Why is music so bad these days?

It's been said many times, but it's getting worse no matter how much we talk about it -- more and more, the radio is playing useless drivel that has only come into existence because record labels want to make a quick buck.
Do any of you *actually like* that "kissed a girl" song? Come on, really?
Do people really want to hear recycled musical ideas, the same old formulaic hooks, the same passionless songs about kissing or heartbreak or sadness or worse?
What happened to music that moved people?
Is it hopeless?

Music reflects the current state of affairs. Look at the world around you, lyrics are pulled from it. For an example, think about it during the 60's and 70's music was revolutional, just like life was. In earlier years the songs were love songs, this was during a time when men actually courted women. People have lost that spark or zest for life, I mean life, not material objects. Morals and values have changed and thus it is reflected in what we see and hear.

Hi, welcome to mylot!
Somebody must like it, its flying off the shelfs. Radio plays what we request. Records only make it to number 1 because of sales and request. So granted those of us enough to know the difference may be complaining. But others are buying. Let's face it music or songs are not a necessity so somebody is buying it because they like it.

I stared a discussion like this once. I totally agree with you but it isn't that all the music sucks nowadays, it's what we are forced to hear on a daily basis that sucks. It has already been said here but the music industry is only pumping out commercial hits as it makes them money. At the end of the day they are only worried about returns. Good music will take a backseat to cash. Then our youth who are brought up listening to the garbage(excuse my french) simply repeat what they have learned, added on to our declining school systems, the result is what you see now.
Back when our music had meaning and had a message we also had meaning. Music is the soundtrack of our lives. You will remember a lot in your life by the music that was popular then. Think about an old song you liked and think about the first time you heard it. See? A memory right there!
Anyway not to plug myself but I do make music. I try to bring back some "realness" in what I produce. It's a damn shame you don't hear my music on the radio 24/7.

And who sings "Kissed a Girl?" Never heard of it. Then again I stopped turning the radio on some time ago.

Take That was on the Radio just then. Their new album is out soon and that will be good music to me. I cannot wait now and I am excited as their new songs sound excellent.
You are right what you say. Nothing was as good as years ago. Some of the music today is awful. Very few good songs are being made now. My daughter where running about singing "I kissed a girl" "I liked it". They thought it was great. What am I teaching these poor children but it is hard to cover their ears in the car when the radio is on.

Hello,Well, in some ways I agree and disagree. I think much of the music out there is pretty much all the same. There really is not much distinction between the messages and meaning of the songs. And, yes some have neither! But I think it depends on the type of music too. Some genres are known for not having much depth, and may be more popular because of the music or instrumentation. Then there are some types that are more popular because of the words and music. However, I think all music categories have the same characteristics. For example, rap music will keep sending messages about violence, gangs, murder, etc. Pop music will keep having female singers who really do not have that much singing talent sing about their boyfriends. And country music will keep singing about relationships breaking up. So, to answer the question "Why is music so bad these days?" I really don't think it has gotten any worse today than it has 5 and 10 years ago. As for me, I enjoy music that does appreciate the art like jazz, ryhthm and blues, and classical. With these types of music you really can't find any that is bad!

welcome to mylot and i'm looking forward to read your thoughts here.
as for your discussion, i think there are a lot of good music out there but these bands/artists aren't getting the props they need simply because market dictates the release of more pop-oriented music. not pop music but popular music that can be tiring and dreary at times.
if you really want to listen to something new, you can check the internet for some underground bands and labels and i'm sure you'll find some music to your liking.
cheers!!!

Well, I find a lot of good music that inspires me. Maybe you are listening to the wrong stations?!!! LOL
A lot of the great music of yesterday was looked upon as garbage by the generation before.
Big Band music was evil, Rock and Roll was evil, and the list goes on.
I tend to fall back on songs I grew up with but also, being a dance teacher, I am open to listening to all music and have been surprised by some songs that I have found in different music genres.
It is all in the "ears" of the beholder!! LOL
Oh, and I can name some oldies that were useless drivel, too.

Its the trend and what people like the most is causing the song nowadays is really terrible. Back then its only serve the purpose to sings and the love of the art itself bu today its the dollars and cent attitude. They just don't care whether the song has quality or the lyric is stupid. For them only if it sells than it consider a good song. These days the really good song is obviously been neglected. We had seen countless talented artist had to move on cause their arts is not commercial enough. Today anybody can make an album even the person only knows just three or four chord and be rich and famous in no time while others that really talented and gifted suffers the outcome. How sad is that..

i think music is catered for the generation it aims to capture. so in a sense, it does tell us about what kind of generation we are living in now. one where majority of youths/people like to listen to shallow songs about love, making love, heartbreaks and all those you mentioned

I don't like that type of music and I'm a teenager growing up liking 80's music and rock and what-not.
Most of the time when you bring up that you listen to the Beatles or The Eagles people just look at you weird and ask "What's that?" It's actually not the Kids' fault about what they listen to, it's what the radio and media is telling them, and they just follow blindly to fit in. Sometimes it is the Parents' fault, because some parents don't expose their kids to music they liked when they were little. Which My father did with me, and I guess i kind of learned hey! this music is great.
So as I said before. Most of the time they listen to that music just to fit in.(:

it is really sad that the music now a days is not going in correct spirit and the so called modern music is driving the human society in the wrong taste and ultimately is a cause of concern as far as the human values are concerned beacuse music is concerned as a inspiration for leading a good life.

the sad thing about the whole matter is music has been our very existence since the dawn of time and will be for centuries to come and that in itself can be good or bad but who knows

Well firstly that depends on what you deem to be bad music. What you think is bad obviously the younger generation seems to think is good. I do understand what you mean though about 'useless drivel', i feel that way sometimes but you just have to make the best of what you have and there is good music out there. I'm not a fan of Katy Perry's song I Kissed A Girl but the rest of her album is pretty ok and it is rather reminiscent of relationships; her album holds truths. What do you think is good music though?

unfortunetly, modern music has only one factor:the price tag.
take a look at any chart- wall to wall remixes and cover versions. anythingh new is considered a risk by the music industry-consequently they remove the risk by producing only the music they will sell.the US music industry is the worst-totally dominated by money men; the british music scene is slightly better with a few more 'indy' acts, but is certainly tarred with the same brush thanks to money obsessed garbage-merchants like simon cowell.
the solution? more live bands, more courage from the music industry, better producers and a huge dose of creative integrity.fat chance.
