Land line telephones. Wired or wireless?

Our power went out this morning for a couple of seconds and that got me to wondering about telephones. My husband and I both have our own cell phones, but we also have a land line for our business. We have both wired and wireless so the electricity problem doesn't really affect us but, if you only have a wireless telephone and your power goes out for a long time, my question is Why? Wireless telephones run on electricity and without power you have no phone! This happened to me once after a hurricane trashed our electricity for four days. All we had was a wireless telephone, too! I went out and bought a cheap plug-in phone to use while we had no power and stopped using it once our electricity was restored. What do you have? Why?

That's a very logical question, moon! It's a wonder no one has done anything about that. Yes, you'd think that the internal battery would keep the phone operating during a power outtage! At least, it SHOULD!

Not only do we have wireless, but we have cable phone, so if the power goes out, the phone goes out. I do have a cell, I need it so I can be reached in case there's a problem with my mom.

If I were sitting next to my phone all the time, that'd be one thing, but since I'm on the go, working, or in the car, etc, I have to stay reachable. One of us kids has to, and we all have cells so we can be.

Me & my girl friend both have cell phones... We do have 1 phone hanging in the kitchen wall & there's an answering machine sitting next to desktop computer... We both have unlimited plan so we don't really need home phone but we keep it for our daughter sake... And internet at home is through Verizon DSL so we need to keep a phone line... I'm thinking about changing to cable & do away with home phone all together...

When you add up the cost of the DSL plus the telephone line, it's usually much more expensive than just having cable. That's why I switched many years ago. It made more sense, PLUS cable is much faster than even DSL.

I think that it's all according to who you have DSL through and where the boxes are located. We have DSL through AT & T, but we are really out too far, so we get only 1.5 GHZ. But, our son has it, too, and he gets their fastest 6 GHZ. And, man, it is FAST! He opens a page and it's there! He's had cable and satellite and all the others, and he says this is the fastest service they've ever had.

We've been using wired telephone for years.. it's more reliable than using wireless ones.. wireless phone needs to be charged or else you can't use it to make phone calls most especially when the power is down.. yay! it's totally useless..

I have both and my cell is maily for the road and my land is the main line that we use.I want to have them both all for different reasons but maily for safety sake. The cell phones are just great in case of emergencys and trouble on the road or yes, whenn the power goes off.

My husband and I both have cell phones, but they aren't any good where we live until we get on the road. So we have land lines. We have both wireless and plug in phones. Our electricity hardly ever goes out, but when it does, we have a phone to fall back on. I like the wireless because we can take it out in the yard with us when we are working out there. It would be nice if the company we have our cell phones with would put up towers closer to us.

I understand that completely! I own a house in another county here in Virginia and I can't get a cell phone signal when I'm there unless I'm on the road, either. I have Verizon... you know, those "Can you hear me now?" commercials! Every time I hear them, I say "NO!"

So you are one of those people who use Verizon. We use them, too. I can get a signal out in the road or the front yard closer to the road. Nextel or Cingular (AT & T) can't get a signal down here at all. My daughter has Nextel and has to go up on the mountain before she can get a signal. Verizon is the best of the three, to me.

We have both wired and wireless phones at home. Wireless for the sake of taking calls anywhere in the house and wired so whenever there's no electricity, we can still be reached.

We've got one hard-wired phone and an extension that's wireless. I totally agree with you about wireless phones that run on electricity -- we were at a relative's place when a storm hit them. The power went out for hours and since they've only got a wireless phone (obviously, no Internet too cuz the modem's on electricity) we felt totally cut off. We panicked a bit too because none of us had fully charged our cellphone batteries that time. Anyway, it's safe to say that they went out the next day to get a hard-wired phone unit... but since it was hurricane season that time, Target and Walmart both ran out of these units!!! Thankfully, the power didn't go out again and they were able to get an extra hard-wired unit/fax machine from a friend later that week. They still have that bulky thing in the kitchen too... better safe than sorry, for sure. :)

We only have wired land line telephone at home. Actually we rarely use the land line phone, as both my husband and I are using our cellphones. We applied for the land line is only for the Internet connection. Since wired phone is much cheaper, so we just get the wired one.

My husband and I both have cell phones. We also have the wireless landline phones. We have one wired phone that we keep in the chest at the end of our bed but we don't keep it out unless we need it.

You make a good point. My bf and I have cell phones and wire phone @home. It is a very good idea to have a plug in phone for when the power goes out. It is best to be prepared.

80% of our phoning is by cell phone. I've even stopped long distance service on our land line. I keep it around in case one of my church members needs to reach me.

I would not pay for a landline if not for my mother. She visits about half the year here because of hurricanes where she lives and she has a medical alert thing that needs a landline to plug into. It's worth paying for it to have peace of mind. Otherwise, I'd use my cell phone which is so cheap. I only pay $15 for it and never use up the minutes, I have about 1600 minutes accrued!
