I was on the yahoo site about to log in and check my email when I saw the following headline "Worlds oldest person dies".It was about Edna Parker,a resident of Indiana's Morgan County who was recognised by the Guiness Book of records as the worlds oldest person at a age of get this 115 years. Now this got me thinking what a blessing it is to live for such a long time but then I remembered numerous conversation about death that I had with my friends, many of whom said they wouldnt want to live that long. These persons maintain that they would get tired of living for such a long time. Some also contend that they would only want to live so long if they were in good health. How long would you want to live for and why ?

This is a good discussion I think living for a long time would be nice if you had family and friends around you the trouble is you would have probably seen your kids out ,brothers ,sister ,cousins if they had all had families and knew where you were and come and visit you then that would be nice,I worked in an old people home and beleave me you would not want to live forever if you saw the shoddy way their families used to treat them. They would turn up if they wanted a new car or an extension to their house ,the person would get all excited they could help them then once the money was in their bank account they would go and not come back ,not all the relatives were like that they would turn up and take auntie out once a week , or take their aged parents into town and buy them clothes and a meal ect.It is a difficult one as you never know what quality of life you would have and how many of your nearest and dearest were still alive, nobody really wants to die ,I honestly don't know for once you have stumped me.xx

Hi ronnyb, I would like to live as long as i am able and can still do everything that i like to do like walking with my own feet, i can eat alone, think like an adult person. Can still work in the house, in short if i am still physically fit. As we all know that when we get older we become more weak and weaker and we begin to have a lots of illness. If i am no longer fit anymore, i would rather join the creator in heaven than let other people suffer because of me.

I wouldn't really like to even be like in my 50s or my 60s because I'm young and already my body hurts me enough. I also just like being a kid and you can just tell that being younger was always the best part of most peoples lives. Right now I'm in contact with all my best friends on a daily basis and I don't know how things could be any better. As you get older friends tend to fall off the map and you wonder what happened to them.

I started a similar topic, http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1799859.aspx. As I stated there, once I have to be taken care of and lose my independence and ability to be productive, I do not want to be around. I also do not want to outlive my only remaining child and my granddaughter, or other grandchildren that I might have. I lived through my son's passing, but do not want to do that again, even if my child is 100.

hey, yeah i have read it an hour ago i guess... gosh i'm so impressed by this grandma who was able to live longer with a clear mind and healthy body..i wish if my mind would be clear from worries and thinking about what to do next, or about boyfriend, and whatsoever...as there are lots of things in my mind i have to think about; my study and my work, my guy, siblings, friends, and etc i wish if my mind keeps calm and only focus on whatever i'm doing like this grandma... smiley,

How on earth do you become tired of living? I think that expression is from people in poor health and pain who get ground down with an illness. If you were in reasonably good health and could do most of the day to day activities and some things you enjoy why would you be tired of that. I would like to live as long as I am in reasonable health and mobility and with a modest amount of wealth so I am not freezing in a cold basement apartment eating dog food.

For me this is easy. I want to live until living with dignity is no longer possible. I love life, and more importantly, I love MY life, but the moment I become a burden because of health issues, I think I wouldn't want to continue. Like Dr. House said: "There's no such thing as dying with dignity, you can only live with it". Rich

If I were in good health and could think clearly, maybe I want to live that long. But a problem will probably appear if I live that long. That is friends and families may die earlier than me.If that happens, how sad and lonely will I be!

I wanted to live to be a hundred or over but I would like to be vital and energetic at that age. I would also like to have my wits about and be the smartest man on the planet. Cheers!!

I saw this. I thought it was amazing. I would like to live a long while, as long as I am healthy and able to think clearly. I don't have an exact age in mind. But I would like to see my grandchildren, and what type of people they may be.

I wouldn't want to live longer than 75 to be honest. The world doesn't seem to be getting any better as the years go by, just harder to survive in, and I really only want to live a normal lengthed life and then have it end peacefully. I definitely don't want to live into my nineties or hundreds.

This is a great question and a topic that I have also spoken to friends about on numerous occasions. On the one-hand, I always feel that I want the people I love e.g parents, older relatives to be around me for as long as possible, no matter how old they get. But on the other hand I do wonder how old I would want to be before passing away...I think it depends not only on good health (although this is probably most important) but also on who you have around you and therefore who you almost want to 'live for'.

I would honestly want to live one day less than my future husband. He is my life and my everything. Life without him is truly unimaginable. That being said I would never want to live without him. Then again I wouldn't want him to have to endure life without me. So perhaps if we go down like Bonni and Clyde that would be cool :) In all honesty anything past 100 is too much for me. Everyone you've known at that point has pretty much passed away friends, parents siblings, etc. 100 seems like a good age. you never know though as each century passes we all seem to be living longer and longer and 50 is becoming younger and younger. So who knows we'll have to wait and see :)

I agree with the "good health" argument. If I stay healthy until 115 years old, I would choose to live that long. But if I became ill and in chronic pain, I don't know if I would want to live to be very old. 90 sounds like a good round number to live to. I would like to live to be 90. Also, if there was some reason for me to live to be as old as I can possibly be, then that would be fine, too. For example, maybe when I'm 95 I'm supposed to write a best-selling novel that changes the way the world thinks. Then fine, I'll live to be that old. This is a really interesting topic and very thought provoking. Thanks for putting this out there.
