Just can't put it down

What was the last book you read that you just couldn't put down? That you either read in one sitting or put it down because you had to but then finished it as soon as you could the next time you grabbed it? I'm asking because I haven't had that happen to me in so long. I want to read a book so good that I just let all things go while I'm lost in my book. What was it about your book that kept you gripped? Do you like books that keep you turning pages or would you prefer to take a little while to finish a book?

The last book was "The boy in Striped Pyjamas" by Irish writer John Boyne. It's about an unlikely friendship between a Polish Jewish boy in Auschwitz and the Camp Commandant's son. A very simple book, but quite powerful too. My all time favourite book is The Wind in the Willows. I will read that sometimes and go straight back to the beginning once I have finished it!

I LOVED, loved, loved "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas", p1ke. I thought the authors clever use of literary devices was one of the best elements of the story. (OutWith, Fury) And so respectful of him to use the naivitee' as a way to tell a difficult and over told tale. We all know how this story ends, yet I was gripped right to the end. A friend accused me of being so gripped, hoping for a happy ending. I knew better.

My favorite author is Mary Higgins Clark, so any of her books are hard to put down. I also like Dan Brown, James Patterson and several other authors who write mysteries and espionage. I am also a big fan of books about the supernatural, biographies and auto-biographies. I cannot say which books were hard for me to put down because, if a book grabs me after the first chapter, I will only put it down if I cannot keep my eyes open or have to do something else.

I love being so into a book that I read and read until I cannot keep my eyes open any longer.... more often I have to stop because I have something else to do.

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett was an incredible read. This book was hard to put down. I didn't read it in one sitting as there were about 1,000 pages to this book.

There are some books that I could read in one day or two. I try to pace myself with them though so I can savor what I am reading.

There have been two books lately that I have been unable to put down. They are both by the same author. One is called My Sister's Keeper and the other is called Nineteen Minutes. Both of these books are kind of long, but so very good. They also both have endings that you would never expect.

Hi, cortney09. I read My Sister's Keeper, liked it a lot. I've heard that Nineteen Minutes was really good too. I have many friends who read everything Jodi Picoult writes.

My dad sent me both of those books and he said he has read pretty much all of her books. The book Nineteen minutes does not end how I expected it two, but according to my dad, that's how her books are.

As far as I can remember the last book that I couldn't put down was a romance novel book. My mom even scolded me because I'm reading it until the morning the next day because the story was very beautiful and very touching. Godspeed...

Well, as they've learned that historical romances were good, and then suspence, now they do sf ones... don't think I could write one, just not too romantic.

My problem alas is I have a bad tendency to fall asleep now whenever I try to do some serious reading...(or am I being an idiot..LOL). I often read while stretched out in bed before going to sleep...often my one cat Pyewacket must think reading is boring and sits on my book, so then heaven forbid I disturb him. The very last book though that I did read practically non-stop was The DaVinci Code..must have read that book in record time..only two nights...don't ask what time I went to bed reading it.

Lol.... you an idiot? I must say if I lay down to read I am likely to fall asleep too. I do like to read in bead before sleeping but I must sit straight up and the light needs to be bright on my book. Otherwise I will wake up with a book on my chest having a dream about being trapped under a bookshelf or something crazy like that.

I think I can honestly say 'A Thousand Splendid Sons' by Khaleed Hooseni is a beautiful book of a small girl in Afghanistan married to a man old enough to be her father and all the sufferings. Its a must read book for it shows life in its real form in strict Muslim countries. It tears your heartstings and you dont want to stop reading it. Another of his book is the Kite Runner. I also enjoyed Prissoner of Birth by John Grisham, Loves to dance, loves to sing by Mary Higgens Clark and so many more. But do read the first one wi thout fail. This guy is amazing.

A book about two mice getting together and making house etc. Its a book I brought for my daughter for christmas, I'm going to read it to her, but it looked so good that I couldn't wait until christmas so i started to read it and I just couldn't put it down until I read all of it. It is a chapter book so it took me quite a while, I hadn't finished it by the time she came home from school so I had to hide it and wait until she had gone to bed to finish it.... it was a very long wait

I have just finished reading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. It is so suspenseful that i hate putting it down to stop reading and do my chores at home. But i also don't want to finish it soon because i want to really remember every single detail of the story. Finding who the killer was got me turning on the page continuously and i was so intrigued by the Illuminati. But when i realized that i am about to finish it, i stopped so that i could still enjoy reading it for a couple more days.

