Does it matter if you say "Oh My God"?

My position is, I don't believe in God, but I used to. I say it, and not for any other reason than I'm just used to it. Everyone says it. I'm a teenager. It would be impossible to stop, if I had any reason to. It doesn't really matter to me. I notice for most people, no matter what they believe in, they say it, and it's no problem to them, while some really religious people don't like it when someone says God's name in vain. What's your stance?

if I was to say "oh my God" then no Christian has any right to be offended at my language. why? because I'm not talking about their God. I'm talking about MY God. and My God has never expressed any kind of disapproval to me for me saying "oh my God" as it is an expression of surprise, not an expression of blasphemy. it shows no disrespect, just OH MY GOD, my God, that is surprising/shocking/annoying etc. it seems very egocentric to assume that when everyone says "oh my God" that they are in some way making any comment about any being you beleive in. they could be talking about someone else entirely

it proably started out as invoking protection in startling situations, rather than being blasphemous, anyway.

Exactly, it's not as though saying "Oh my god" can possibly translate to "I'd just love to see that big sucker put me in hell! Try me! Haha!" I just don't think it means anything at all. If the dude in the sky exists, I'm sure he's not so sensitive as to really care about those three, really really common words. We people do so much worse!

I definitely do not say that. The Bible says in Exodus 20:7 NIV, "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name." I don't understand how any Christians use that phrase, knowing what the Bible says about it. It also confuses me that anyone who doesn't believe in God would use that phrase. It makes no sense.

I don't say it because it makes sense to me; it does not. However, everyone around me says it, it's just a habit and I don't notice it when I say it. It means nothing to me, really. But I guess if it means something to someone, it's their worry over whether to say it or not.

I don't like to hear my children say this and I try my best to keep from saying it as well. What made you not believe in God any longer? You stated you used to but changed your belief, just makes me curious.

Hmmmmm everybody keeps saying it is taking God's name in vain. I always thought of the word "God" as more of a description or title rather than a name. The Christian God's name (I was always told) is Jehovah or Yahweh. To muslims it's Allah or... well there are thousands of Gods and Goddesses around the world all with their own name. Anyway, I usually say "oh my goodness" or leave it at "oh my". I do catch myself every once in a while though. I try not to offend anyone.

Actually I agree with you in that many use the expression as an ultimate expression of feeling. Whether it be surprise, disgust, happiness or whatever. It has become such a common "all purpose" expression though that I think sometimes people use it out of habit without thinking at all. Like saying owwww or ouch when you feel pain.

I try not to say it. I consider it like taking the Lord's name in vain. But, it is SUCH a common expression that it just slips out sometimes. I am trying to control myself more.

I think it just might be the most common expression in the English language, I don't think it takes a thought to say it.

As a teenager, I used to say it. 'Father forgive them for they know not what they do'. But once you know its wrong, and you then do things what are wrong, then that is wrong by itself. You say you don't believe in God. Why? What made you that way? I'm not preaching, but would like to help you. I too had stopped believing for some time. I really don't know what made me believe again. No, its not difficulties. But when I started believing, I started going through so many troubles. God does not give us those troubles. Its satan. God helps us get through those troubles. He's there for us at all times. Believe in Him. I will definitely pray for you.

I don't think saying "Oh my God" that this is taking the Lords name in vane. It's just an exclaimation. Like saying "Oh my Goodness" they are exclaimations.

I have used the term, Oh my God, before also. I do believe in god. I heard that it is using his name in vain when we say that though, but I am not sure.

[b]Hi Sheepie, to some people it's offensive, catholics are not suppose to use it. It's one of their comments. Thy should use god's name in vain. So in other words we can not just use his name for the heck of it. But I do. I'm no teenager, was raise catholic and it's something that I've said for years. There are people who will tell you not to say that, i don't see anything wrong. But this is my opinion.

Well, I don't particularly believe in one, but I don't dismiss it. I just don't think about it much. But if there is one, I definately don't think of it as the one other people portray it as, with all the hate they create with it.

well saying oh my god is actually using his name in vain. although you say you don't believe in god now you still got to remember there is a possibility that there is a god and for that fact i would refrain from saying it if all possible

God can be whatever you belive in, it doesnt have to have a gender or come from just one religious beliefe. as for oh my god! its only an expression, to me it doesnt have to be related to religion at all, regardless of your beliefes its still remain just as an expression.

These days it is a common secular expression. Most people use it and they don't mean any disrespect.I know I use it as an expression of surprise. My respect for G-d has nothing to do with it.I believe that is true for most people.

i am not that religious, but i do belive that the name of the Lord should not be used in vain. God is so wonderful and powerful that His name to be used just for ordinary things. He does not delight in it, but i know He understands those who uses it in vain. that is why, for me as a believer, i firmly believe that He chose me to know Him to be able to share to others the real God that i am worshipping. my friend, i am sad that you don't belive in Him. He is your creator and lover. i just hope that even if you don't belive Him, you wil not use His name in vain.. thanks.. and remember, GOD loves YOU!

ut if someone doesn't believe in your God, then they are not talking about your God when they say "oh MY God" are they. they are talking about their God. if they have no belief in any deity, then they're not talking about anyone. if I say Oh My God, I'm talking about MY God. who I suspect is not your God. so how can you consider them to be using the name of YOUR God in vain if they say Oh MY God.

I don't think that's what the Bible meant when it said don't use the Lord's name in vain. The televangelist who takes money from old people who can't afford it is using God's name in vain. The priest who molests the child is using the Lord's name in vain. The charlatan who claims he can heal in God's name is using that name in vain. All these people--men and women--are misrepresenting God in the worst way and that is using the Lord's name in vain. I won't go on and rant. You get the idea...there's one particular church that abusing the Lord's name that if you get me going on it-and you almost did!-I'll carry on for ten minutes at least!

Yes, yes yes. I think that if there is a God, he wouldn't be offended by a meaningless little phrase that really doesn't mean anything and just happens to have his "name" in it. I think it's terrible that people do what you described... definately too common for anyone's comfort!

i don't suppose it matters if you say "oh my god" but it is somethnig we don't say in our house. It just doesn't sound very nice, along side shut up etc we just don't like those sorts of words. We are not really relious just words we don't like to come out of our children's mouths.

God is not His name, it's a job description and even though I know this, it still bothers me when people are so cavalier with its usage.

The word god is a title not a name.
