The Humane Society of the United States has had an 8 month investigation into reports that PetLand gets its puppies from puppy mills. PetLand has been denying this but today HSUS released proof. Go to the link above to see what they found. I bought one beta fish from them years ago but promise that is the last penny they will receive from me!!! How does this change the way you feel about PetLand???

If buyers would not buy from petland or puppy farms all things thing would stop. I would recommend reputable breeders as the best chocie

In 58 years, I've ONLY ever gotten one dog from a breeder. The rest of my babies were ALL strays except my current male Lab. His momma belonged to a girl I worked with & he was given to me because he's not a pure Lab. I PREFER mixed breed Heinz 57 varieties. They make better dogs. Plus I'm not a fancy type of person!!!

I heard this a long time ago, too. All of my pets were strays that we found and a few that people could not keep so we took them in, other than hamsters and birds that we bought from a small, local pet shop. If I had just found out, it would keep me from going there and I would also be writing letters to them, if I had been a customer.
Once again, money is more important than ethics.

Yes, I had been hearing this for quite a while & was just waiting on the proof to rise to the top. I've ALWAYS taken in strays. My male Lab was born to a litter of the momma that a girl I worked with owned & she gave him to me for an Easter present. my female Lab was a stray turned in to a local vet & was going to be sent to the pound & more than likely put to sleep. The vet gave her ALL her shots & spayed her in exchange for my taking her. My 2 little black furbabies (kittens) were adopted from the Humane Society. These 2 are the FIRST cats I've ever had that weren't just strays that stopped by one day & said hey Mom!!!
I firmly believe that GREED will be the downfall of this country!!!

Well if they have proof then they must have done it and this is awful - shame on them! I always thought "PetLand" was one of the few places that you could trust and had the animals best interest at heart. I am shocked to hear this.

I, too, was shocked!!! Their stores are so nice. I don't know about anywhere else, but the PetSmart here gets almost ALL their puppies from the local Humane Society. I've never heard the agreement they have on the costs.

We do not have any PetLand's around here that I know of. I think everyone involved needs to be put behind bars for doing that to those poor animals. We do have a PetSmart here and they bring in a few cats and dogs ever so often from the Humane Society for adoption.

Yes, the PetSmart here does the same & showcase puppies & kittens from the local Humane Society. We do have a PetLand here & I was impressed with their store. I bought one Beta fish from them many years back. I do know that will be the LAST thing I ever buy from there. If I had treated my babies like theirs were treated at the puppy mill, I would be in jail. I bet NO ONE will go to jail from, PetLand as everybody will blame it on someone else. What I don't understand is why the owners of the puppy mills aren't prosecuted!!! I think the public will take care of PetLand...or atleast I hope they do!!! Now, who is going to take care of the puppy mills???

I agree. I bet they go out of business as the American public will see to that. I also bet NO ONE ever ends up in jail from it. If my neighbor turned me in for not leaving water for my dog, I'd be put in jail. Yet these places strive on abusing the dogs & subsequent puppies & nothing is done about it. It's NOT like they're hiding.

Hi LadyMarissa,
Words failed me, I think is disgusting, why are people doing these things? the govermant should do something about it, I am glad we don't have any thing like taht here and as we are a nation of dogs lover we never trat animal like that, if anyone was found ill treating dogs the could be put in prison and we have R.S.P.C.A that looks after animals that are ill treated and we also have dogs shelter, they are in every town. We don't let that sort of things happen here. I am so angry!!!.

Why do they do it??? GREED!!!
If I treated my dog like that, I'd be prosecuted & spend years in jail. Yet the puppy mills get away with it.

I'm not surprised. I think most pet shops - even the small mom & pop stores - buy from puppy mills. I think it's disgusting.

There are no Petland's in my area. I actually had never heard of them until Grandpa Bob posted a discussion about it prior to this one. I think it's horrible and they should be shut down and arrested.

That is so sad and disgusting ;( I can't even watch that. It reminds me of some of the terrible videos from www.peta.com. IAMS pet food treats it's test animals in a similar fashion. And people wonder why I prefer animals to people. Human is the only animal that tortures and kills for pleasure! I have to go hug and kiss my cats right now, my heart hurts so badly for all those animals out there who aren't as fortunate as mine are. You were right, I am crying ;(

Are those the mall stores? Those things need shut down anyway. Charging 900 bucks for a puppy just because it has a 100 dollar microchip in it is absurd. Not to mention keeping them in those tiny glass boxes surrounded by their own poop.
Im not sure why getting puppies from mills is a bad thing unless they employ the mills. They may look at it as saving them from that situation to place them in better homes, the humane society gets their puppies from mills and resells them . . . I disagre completely with the practice as an avid dog lover but id rather see them in a store to be placed than in a pen w/ thousands of other dogs waiting to be raised to breed.
I dont think people realize how much blood is shed for them to be able to have "nice" things, diamonds, purebred dogs, fancy food, so much harm done to cater to people with money.
