What is Thanksgiving without Turkey, Dressing and yams? I just read that yams are a southern favorite. Do you have yams with your Thanksgiving dinner? If so how do you prepare your yams? Do you prepare them from scratch of from a can? I prefer the can version of them myself.

I use the canned Yams. I put them in with the ham that I bake along with brown sugar, marshmallows and pineapples. Yummy!

We usually have sweet potatoes every year for Thanksgiving but decided to forgo them this year. We have decided to cut back on the varity of food we will have. We will not be have peacon or pumpkin pie either. My granddaughter has decided that we will have a cheese cake instead. She has also decided to make a maccaroni and cheese dish because her boyfriend will be here and it is hhis favorit. But I just might sneek in some sweet potatoes in the evening just for me. I like thembaked in the skin then remove from the skin and add real butter and salt and pepper. So good.

I usually cook yams. Sometimes from a can, sometimes fresh. But I don't think I will be doing that this year. My kids don't eat them and my husband doesn't care if we have them so I'll probably leave that out this year. When I do cook them, I like to cook them with a little brown sugar and some marshmallows on top.

It might be a Southern favorite, I honestly can't stand yams, especially sweet yams. I'm from the south and yams at Thanksgiving is a turn off for me. I like sweet potatoes cooked or baked like a regular potatoe. My mom always fixes it from a can if she's running low on time, and from scratch if she does. She will bake her's and then put marshmellow type covering with brown sugar over that. Everyone loves it, I'm just a odd ball for not liking a lot of things that you would normally eat in the south or on a farm.

I've never heard of them being a Southern dish...My Mom always fixed them as did her mom and her moms mom. After 3 generations of yams at Thanksgiving and Christmas, I carry on the tradition. I cook up the yams, then put them in a baking dish, sprinkle with butter, brown sugar and marshmallows and bake for a few minutes. The meals aren't complete without them. We have them each Thanksgiving. We have had both types at different times but to me it is much easier to use the can yams. Sometimes the are done in the oven and when not room in the oven they are done on the top of the stove. I put butter/margarine and brown sugar on them when I do the canned ones. When we have fresh ones they are just baked in the oven and if you want anything on yours when it is time to eat then you can put butter or whatever on them. Used to I didn't like them but my husband and oldest daughter did then one year I decided to taste them again after many years of turning up my nose to them and to my surprise I do like them now.

I do have yams for Thanksgiving dinner.. I use a huge can and normally just simmer them in brown sugar until the brown sugar has soaked through and through, then when the liquid has simmered down to nothing, I put them in a casserole dish and cover them with marshmallows and brown the marshmallows.. I also like to mash them in a skillet with a bit of butter and a lot of brown sugar, they taste so good this way.. I know the yams are good for you but I have my doubts about the brown sugar, oh well, I just don't really care, I like them this way anyhow.. ~~~Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone~~~

Hey chevee! I love yams! But I prefer them baked and not from the can. But lately the stores have not been getting any decent yams and I have not been able to pick out any that I felt were eatable. So I just decided to buy the canned yams. I will make them with a little brown sugar and marshmellows. I don't really like the canned yams, but my boyfriend wants them so I am going to make them for him. I will probably have a little bit to taste. We are going to have a typical Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings even though it is just the two of us.

My mother has been maiuing these for years. On the stove top from scratch with butter and brown sugar, and at the end sprinkles a few marshmallow on top. I use to love them when i was younger and would have seconds or thirds. Now that im older, they're just too rich for me. Still have some just not as much.