I'm working on the Harry Potter series (I got a really late start) and they are holding my attention pretty good. I want to finish this one to get to the next one but the only one so far that's kept me totally riveted was the Prisoner of Azkaban (which makes sense since it's been my favorite of the movies up to this point). Before that it was the Dresden Files. There are ten books so far and since I hate hard cover books (they're big and clumsy and hard to stretch out on the couch with...they're okay for text books but not pleasure reading) I have to wait until March to read the tenth and it's kind of making me crazy. All nine of the ones I've read, I've finished in between 3-5 hours, collectively because I sit at Starbucks for about a half an hour each week and read.

Hi, crimsonladybug. What a cute user name. Enjoy the Harry Potter series. I got a late start with it too. In fact, I still haven't read the last one. Thanks, I'll look into the Dresden Files series. I love sitting at Starbucks and reading a book too. I pamper myself once a week with some Starbucks free time.

Please do not laugh at me. My question is: does the Bible count as a Book on your list? You see once I got past Deuteronomy and started on Judges I could simply not put it down until I got to Job. It was fascinating and rolled along like any of the books you have mentioned here. It was full of romance, murder, action, suspense, drama, and all of the other things that any good book has. So does it count? BTW I have finished the whole thing a couple of times and there is even some pretty steamy love scenes in there.

Hi, cathyisgodschild. Welcome to myLot. I would never laugh at that question, it is a good one. The answer is, absolutely the Bible is a book on my list. It is facinating. Unfortunately, I can't read it like a page turner because there is too much referencing of other things I must do in order to understand most of it. But I long to understand it better. Thank you for participating in this discussion.

The section I was referring to reads very much like any other book except maybe the part of 1 & 2 Chronicles. Just start and you will soon find yourself lost in the world of Bible times. Before you begin pray God would give you understanding and enthusiasm for your reading. In no time you will have read much of the Old Testament which will give you courage and background information for your reading and study of the rest of the Bible. Much Love to you as you begin your journey through the greatest Book ever written. If you have questions just ask. PM me if you want or go to http://godschild.today.com Post your questions there if you like.

Stone Cold by David Baldacci. Most Baldacci books are hard to put down for me, but then I like a good detective/mystery story. I think my favorite by Baldacci is "The Winner".

If I have to make a list, it would be pretty long. Since I read about 2-4 books in a week, I usually have plenty of books that keep me gripped and pushed me to keep reading even if its way past midnight and I have to work the next day. I guess I could share the latest one that has captured my full attention, making me spend most of my day off reading instead of doing my chores. That would be Into the Storm by Suzanne Brockmann, Book 10 in this Troubleshooters/Seal Team 16 series. I just enjoy the way she writes, andshe captures males POV. Caught myself laughing quite hard in some parts, and the tension was gripping. It's a suspense/thriller romance novel. It was a great read.

I haven't read any books in a good while but, the last book I read was really good. It was called Sleeping With The Crawfish, I can't remember the authors name and I loaned it to my mother, sorry but, it was an awesome murder mystery. In this book it's the person you least wxpect, I thought I had figured out who the killer was but, I was so wrong!!!!

I can think of three books that have affected me like that. Bear in mind that I generally read a book in a day or at most two days, so to find a real page-turner is brilliant. I'll read anything, too, so I go through some real crap! The three books: firstly, Imajica (Clive Barker). I remember sitting up in bed at 3am with this one telling myself that "one more chapter won't hurt" and with my alarm set for 6:30am for work... Secondly, Whiteout (Ken Follett). Totally not my normal genre, but very, very well written and a really gripping story. Stolen viral agents, betrayals, annoying reporters, it has everything - even a cute puppy. Finally and most brilliantly, Lord Demon (Roger Zelazny & Jane Lindskold). Zelazny is, by far, my favourite author. I own every book he's written, except one. Lord Demon is wonderful: humorous, intriguing, beautiful and a stonker of an adventure.
