linux is freeware, requires less hardware resource then other os (windows based) and offers gui interface. most of softwares are avialable on linux and it is better to work on linux if you are good at command level configuration.

I did have a computer configured as a dual boot Windows/Linux machine. Unfortunately, I was never able to use Linux properly as my modem didn't work with Linux without additional software. So, it was boot machine in Windows, go on the net, read forums regarding it, download software, burn to CD, reboot in Linux, try to install software, then reboot in Windows when it didn't work correctly. Over and over again. Eventually, I gave up.

Try using Ubuntu 8.10. Just order a free CD on the Site. Try out the live CD OR Install it within Windows (Will slow down system). If u like it and ur hardware is working fine, install it.
I really don't need Linux but I like the Philosophy behind it.

I have used several different Linux distributions, of which my favourites were Mandriva and Ubuntu.
There are plenty of decent Linux distributions about and I would recommend trying a few to almost everyone. Nevertheless, I have always liked Windows and would not consider abandoning it altogether. I usually prefer to run a dual or multi boot system.
