I have noticed that a lot of people don't read the discussion they just read the subject and thats it!
The subject isn't always the only question and some times really doesn't have much to do with the actual discussion! For instance I have a discussion out there with the subject "how do you do it and what do you call it" The discussion is do you vacuum or dust first and do you call a vacuum - a vacuum sweeper or what. My point is that first line has really nothing to do with a vacuum - you would ONLY know that if you read the discussion part.
Or there is my "perfect present" discussion where it talks about what is the perfect present YOU bought for some one else - not what YOU get for you. Again you would ONLY know that if you read the WHOLE discussion!!
What discussions have you started that people were totally off base in responding to? Are you guilty of NOT reading the WHOLE discussion?? Do you post a question in the subject or a general idea or some thing else?

I noticed a few people having this issue lately.I've had it a couple times myself but cant remember a specific discussion. I tend to think ummm yeah they didnt read what i wrote before answering.
On occasion I'm guilty of not reading the whole discussion I latch on to the part i understand or have an answer to and run with that. Some times im guilty of not having the on topic answer for a discussion because i misunderstood what the original poster meant when they were talking.
I try to put a general idea in the subject not a question lately because then people seem to actually read the discussion to find out my point.

Hi ebsharer,
I always read the discussion completely before responding. In fact sometimes I am not getting what they want to ask and after reading the content, I can understand the real issue. I also seen some people are replying arrogantly. I am sure that the particular person didn't read the content. If the discussion is very lengthy it may take time to read and those don't want to read the whole discussion, they can ignore the discussion rather than giving baseless reply.
Everytime it is not possible to include the main theme in topic. We have to add our opinion and it is possible only in the content part. I think I am doing justice to my comments. Thanks for putting this discussion and I hope it may helps to others to realising the importance of reading the whole discussion.

I have to admit I'm ambivalent about some of the way out there subjects - probably meant to grab attention for the discussion. Some subjects just irritate me and some are intriguing enough to find out what the discussion is really about. So, yes, I do read the whole discussion.
I don't post many discussions anymore - brain drain, can't think of any lately. So I don't post questions, probably couldn't think of a good one to play off my discussion. I'm just enjoying answering discussions lately.

I have been doing a little of both. I respond to way more then I start but I always make sure to read the discussion. I have found that the subject can be more intresting then the discussion so I go on to the next one. In fact I think I read more then I acutally respond to!

hi! ebsharer..i have read the whole article you have posted it is very clear here.., that from your observation people don't read the whole discussion they just read the subject and jump. For me, if i wouldn't be able to read the whole discussion. I felt guilty and i'm not contented and i want to go back with the topic if i don't understand it...How i wish people would have the patience to read the discussion it's just the same saying a speaker having a good listener.

I am relatively new here and don't have a lot of experience in this forum. However, I think the discussion you've opened is a worthy one and I wanted to reply.
I always read the whole discussion, both to understand what the original poster was saying and to see what others thought about the subject.
I've only started one discussion myself and apparently those who responded understood what I was saying because their comments were on point. Although this is a new medium for me, I am an experienced public speaker so when I started my first discussion I stated the topic in the subject line and asked the questions in the content section. I will probably continue this practice because that is the way I was trained to work up a talk.
I do have a couple of observations. It seems to me that a lot of people here are in too big of a hurry to see their words in print. If they took a moment to read over what they had typed before they hit the post button they could correct spelling, grammar, punctuation and typo's. This would make it easier for their readers to understand what they mean. Also, I enjoy responding to discussions where I'm sure my comments will be read. I will respond more often to those discussions where I see that the original poster replies to most of the responders.
Thanks for opening this discussion and reading my long post.

Don't apoligize for having a long post thats how you make money! When they say be as descriptive as possiable they mean it! Welcome to mylot - its a great discussion board.
I personally am guilty of just posting some thing and not rereading what I put but if I have a long response then I usually do it in microsoft word because I can't spell and I know I will end up with typos! LOL

I have forgot to post some thing too and then when back and added it. I did it last week in fact I wrote about hiccups and what I do when I have them. My response was when some one was with me and I forgot to put what I did when I was alone. So I went back and commented.

Actually if a discussion gets too long I just stopand look for another discussion. You are right you should respond accordingly. :)

You shouldn't be responding at all! Thats just crappy of you to only be here for the money there is a lot more to mylot then that! The person who started the discussion CARES if your response is relevant or not otherwise that person wouldn't have started the discussion to being with!

I read the whole discussion. I think titles can be misleading and some people are better at writing them than others.

What discussions have you started ......
None so far, I haven't started many.
Are you guilty of....
Nope, but I do sometimes find the Topic Posted and the content of their post less interesting than the other replies in the thread. Am I guilty because I tend to respond to those parts of the discussion, then yes. I sometimes stray away from the questions being asked by the Main Poster. This is sometimes to elaborate on the parts of the replies which I can offer more explanation, but it is the "gist" of the subject being discussed.
Do you post a question....
I've only started a couple of New Discussions, so I can't say I habitually will start with a Topic Question...

Some people here just want to post as many discussions as they can to increase the number of it, which is really a bad behavour, i don't lnow how people can earn money here, i am a freshman here, but i do know how to post a good respond or a good discussion, for we should take the responsibility for what we have done. By doing that , we will never fill guilty of what we have done, thank for start this discussion.

Oh man I always read through the discussion because I can speedread when I am on the net and if I don't get it the first time, I always try to reread so I can give the best quality response possible. And I don't know if it counts but I've started very specific topics in one of the anime sections and some people just responded with a very general/vague comment like "Thanks for sharing" and saying that it was interesting and could not watch it since they did not have cable when I mentioned I streamed it for free online in the first post. .xD;. It's not like I'm too bothered by it since not very many people respond to me in my favorite section nowadays and my star rating has gone down because of it, but I'm still happy to get responses.

I always read the whole discussion. If I open it and find that it is just too long to read the whole thing, then I make note of what interest category it is in, so that I can come back to it later. There is nothing wrong with waiting until your head is clear, you are more awake, you have more time, you know that you wont' be distracted while trying to type your response, etc. and so on. That's much better than just typing whatever just to be able to respond to it. As long as no more than a day or two go by, it should still be okay to come back and respond to it when you are more able to. I used to feel like I needed to be the FIRST to respond to a topic, but now I know that that's not true. If I have something to say, but no time to say it at the exact time that I discover the topic, then I make note of where it is, and come back later when I DO have time to give my full attention to reading the WHOLE Discussion and to responding with 100% effort.

I try to read the whole discussion, but sometimes they are so darned long that I end of skimmy! So yes I am guilty ONLY sometimes of not reading the whole thing. Though I will try to be a good girl from now on & read ALL of it!! hehe!!
And I usually post a question in the subject line or whatever the topic is of my discussion.
