We are all talking about giving at this time of year. We , of course are talking first about giving gifts to our family and friends. Some of us are also talking about giving to charities during this season.
If you had a large sum of money to give to a charity, which charity would you choose and why? Would it go to an organization? Or simply to a person or family that you know? Why is this charity important to you?

I also believe in giving to a church or rescue mission. Helping women in a shelter is also a good idea along with the idea I have of St. Jude's Hospital. These people really need to be remembered all year long and not just the holidays.
I like to think that someone would help me and my family in a time of need and actually that has happened before when someone helped me and I appreciate it sincerely.

I would split it between The American Cancer Society and The Make A Wish Foundation. Those two hit home with me because I lost my seven year old nephew to cancer five years ago. I would also give to a womens shelter who battles domestic violence.

This discussion is a good one..
But I wouldn't give my money to a charity for the charity to get the good name and me go unrecognized. About 7 or so years ago I was watching a Oprah show and she was going to Africa to give the kids over there a pair of shoes, the looks on those kids face made me cry, they were so happy to have a pair of shoes, they were around 7 or 8 years old and had never had even a pair of socks. Every since then I have said I'm making it my life's goal to get as much money as possible so I can go over to Africa to help those people out. It always seems to amaze me how selfish people can be. Another thing is when I go into those cities with the homeless and one comes up to me asking for money, I wouldn't give it to them, instead I'd take them to a restraunt tell them to pig out, then work our way to the store to buy food and some warm close.
So many people need help and I really want to help them, but I'd want to be there to experience the joy that they have from what I can give to them.

Why wouldn't it be? I mean if I'm the one working hard to help them out I think the least I would deserve would be to see the joy that I brought. It's kinda like the whole idea of giving someone a gift, don't you put who its from on the tags?.
Besides, not always is the donated money going just to the charity's cause, there are alot of places that take fees from each amount.
I just don't see a point in just giving, there is so much more to being involved in, wouldn't you want to meet the people your helping out, get to know them a little? I sure would...

You could still do that without the need for recognition. Are you helping or making a name for yourself? There is no fame for a charity. They are organizations that get the job done. Some of course are better at it than others.
No. There is nothing wrong with getting to know the people you help. But are you doing it to look good? Or to help the people? True giving comes from the heart and not from a big head.

I would give the money to our local church mission fund. From there the monies would be used around the world starting right in our own community. The mission field starts in our own back yards. In our own community just a short time a go we had 1,000 family's using the food bank a month. We now have 25,000 people using the local food bank. Our church has missionaries and mission projects around the world and is well known in our community for missions projects.

any money that i woudl ever give to a charity would be the animal rescue centers... and the people who are maybe a small time foundation in each and every area taking care of homeless, abandoned animals. just today i visited our local animal shelter called blue cross and i havent been there for a pretty long time and there have been some new comers from the time i last visited them...and i was amazed to see that some dogs were of such good breed and so healthy but the owners just dint want them anymore so they left them ou ton the streets from them to take care of themselves... what a sad situation this is!!

I would give to the food banks. I think no matter what people need food. I would just give give tons of food. I also would suport the hospice, because I shop at a thrift store that donates all its money to them. I would also support the shelters and food and shelter would be the first two main ones. I can think of a long list after that.

If I have a large sum of money I would probably give it to a charity foundation dedicated to educating children who can't afford to go to school. Education unfortunately is deprived among a lot of Filipino children. Good education for children can help solve poverty problems in the future.
If I have more and more money, I will definitely help my relatives who are in need of food (mainly).

Hi There. Nice Question! I would definitely give it to "home of the aged" organization or charity who takes care of old people from the street or if they don't have a family to go home too... My other option is, to donate a large sum of money to an organization on where it focuses on child care services...
I guess the importance of it is to make them happy even if their family is gone or left them... As for me, I can't imagine myself living in a shelter home without my family to visit me or so... For the children, I want to give them hope that they can still be successful in life. That there are still good peeps out there.. :) Cheers!

I think I'll give to a charity that helps abused animals, environmental charities and abused children. I think each living thing is important and certain care is needed to those which are helpless in life.

I donate to the Veterans because in my opinion our guys that went to vietnam were not treated to nicely when they came back. Knights of Columbus because my grandfathers were Knights of Columbus & the Catholic church does not turn anyone away unlike your big "born again" churches, St Vincent de Paul Society which is another Catholic charity. I am a catholic & I have gotten help from the Catholic church. March of Dimes and American Heart Association. My youngest daughter was born with heart disease. Those are the ones closest to my heart

Hi Rocket,
I think - no - I am sure that I would give everything I could to a charity called "Widow's Mite'. I've been involved in the charity for over fic years now. We were given a house in the remorte country are to house 30 physically and mentally challenged children.
The caregivers were angels as the house had no running water and most of these children were vomiting aand had diarrhoea etc. It was a nightmare. We first fund raised to get running water into the house and then were able to get someone to donate two washers and dryers. They were in heaven!
The house lives on charity. In another words, my church is responsible for getting food for them to eat and sometimes this is very hard. We have become very good at begging. We get donations and we get free health care for the children but goof food is the biggest problem. It is much worse for these children as they do not understand why they are hungry. We visit quite regularly - take it in turns as it is so far awy - and when we visit we beg protein - eggs or chicken for the children. We have lost three babies during the five years or so. These children are so happy with so little. They may be short of food sometimes but not short of love. Blessings

I read your response to my 14 year old son. He has a big heart for hurting people and we do not have such visible great needs as this in the US! I think it's my responsibility as a parent to let my children see how blessed we are in comparison and how accountable we are to use our blessings to help others. Thank you for your response:)

I would just love to help crippled children, ALS, Huntingtons and the SPCA animal shelter. Those are the ones I would definately help if I ever won the lottery.

if i have a large sum of money, i'll give all to a no-kill shelter. i love animals and it pains me to see them killed just because. my country isn't exactly very tolerant towards animals. our town council send in the pest control whenever someone complains about stray animal, be it a dog or a cat. furthermore, the SPCA in my country is not a no-kill shelter. if a dog is not adopted for more than two weeks, it will be put to sleep. it's really sad to think about all those lives lost.

I am a fan of most cancer research organizations. I would absolutely give money to St Judes Children's Hospital if I had it. And of course Parkinson's and Research for Heart Disease. I have a large family and there are many I know and love who have been affected by diseases. I also would give to women's shelters and anywhere that really helps people in real need of help! I probably wouldn't have a lot of money for long, because I love giving and helping!

I would give it to children with disabled parents or to cancer research.
I know a lot of children whos parents are sick and disabled and those children care and look after their parents and their Christmas will be hard and poor for them.
I would give to cancer reasearch for families to have a good time at Christmas as it is hard for them also.

Evey time I walked on the street, I always encounter these small children who are homeless and always starving for food. I feel sad for them so if ever I have the money, I will send it to a homeless child care organization like "Bantay Bata" in our country.
