I know you can shampoo dogs with baby shampoo, but I wonder if dandruff shampoo might help fight (or at least relieve the itching from) fleas? Anybody got any good tips and/or tricks? My dog is a 4 year old Cocker Spaniel with a rather thick-ish coat and he's just now starting to get a few fleas - I wanna nip them in the bud - I do also plan on getting Advantage from the vet - but finances are a bit tight lately.

Hi genihanna. Fleas are a hard problem to solve because the dogs always get fleas again. I don't know if in your place you can find a product that you put in the dog's neck that avoid the fleas. It is great. But if you can't find it you can try to shampoo your dog with a sulphur soap. It kill the fleas and keep the skin of the dog free from any allergy. It makes the dog's hair strong too. Hope it can help you. Beautiful dog congratulations!

Neat idea! He does have some "problem" areas in his coat where the fur seems a bit drier than in other areas. When he was little - I found him as a stray and immediately took him to the vet - they said he had heartworms and yes, I was heartbroken! (I fell in love with him at first sight!) So, luckily I had had a good year and happily got him treated properly - with those '$150-$175 each' shots they need to beat that horrible disease!
So, as you can see by his pic, he's very happy and healthy now - except for the spot on top of his back where they had to shave him to administer the shots. It never grew back in the same as the rest of his coat. So, I'll be giving your idea a try so I can keep him pretty! Thanks so much for the advice!

I too have a cocker spaniel that looks alot like yours. I love him so much. There are several things you can try, but this one is probably the safest. Make an effective flea treatment from lemons. Cut a lemon into quarters and place it in boiling water. Steep overnight. Then spray the solution all over your pet, especially behind the ears and generally around the head, and also at the base of the tail and the armpits. This will help get rid of fleas.
Hope this helps.

Wow - never would have thought of lemons - although, My little "Sandy" also was having a bout with ticks so the lemon might burn those open areas - but, I'll try it when he's better - Maybe in the summertime - the lemons could double as a way to bleach his fur too and make him look more touristy! LOL (He's so vain too - he thinks he is so pretty - 'course it doesn't help that "Mommy" tells him all the time that he is!) Thanks for your input - I appreciate it!
