I am originally from Cornwall, England but now I live in Devon just a few hours from my hometown. I really miss being so close to the beach, going for a long winters walk by the sea listening to the waves and sitting down looking out to see and daydreaming. I also miss pasties! Whenever my mum comes to visit she always brings me a few so I can put some in the freezer for a later date. I also make sure I visit the local bakery and getting my fill of them before I have to go back home.
How about you? What do you miss about your hometown if you no longer live there?

I do not miss my home town but my family is all still there and I do miss my family but I cannot afford to go visit them as they are so far away. My brother has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer and it would be nice to be able to pop in for a chat and just connect.

Hi there sharra1
I am sorry to hear about your brother it must be so difficult for you living so far. My brother's wife gave birth to their first son just over a month ago but they are in Kuwait and the rest of the family are in the UK but we have skype that we use to keep in touch with each other. I wish your brother a speedy recovery!
Thanks for your response

Hi! I was born in the United States, but my relitives came over here through Ellis Island from Cornwall England. I have been to Cornwall twice in my life and I love it! I love the fishing boats, the quaint little shops and pubs, the coble stone streets, all the fat, healthy cats, the fish & chips in cones, the scones and pastries, cream soups, rock buns, saffron buns, mutton stew etc.. I loved walking out to the little island (when the tide is right) and even those very noisy seagulls! I felt like it was my home even though I was born in America. I guess the old saying is true: You can take the girl out of Cornwall, but you can't take Cornwall out of the girl!

Ah those delicious pasties! Send me a beef one will ya?!! Ha Ha Ha!! You're right, it wouldn't make it here in one piece even though they are still delicious (day old)! When we got there, (me and my sister), we stayed with reletives in their tiny apartment not far from the beach and you are right again, that little island was called: St. Michael's Mount! Wish I was there now, even though it'll be very chilly and cold, I wouldn't care! Bring on the pasties and ale!

Hi ya xbrendax
Wow what a small world. You are talking about all the things I take for granted down there. Where abouts did you go when you visited? I think the island you are talking about that you can walk to when the tide is out is St Michael's Mount and funnily enough I took my kids there the last time we were down in Cornwall which was October. I am looking forward to going to Cornwall for the New Year and I'll be able to catch up with my friends. I would offer to send you a pasty but I don't think it would make to you in one piece! LOL
Thanks for your response

Well, let's see. I miss the rain and the miserably cold winter days, and the summers which are so hot you can't move between sunup and sundown. And I miss the noise of the traffic and the billowing clouds of car exhausts. And I miss the streets you can't walk down at night for fear of being beaten up or killed. I miss the crowded city streets and the ancient trams and buses, and the traffic flow which would run second to a snail at some times in the day.
Not much, really.

Well, maybe it is the people and the food that attract me much if I move to another place. The people there are very friendly and food is so delicious and snacks are so particular that you may not find them easily in other cities. And if I no longer live there,I may be sad for a while because it is the place I was born and grow up.I think I will forget my hometown wherever I live in in the future.I have to face the fact that after my graduation,I maybe live in the city I work which is far from my hometown. But I cannot tell at this time.

I live in 5 minutes drive by car away from my hometown. I do miss my teenage friends. Some of the grew up and still live in the same area. I miss bumping into them on Sunday's when we go to the mass or buy the newspaper. However as it is a 5 mins drive it is not really far away from my hometown.

Bet you miss the hunky cornish men to!!!! Ya i guess as you get older and in more of a routine with families and work you miss all those freedoms you had as a child. I miss those summer holidays when you would get up and go out cycling and exploring the local area for the day just popping in for dinner and then clearing off out again until tea. Amazing how times have changed now youd be afraid to let children out of you sight for more than 20 mins.

I have to say you are better than me. I am a college student living far away from my home town.It is the second year i leave my hometown.I can go home when we have holiday which we call summer holiday and winter holiday.I have to take train which will spend me two whole days.It is really not a good experience for me.I have to change my train and take buses, what is worse,i have a bus sick which will make me throw up.And i don't have too much money.ahah,i really miss everything in my hometown, the snakes, the air,the friend, and my dear families. It is said tho moon is rounder in hometown than in other place.I miss it no matter where i am.

I miss my young friends.
I left my hometown 20 years ago.
I have lost contact with them.
I don't know if we can recognize each other when we see again.

May I be as bold as to ask what part of Cornwall you resided in my friend? I have had a lot of beautiful holidays in Cornwall, staying in Newquay, my favourite place was Mevagissey, I loved it there. I guess it's quite expensive down there! I would love to live by the sea. I actually live now where I was born, after moving 6 times no less! Mind you I haven't moved far, from Kent to London to Essex and back to Kent again. I may be moving again next year but it depends on the jobfront etc!

Hi wolfie34
You may ask, I don't mind. I was brought up in the Falmouth/Penryn area. I hate Newquay in the summer it is filled with huge seaguls trying to eat your pasty, big no, no!! I once sat inside a car to eat one on a boiling hot day with the window wound right up and there were four seaguls stood on the car, two on the bonnet staring at me and my friend. Newquay is always full of drunk students in the night time too so it's not a good place for families in certain places. My mum now lives in Truro and that is where I go when I go and visit. I still have 2 friend that I always visit when I am down and they live in Falmouth.
Cheers wolfie

Some years ago I moved from the middle of the country to the eastern seaboard Well almost to the sea or ocean. I'm about one and one hours from the ocean. The middle of the country has wide open spaces with rolling hill and fields. here where I live now the trees block the view of almost everything. When driving from one small town to another you can see the fields of beets (grown for sugar) and the corn fields waving their tops in the breezes. If you drive past a pasture you can see the golden and rust colors of fall and the grasses waving and they look like the rolling waves of the ocean. I miss seeing the sun sets from start to finish. Here you can only see the stat of a sunset because of all the trees. I also miss seeing a storm coming. Out there you can see for a long ways and here all you see is trees as you drive along the highway. I also miss seeing the waving grains as it ripens. The one thing I don't miss is the cold. I also miss seeing family

I miss your Mum coming by here and dropping pasties in MY freezer Humbug. LOL. There's a shop on the Lizard............Yummy!
I grew up beside the River Thames and I do miss the river at times. There's something almost magical about the stillness of the river early on a summer morning. Then you slowly start to notice that there is life. Duck and moorhens. The bark of a fox and majestic swans moving out from the bankside. A brownish vole cleaning his face and the languid flight of a skein of geese. Such memories.

I had my childhood in the beautiful place of Lingig Surigao del Sur, Philippines. Now I am living in Davao City. What I miss in our hometown is the seashore because it's really near to our place. I also miss my childhood friends and miss those days where we played beside the sea. I also miss my parents and siblings. Oh, one more thing! I miss the foods!!!
