime and it helps and instantly stops the hiccups. using water and taking deep breathe and all didnt help us but this works.

lol I had to responed to this discussion when I saw it on the home page, my son has the hiccups right now, what we do that always works on him is when he is not expecting it we scare him, yes he cries but it get's rid of the hiccups. Although on the other hand for me I hold my breath in for 10 seconds and this usually always helps me and if it don't I drink a glass of water upside down. But I hardly ever get hiccups thank goodness because I hate the hiccups. Well it was nice responding and Happy Mylotting.

Hi ya Seppy1984
How old is your son? They say that when babies get hiccups it bothers adults more than it bothers the baby!! LOL . I know that making someone jump really does get rid of them but if you are by yourself your kinda bit stuck hahaha
Thank you for your response and I am glad you liked the discussion

My son is two. I don't think they bother him and I know they don't bother me but when he has them then it gives me an excuse to scare him.....lol

I do not get hiccups really. My daughter gets them a lot. I tell her to hold her breath for the count of ten, then drink some water. It does not really work though, but I always say this as my Mother told me the same thing.
This one is meant to work though but I have not tried it.
(1) Pour a TALL glass of water.
(2) Hold your breath... ***
(3) IMPORTANT...PINCH YOUR NOSE CLOSED.
(4) Slowly, take 10 - 20 swallows of the water...while holding your breath with your nose pinched closed.
(5) When you can't stand it any more....you'll know by that overwhelming drowning sensation -- after a gasp, take a deep breath and relax.
This cures the hiccups 99 percent of the time - guaranteed! It's a proven medical remedy!

a spoonful of peanut butter was a remedy my daughter brought home from school. And It works for her!! This doesn't work for my other daughter however she tries to hold her breath for as long as she can or else just waits until they go on there own.

I never had a fool proof technique for hiccups. however a few months ago i was watching a show on TLC about cases in the E.R at a certain hospital. There was a woman that came in that had them for 8 days. They tried everything you could imagine, the doctor even tried giving her a sedative to make her sleep but she still had the hiccups. After several other techniques, they read about one where you have someoen take their index finger and middle finger and place them just above your eyes, (both eyes) and the person with teh hiccups presses against their friends fingers as hard as they can.
I have no clue why this is suppose to work, but since i seen it, i have tried it on my 5 yr old, and he has put his fingers above my eyes when I have had them, and well I will be darn if each and every time it worked! Strange I know, but what works, works, whatever the reason.

I have a couple different things i do when i get the hiccups cause one dosn't always work. First i try the old hold your breathe and count to ten which rarely work. then i try guzzling a glass of mountain Dew to make myself burp. if that dosn't work I try to technique a friend once told me which i thought was weird. I get a drink and i bend over and drink upside down. I know it sounds weird but it works you just have to turn the cup the opposite way you usually drink. Now for y baby when he gets the hiccups i give him sugar water and it works every time.

Another cure is to hold your ears and drink a glass of water. It works every time.
