This trick saved my digital camera!

So I was trying to multi-task by hikings near a river and taking pictures at the same time. Well I dropped my camera in the water but quickly got it out. I thought my digital camera was ruined. But my friend gave me this tip: To put the camera in a plastic bag filled rice and let it sit overnight. I know it sounds crazy, but the camera was working the very next day! I just wanted to share this with everyone!

Well, you were lucky! I surprised my wife with new (second-hand) camera on a boat trip one day; she promptly dropped it into the water, where it floated for a moment or two, then slowly sank from sight! One week later, my insurance company replaced it with a brand new SLR. The moral of this story: don't hike with a camera unless you eat rice, and ;my insurance policy trumps your bag of rice.

Thanks for the information. I'll be sure to pass that info around too. It's good you had someone nearby who knew what to do to save the camera. So, three cheers for your friend too.

Can't really think of a reason why rice will help haha. Perhaps the rice absorb the water? Could it work on other things that can absorb water, such as (can't think of anything..)? I personally don't believe it. Perhaps the Mythbuster should try this out.

Thanks for a good tip. Some years ago, I accidentally dropped my cell phone into a sink full of water. I fished it out of the water, took the battery out and left it to dry on a radiator. After about 5 days I put the battery back in, turned it on, and it worked perfectly!

well that's nice to know. but whether your friend can tell if the same trick works when the camera is drowned in saline water? i am asking this because my camera slipped from my hand into sea and it's gone. gone means not gone in the sea but non functioning. also, if there is a time frame meaning do you have to keep the cam in the plastic bag with rice immediately or you can keep it later also to get the result.
