I'm wondering how often you need to upgrade your computers, and if the amount of time has changed over time.
I know for a while there to keep up with a computer you could use with modern software you needed to buy a new one about every 2 years. Now it seems to have slowed down a bit, and while there are great new things coming out all the time I really don't think I need to make computer purchases more than every 4 years. How about you?

I changed my personal computers every few years. My first computer was bought in 1996. It was bought so that I got the exposure to computer before I resume my tertiary education. The second computer were bought in 1996, because I need a computer for assignment in my hostel. The third one was bought in 1998, and it's for my thesis multi-cast video streaming research, because I need two computers to be connected as the servers and clients. In 2001, I got my first laptop from my first company for work purpose. My fourth and fifth computer were bought in 2003. They were bought for my gaming needs during my company relocation trips abroad. In 2006, I got my second laptop from my second company. Now, I only use the company laptop, and thus do not have to worry about upgrading the hardware or software. It's taken care by the chartered I.T. team.

hmm, i bought my first computer last year. that took me twenty-nine years and i haven't done any upgrading yet. i hope i won't have to, and i probably won't because my needs are very basic, just using the internet and Word, for the most part.
