Adding a new user to Windows

I have recently moved back into the family home where 4 people are using the family computer. SO when you boot the computer up there are 4 users to choose from and you have to click on whichever user you are. I don't have my own yet, so I just use mum's. I wanted to make my own but my brother won't let me as he thinks it will slow the computer down.
Does anyone know if this is true or not?

No, adding a new user to Windows will not slow it down. It is the activity you do on the computer and if you download programs, or surf sites that download a lot of stuff to your computer. Also, if the sites you visit put spyware, etc. on your computer will slow it down too.
I would say if you do a defrag once a a month, and check for viruses and spyware often (at least once a week) then your system should move smoothly, even with the new user added into the mix.

Well, I can tell you mine is the slowest user to boot up. And the reason they told me was is because I'm the owner so I get all there stuff as well. But will have to check in to that. I don't like a lot of users on mine as it is a pain. If you want to clean it up and you delete something of theres not meaning to. But I'm not so sure. Your friend onlydia. Have a great day

It has nothing to do with the speed of the computer, I guess! I hope you brother will allow you to have one! Take care!

No, it's not true and tell your brother I have certifications so I know what I'm talking about. If each user logs off when they're finished using the computer, then there will only be one user logged on at a time. If you choose "switch users", you will still have the other user active but I don't think that will slow down the computer either.

To be honest I believe that it doesnt make the computer slow. I know a family that had 4+ users on there computer and it ran as fast as it did from day one. The way your computer would run slow is if you have to many programs downloaded on it. This I know because my mom is very high tech with computers and she taught me well. So your brother is wrong, it has nothing to do with the amount of user accounts. Hopefully you will be able to get this resolved with your brother.

No it is not true.
All Windows does is to create a small file for your profile.
The thing which will slow down the computer is what you use it for.
Cleaning up your internet cache and defragmenting your hard drive once a month will keep your computer running smoothly.

I have one pc which I use exclusively. My nephew used to come and use it at times but he doesn't anymore so I really had no reason to add another user. Cheers!!

i think your brother just don't want you to use the pc. hehehe. anyway, i dont think it won't affect the pc that much unless you load it up with gigabytes of files. every user shares the same programs in the hard drive unless your restricted to. so when you add a new user all it does is take a little byte of file to create your customization and some folders to keep you separated from other users, i don't see how it can slow you down.

No making a new user does not slow the computer down. A new user uses the same resources as evey one else. It is only the separate "My Documents" folder that is opened for you. Rest of the resources remain the same. It is better to have your own user account so that you can customise it the way you want. You can also make your "My Documents" Secret in the sense that no one else can view it unless they log in as you. this is only possible if your C Drive is running on NTFS and not FAT 32.

Nah that's not true, you brother obviously don't want your name of his computer or maybe he think it will slow it down maybe because he also does not know about it but no adding your name there wont cause the system to slow down.
The reason for a computer to slow down is when it has so many programs installed and only has a small space left and when there is a virus on the system

Hi coffeeshot,
I don't think it matters how many people use the computer reaaly, you can have as many users and it won't matter.
