I'm currently using DELL Latitude, a company laptop and I must say it's not really good. It's quite 'fragile'. I'm having problems with the battery, the LCD display and also the keyboard and it's only been slightly more than 2 years!
And I'm actually thinking of getting a good laptop for my personal usage so that I can install my personal applications and do my own stuff (maybe some gaming). What brand of laptop do you think is good?
I know ACER is lousy and Fujitsu is good. But Fujitsu is overly expensive.

I'm sorry to say i cant' agree with you. I'm a programmer also. I'm using DELL Vostro 1500 last two years. Its give me very good services still today. I using .net with oracle and lots of software. I also play game (like Call of Duty: World at War, Crysis Warhead, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning) on my laptop. I cant' find out any kind of problem. That's why love DELL. And allows I advice my friend to buy DELL.

DELL Vostro is lower end than Latitude series. In terms of hardware, there's not much problem. What I'm referring to are the batteries, the keyboard and the LCD screen. :) These are pretty famous issues with DELL, and even DELL admitted.

The laptop I have used is Compag Evo and I switched to Sony Vaio. With my new laptop which is Sony Vaio, I have nothing to say against it. It is really nice and I love it!! Very comfortable keyboard, got switch on and off for wifi and it has 3GB of hard drive and can be extend or upgrade to 4GB. So, I can tell that Sony Vaio is the best laptop ever!

It's a company laptop so our folks in the IT support will handle DELL, not us. :)

Hi there, I would prefer a Lenovo Laptop. Currently I have a Compaq which is old enough to have a replacement. I am aiming to have a Lenovo Laptop but like what you said it is a bit expensive. I wanted a Think Pad of Lenovo. Can I ask on how to install a XP on a Laptop with Sata HD? Thanks!

SATA is just the speed of the connectivity. If the laptop comes with it, it shouldn't make any difference. It just means your mainboard and HDD can talk to each other faster. What you need is just a bootable XP disc. :)
And yeah, Lenovo is very expensive!

Buying a laptop is a complicated decision which will probably affect you daily for the next few years.
In addition to price and specs, you want to consider things such as ease-of-use, speed, reliability, stylish-design and tech-support.
Different people would have different opinions.
Therefore, I would recommend you to check ProCompare.com (http://procompare.com). They have a recommendation engine that ranks laptops and other tech products based on ratings and reviews from a community of trusted IT professionals. They also have a cool personalization slider that lets you personalize the results based on the criteria that are most important to YOU.
Hope you'll find this answer useful...

HP tends to be more expensive than DELL. Not sure if it can last longer than DELL.

Looking at DELL XPS 1530, but it only has GeForce 8000 series, and not 9000. :(

I think Dell laptops are best as they provide large range of features at an affordable price. They usually have good screen TFT view, Dell's speakers are very loud, they have good battery life. I think you can go for Dell XPS for best gaming purpose.

XPS is good. No doubt. But I seriously think you should reconsider the line "battery is good". :P I've been using DELL for 5 years now. :P

But the HP support in my country is very problematic. My cousin just bought a laptop with a problematic AC adapter. The HP support told her there's no way to get a new AC adapter since they don't sell that. :|

well, when it comes to the selection of laptop brands, I simply say MAC. I know they are expensive but remember laptop is one with which i spend my most of the time doing hell of things. SO there is no scope of negotiation with brands. The best thing that I like about apple is less (almost negligible) prone to virus and threats. Plus this brand adds a style statement to its users.
Sorry for being one sided with the recommendation but think of this, a really good laptop with other companies is not cheaper (when we compare the config and all other features). So, friends I have used almost every popular brand of laptops and would strongly recommend Apple as 'the best' on a long term basis.

A lot of my existing applications are running on Windows platform. I did consider about MAC before but it's just too difficult to switch so many over.
Though I must admit I will change to Windows XP from the VISTA provided by most laptop companies EVERY TIME.

ACER? They used to be very bad last time until most of the users gave up on it. Lenovo is very good but it's pricey.

I'm a heavy laptop user and I'm a programmer. The laptop must be strong enough to install memory intensive applications. :D
