If any of your particular dress gets slightly torn or damaged, do you continue to wear it or discard it. Some of the outfits are our favourites and sometimes we continue to wear those outfits, even if they get slightly damaged or torn. What do you do in such a situation? Do you continue to wear it, because you very much like it and you think that no body is seriously going to notice the defect in your outfit or your remain conscious and discard those damaged outfits, thinking that somebody may point out the same and you may feel ackward. Please share what do you actually do on this issue.

It is very simple deepak.....if clothes are still in better condition and can be used after slight repairing by stitching at home or by tailor outside, they can be used for some more time...., but if the conditions is so bad that no repairing can bring them back to same original form, then either we can use them at home, or exchange some utensils for clothes ( you know those ladies who come in the afternoons to exchange clothes with utensils......), or give them away , or finally through them or use them in the kitchen..... like most middle class housewives.....

Yes, you are quite right that slightly damaged clothes could be used at home or if the tear is not visible, it could be used outside also. Yes, what a great idea to exchange old and torn clothes with utensils. Is it possible at your place too?
What do you do yourslef, do you continue to wear slightly torn or damaged clothes?
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Dpk, I have two items of clothing with slight tears and I do still wear both of them. One is a pair of jeans that have worn by the knee area, easy one to get away with and altjough I only wear around the house they are comfortable and still look ok and the other is a skirt where my heel got caught in at the bottom near the hem. I am aware there is a little tear there but it is not at all noticable and I do still wear it out. If it was obvious thoug I would put into recyling or maybe shorten the skirt. Huggles. Ellie :D

So you wear the slightly torn clothes at home, it is understandable. Sometimes, we do not feel like discarding some of our favourite outfits, even if slightly damanged. Thanks for sharing. Warm Hugs!!!

Well if it’s a minor tear, I am going to mend it as best as I can. This happened to me during the last Durga Pujas. Late at night we were returning home after a lot of revelry and while getting down from the cab, my new kurta got stuck and before I could understand, one tug and phrrrrrrr…OMG that very sound told me that I had torn my kurta. What could I do Deepak, I could not possible throw it away. So I repaired it as best as I could and thought its not the same as being new, I do wear it.

Sudipta, You are right now a days, in the normal course, quality clothes do not get torn, but it may happen sometimes accidently, as happened with you. Same sort of incident happend with me too, while travelling in bus for a short distance, one of my new shirts got torn due to some iron nails on the seat, it was a favourite shirt and it got damaged on the front side, I really felt very bad about it and even after getting it mended, I did not feel very comfortable wearing it, as I knew that others might notice the fault in the new shirt. I endorse your views that for you it was not possible to throw away your new Kurta and you did the right thing be mending it. I somehow feel that if we like some particular outfit, we do not feel like discarding it, we love wearing it, to the extent possible, even it is older and slightly damaged. Many thanks for enriching the discussion.

I will still wear it after fixing it.If the clothes is my favorite especially if it is comfortable to wear I don't mind if it's torn and old.It is not that I don't have money to buy clothes it's just I'm not very happy to wear new clothes. But I do give away clothes sometimes from my children's outgrown clothes.I'm a person who is not very particular of how I look in my outfit because I don't socialise often. But I can wear damaged outfit ,but will not make me the center of attention in an ocassion.

I am one of those people that will hold on to casual clothing like t-shirts and shorts and things until they are practically rags! lol. I don't wear these clothes out though and will only have them on around the home. I like to think of it as me doing my bit to save the pant or something!

If you wear slightly damaged clothes, it means that you do not bother, what othes might say about it. Wearing slightly damaged or torn clothes at home is OK and that could be understood. I somehow feel that if we like some particular outfit, we do not feel like discarding it, we love wearing it, to the extent possible, even it is older and slightly damaged. Many thanks for enriching the discussion.

Hello dpk262006,
I usually repair them first before wearing it again, unless the torn just happened. It os still a good dress and if the thing can be repair, I will still wear it. It will be a unique dress because for sure you won't have somebody wearing the same kinds of clothes with the same kind of damage you have. But there are some limit to wearing it and it's better if you just used it at home.
Regards.

