Hi, There are a lot of photography contests on the internet. Do you join photography contests online? Have you won anything yet? I am new in photography and I never won anything from my photos.

I would love to start doing contests. I post on Deviantart and they offer contests all the time. I also plan on doing as many as I can when I start taking courses with the New York Institute of Photography.

I enter both photography contests online, as well as local photography contests. Different local photography groups and clubs host photography contests in the community. Different local magazines run photo contests. And the state fair has an annual photo contest. I've never won 1st place, but I have been a runner up several times. And most often I'm selected as a finalist, but I don't make it into the winner's circle. You just have to keep trying. When entering photo contests, it helps to know who the judge is or judges are. If you can find this information out ahead of time, research the judge the best you can. What kind of photography do they shoot? If they've judged other contests, what types of photos did they select as winners? Most judges have personal tastes that enter into their judging. I've worked with many judges that dislike photos of animals and won't select any animal photos to win no matter how good the photography. So the more you can learn about your judge before entering, the better. Also good general advice is to avoid common subject matter. Photographs of pets, sunsets and flowers are some of the most common photos entered in contests. (Of course that only applies to generic photo contests, if it's a themed photo contest you of course want to go with the theme!) The more unique your photo is, the more it will stand out amongst the other entries. Keep shooting and good luck with your photography!

You are right. If we can learn what type of photos the judges like, then the chances of winning will be higher.
