If you enjoy taking risks and you don't have anything on your computer that's worth saving, then go right ahead and do what you're doing. But like some of the other comments said, once you've lost something important, you'll change your mind. It doesn't even take a hard drive failure for you to lose something important. One of my programs messed up recently, and if I didn't have a backup of some of the files, I would have lost some very important stuff. I save to a thumb drive for quick backups. I also have a larger flash drive that I save to, and for stuff that's extra important, including programs that I paid for and don't want to lose, I make a CD.

I think backups are necessary especially if you have files which you have no hard copy of. It is not important to backup the whole hard disk unless you want to use your original settings or old peripherals. An average life time of a hard disk was said to be around five years. It means you have about two years before problems start cropping up. But if you do not switch on your computer for long hours at a time, and do not or rarely play games, your hard disk may survive beyond ten years. Another factor which you should take into consideration is accidental damage. I have used more than 15 hard disks since 1997. I have lost irreplaceable data because I did not make any backup. Currently I use CDs as backup medium. Since flash drives are getting cheaper, they are viable alternatives.

Hi there jabaz! Well, it depends upon the situation. If you have important things saved in your computer, then you definitely need a back-up. But if not, you don't. What my husband does, because he's the one in-charge of technical stuff here in our internet cafe, is that he make partitions. And back-up files using the other partition that he made.