Hi dpk,
It is not at all good to wear a torn/damaged cloth when you are going to office or outside home just for the reason; it is a favourite one. Our cloths will say about our personality so it is not advisable to wear a torn or damaged cloth when you are in the midst of public. If the particular dress is that much favourite we can keep the same with us instead of discarding it. There is another option, use the same at home.
I agree with you one of your option, if the damage is not so noticeable then can a try.
What about you?

You have given the reply, which I was looking for, honestly speaking. It is very true that condition of our clohtes/outfits speaks lot about our nature and personality and it is not advisable to wear even a slightly torn cloth, outside your home or say in office.
I feel very conscious, if I am required to wear even a slightly damaged or torn cloth in office or at a public place, I keep thinking that others might not see it, since I know about the defect, I feel uncomfortable wearing it and normally avoid using the damaged outfit, I may use the same at home, when no visitor is expected....LOL!

I would not wear the torn or damaged dress to work but I do not throw away my favourite outfits till it really unusable. If the damage/tear is not very visible I may use it at home on a holiday or just do go down to the market. Sometimes some clothes have got some memories behind it and that is why they are kept even though they are unusable.

If the damage is to a seam or somewhere reparable I repair the clothing and continue to wear it. If its something like a pair of jeans/pants and the butt of the pants ripped out i dont wear them anymore but I use them for quilting or other sewing projects.

Hi Dpk....Well I dont like walking around wearing torn clothes, however dear they are to me.....Normally my clothes dont get torn due to constant using, but mostly due to constant misusing by me.....
I am a bit clumsy when I wear sarees, and tend to step on the pleats and tear them, because I am a fast walker, and sometimes my palluv may pull on something, and causing a tear on that part where I keep it pinned....If it is a small tear I mend it up but if it is noticable, then that saree remains in the bottom of my cupboard.
Even my salwar kameez do not get spared from my "man handling"..I have damaged two or three of them by ironing carelessly, and then I discard them........

You are right now a days quality clothes do not get torn in the normal course, till some mishap takes place. I can understand how you land in trouble when your are wearing Sari and you are in a hurry. Only thing is that teared portion should not be visible, then you can wear the outfit again. I also somehow feel that if we like some particular outfit, we do not feel like discarding it, we love wearing it, to the extent possible, even it is older and slightly damaged. Many thanks for enriching the discussion.

My clothes get hardly torn. They get dull, lustre less and old but not torn. I donot wear torn clothes. Either mend it or keep it aside. If it's my favorite, I would fix it and wear it no matter what. It's feels great to wear old, soft clothes when at home, specially during summers here. My mom wears Saree and guess what she loves all those softie, cotton muslins during sultry months. I love hugging her with those on. Nothing like the feel of old, warm clothes.

Hello dpk. I used to have a favorite coat that got caught by the handle of a door and a hole was made that I felt so upset for it. Yet, I did not want to leave it in the corner and I managed to fix it by myself and still wore it until it was very old. Now I still have it in the wardrobe, but I wear it only home as it has faded on the back part, namely on the shoulder because of airing in the sun when washed and exposed too much to the sun.
Well, I have another one, which is a leather one, but the back part is somewhat a little peeling. It cannot be fixed, so I don't wear it and have not dealt with it. I plan to give it to someone doing physical work and someone who doesn't care much about the little defect.
Thank you so much for the discussion.

So you do not wear your torn coat at public places, that is a good idea. I agree and it is understood that slightly torn or damaged clothes could be worn at home and should not be discarded. Many thanks for sharing and joining us.

that is one thing I would not want to happen...for my favorite dress to torn or damage. Actually that happened twice to me. Those clothes were so nice and were expensive actually and they really look so nice on me but unfortunately they were damaged when I was pressing them. My goodness, I could not really forgive myself for what I did. I was so sad! I could not wear them anymore because the damage was very obvious and beyond repair. So I just threw them away. If the tear could be repaired then I could always wear but if not and I would look miserable then I'd rather discard.

It means that if you love a particular dress, you take adequate precautions so as to safeguard its upkeep, it is good on your part. Sorry to hear that one fine day your favourite outfit got damaged accidently. Apparently, you had no option but to discard it. Hopefully, that incident would have given a lesson to you.
Many thanks for joining and sharing.

if it's my favorite outfit then i'd do something to fix it.. i have a glue like tool that is made to fix slightly torn clothes.. if i don't have time to sew my clothes then i use it as an alternative solution.. it's effective and i highly recommend it to people who don't have time to do sewing stuff..
