Are we putting Homeland Security in hands of inexperience?

President-elect Barack Obama's top choice to lead the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano. Other than some activity regarding clamping down in illegal immigration, I don't see that she has the type of experience we might expect someone to have to is going to be in charge of Homeland Security. Wouldn't you expect to see someone with more security or military experience. People were concerned that Governor Palin didn't have this type of experience, and now Obama is putting a person with the same in a key security position.

I have known of people with less experience to do a bang up job and those with experience still stink, lol. So, I guess it is a wait and see type of thing.

I guess I expect there to be a higher degree of staff where our government is concerned. I would think they would want to recruit the best available where our Homeland Security is concerned.

As with anything, we will just have to wait and see what occurs. I do believe, however, that it our job as American citizens to hold out politicians accountable for these choices - to hold their feet to the fire to make sure they do what is best for our country.

Being the head of an educational program, I have also been questioned about some staff that I hired, based on their public experience, but I had delved deeper into them than was known by others. Once they were doing their jobs, it became apparent that they were the best for the job. I also had hired a few who came highly recommended, had all of the experience and resumés that supported them being the best for the job, but when they were actually working for me, they wound up not being the best. I listened to others instead of following my own instincts on these people and wound up removing them from my staff. Essentially, what I am saying is, what I said before. It remains to be seen. We do not know these people beyond what we know and there could be more there then we see or know. :D BTW, I love this discussion. Thanks for being one to bring up good ones. :D

My husband contracts to Homeland Security and Customs and hasn't said anything about it yet. Guess I should ask him. I think he chose her because she has so much experience with Border Security. I personally like that she is asking for reports on cyber security which is a growing concern as it can affect so many things. While serving as Arizona's attorney general, she created the computer crimes unit to train law enforcement on how to identify and investigate cybercrimes. As Governer, she created the Statewide Information Security and Privacy Office to protect the state's networks. According to one article, " oral and written reports from agencies on their efforts to protect the nation's critical infrastructures, including those of the telecommunications, chemical and transportation sectors; to develop a system of risk analysis for critical systems; promote intelligence sharing with state and local governments; secure air, surface and maritime transportation; and to integrate federal security policies with those of state, local and tribal governments." Strength in these quarters is very important to future security. I feel it was a good choice, security has been her mission long before she was given the lead role in Homeland Security. And border protection was an acute issue when she was governor. She's always been focused on getting things done rather than ideological ideas.

Well said! There are probably few people in this country with more experience for a position like this. Annie

Keep in mind, that as Governer of Key Border state with Mexico, its an issue she is acutely familiar with dealing with. She has the experience. Not sure where it may have said she doesn't have experience in this type of thing. Do you have the article links?

I guess it is all right for the Democrats to put someone with no experience in the field of Homeland Security, but not the Republicans. Another case of "do as we say, not as we do." And I would not trust Obama to put anyone in charge of anything. He does not want to stop illegal immigration, with the influence of his former pastor it is in his best interest to have more people adoring him.

I did note one statement in her profile that seems to be a common thread in many of Obama's choices: In 1993, Napolitano was appointed by President Bill Clinton as United States attorney for the District of Arizona. - the key works being President Bill Clinton".

My issue with her is her high praise of a 9/11 memorial that is an insult to the victims of that attack. Take a minute and look it up, in Arizona. Talks about an american attack on civilians, american violence against muslums, quotes like you cannot fight terrorism with terrorism, the list goes on. It's horrendous and I wish someone would just take a stick of dynomite to this abaomination.

Well at least this might be some good news for McCain. Presumably if Napolitano is at Homeland Security she won't be challenging him for his Senate seat come 2010!

This is probably true. This is her last term as Governor and she would probably be looking at the Senate at that time.

Another "clinton person". IF the public wanted a "clinton" cabinet they would have elected Hilary when they had the chance.

At first I thought that all of the former Clinton people being selected was an effort for him to fill the positions with people that have the experience that Obama, himself, does not have. Some of the more recent ones, however, don't reflect that, as they don't have the experience you would expect for the positions they are to be filling.

How is she any less experienced than former Pa. Governor Tom Ridge was when he became the first Homeland Security Secretary? Maybe she'll even come up with something more than color-coded terror alerts! Annie

She is an expert, she has been dealing with this and has acute experience in this from her role as Governor in a key border state.

Its also very important to note that Border Control is not the only important issue that Homeland Security faces. There are many other areas she is well versed in that she will need for her role as Homeland Security leader.

That is exactly the point - why are we putting people with so little experienced into such positions when there are surely "experts" across our country that would better serve?
