For the past month we have been short handed at work so we have had to work six days a week. I usually have between 50-60 hours every week so I am working a lot of overtime. My problem is they have not even tried to find someone to hire so that we can start the training process which takes several weeks before the can be left on there own. I am getting tired of having only one day off to get the things done that I need to and I am working a lot of hours during the day so when I get home I am so tired I just want to relax. If they were to hire someone Monday than we would be working like this till at least the middle of January. Any suggestions on how to make a boss do their job instead of playing around and not helping any of ud?

If it is possible to maybe talk to the owner maybe that would help, Other than that maybe you can tell your boss that it is nice to have the hours but you would really like some time off every now and then and let her know that you are concerned with the fact that she has not hired anyone. Kindly tell her that you have children and a life that you need to tend to as well. If not then maybe you will need to tell her that you will find another job which would leave her in a worse position then she is already in. I have no idea other than that, I do not know your boss, but it seems that you may need to go ove rher head to the boss so maybe they could light a fire under her but to hire someone. Hopefully this helps some.

Thanks for your comment. I hope that something is done about it soon before we all start going crazy.

In UK, we have laws against forcing people to work more than 48 hours per week - it has to be by agreement (except for certain specific occupations like junior doctors). Also we have laws to enforce a certain amount of rest time between shifts for people who work consecutive days like you are.
Outside UK, it is possible that you are being exploited. You have the usual choices - grin and bear it, complain and risk losing your job, try and negotiate a reduction in hours, take some time off sick or holidays, or quit!
Best of luck and let us know how you get on! At least you have a job during this down-turn!

That is why I have not left my job. With the economy the way it is there is no way to know if you can get another good job and if you do how long it will last. At my job I have some seniority so I don't have to fear as much about losing my job. With so many layoffs going on it is a scary time to make a career move so I am trying to wait it out. Hopefully all goes well.

HI alyssakenzie. What does your job consist of? I hope that your company hires someone else so that you can rest a bit and work normal hours. Try to rest as much as possible on Sundays. Did you talk to your boss about this situation?

I think maybe they won't hire someone because they have you to work all the extra hours.
