Bicycle Lanes

I really admire people bicycling along the main streets in Metro Manila and other cities. But I also fear for their lives. Just one small swipe, and they end up on the road, or worse.
I see special lanes designated for cyclists. But still these lanes are still within or crisscrossing streets heavy with motorized vehicular traffic. Are there countries in the world which have achieved segregation for bicycles or, much better, have made the bicycle the centerpiece of their transportation system?

Good morning, bantilesroger. I am from China, which is the largest country with numerous bikes running back and forth on the street, where bike lanes are provided for the bike-riders for their safety. I am also a bike-rider and I love to ride my own bike for its convenience to go shopping in the downtown and bike-riding in the countryside. On the streets of the cities, there are always bike lanes for bike-riders. But I don't like it when there are more and more cars running on the street, polluting our air and making the traffic more crowded. Thank you for being my friend. It is Christmas Eve today. Happy Christmas Eve and Merry Christmas. Cheers!

They are a nuisance on the roads , they never stop at junctions or traffic lights or pedestrian crossings. they pull out and cut you off when ever they feel like it and completely abuse the rules and laws of the roads.... so what do we do to stop them or help them, we spend a lot of money and investments in creating safe cycle routes either marked on the road or on the pavements to ensure they are safe.. and the thanks we get for doing that is that they ignore the cycle lanes and carry on as i described earlier. so my opinion is do not let your government waste money or effort on people who completely disregard the laws of the roads and who think they have a god given right to do and go where they please ... this is not only a problem in London, i have family all over the world and the same thing happens .....

Hahahah... the way you describe the bicyclists. Your comments are somewhat jolting. Attention, bicyclists in myLot, defend yourselves... hahahah...
They way I look at it, it would verge on the unfair if we would generalize. While it could be true that some cyclists may every now and then forget road courtesy and discipline, the majority can really be described as knights and gentlewo/men on the road.
It is also possible that motorists have some rough types. Hence, road courtesy and discipline should be inculcated on all: motorists, cyclists, as well as pedestrians.
In any case, to my mind, an effective system of separation between cyclists and motorists has to be put in place for the safety of both. How? I don't know, but I feel it's necessary.

I live in the United States and they have designated areas for bikeriders. I have watched these places and they are very safe. A person has to be careful no matter whether you are on a bike, walking or in a car.
