When do you select the best answer?

I have only been here for a few days and was wondering when would be the appropriate time to select best answer to my discussions. Do you wait for a certain amount of time or just pick one when you see a good answer?
I have noticed some discussions that are only one days old with only one or two replies that already have a best answer chosen. My guess is that those are people who are in a friends network and give best answers only to their friends, no matter what their answer is.
I was hoping to get more responses to my questions before I give best answer. Please look at some of my other discussions and reply to them. Everyone gets a + for their reply and comments.

A very good question.
I tend to wait for a while to see what responses I receive. as for the period of time, there is no set value that I use. The post usually gets responses shortly after posting and soon slows down to a stop, so at that point I shall choose a best reply. I do give + marks whenever a good response is posted.
I understand what you are saying because I have answered questions that have been weeks old, and any postings that I respond to more than a day or so old tend to have already been selected for best response.
I guess that this is the kind of thing that we will learn with experience.

Yes, we are always learning, even on here. I noticed that when one person replies to a post, even though it's a few days old, other answers pop in within minutes. I think the discussion appears back on the top of the list when it's replied to. I noticed that when I thought I was going back to the most recent discussions and they were a few weeks old and I kept getting the same results there. Usually I go to the discussions with no replies when I'm killing time and pick out something there to reply to and notice that they usually get more replies from others in a few minutes.
Hint: Go to my old discussions and reply to the ones with no replies :)

The answer which makes you "realise something" or make you "visualise something" would be a best answer..

I think choose the best as it arrives...because the next reponse may be inluenced by the previous ones..

I, too, wait until I gather more responses before giving out best response. I truly want to reward the person who gives me what I think is the best answer. Besides, someone pointed out to me that if you give the best response right away, some people won't respond because they already know they won't get it.

Yes, those who are only one here to make money are not very likely to answer posts that already have best answer decided. Which shouldn't make much difference to them though as they are not likely to get best answer if they don't have anything meaningful to say. Thank you for your reply.

if only 1 or 2 reply then I pick one in the first few days, if many are replying then I'll wait a week to see how many reply and then pick one

I haven't been here long but I have noticed that when someone replies to an old question it comes "alive" again so there could still be some more answers. I might select a best answer sooner if there is a really good answer that answers my question but if there are no informative answers, I'll wait a while.
