yup. exactly that.
it is to divert the "flow" of one's perspiration. So that it doesn't drip directly into our eyes. and because it's salty in nature, it does become an irritant.

I think our eyebrows have 2 major tasks:
- protecting our eyes by keeping sweat and water from running into it and stinging it. A couple of people have stated this before me.
I am not sure I heard this one allready, though:
- playing a role in showing facial expression. If you show someone without eyebrows we find it harder to read his or her expression. You will get more easily offended by someone who draws on his or her eyebrows pointed down; you will act to what you believe to see as an expression of anger.

Eyebrows are used for communication and expression. They are also used to protect the eye from sweat and dirt.

What a funny question! I often wonder what is the purpose of body hair in general but I have never given thought to why I have eyebrows. This discussion has brought some very interesting answers to your question. My eyebrows don't seem to protect me from anything but perhaps this is another one of those evolutionary things of science.

...must be art.. or perhaps to keep the sweat from our brow getting into our eyes.. but if so, that doesn't work all that well! So I'm back to thinking our brows are art..

I have the basic ideas for the purpose of the eyebrows but for now, I'll show you what I got from Wikipedia.
"The main function of the eyebrow is to prevent moisture, mostly salty sweat and rain, from flowing into the eye, an organ critical to sight. The typical curved shape of the eyebrow (with a slant on the side) and the direction in which eyebrow hairs are pointed, make sure that moisture has a tendency to flow sideways around the eyes, along the side of the head and along the nose. The slightly protruding brow ridges of modern humans could also still play a supporting role in this process. Together with the brow ridges, the eyebrows also shade the eyes from sunlight.
Eyebrows also prevent debris such as dandruff and other small objects from falling into the eyes, as well as providing a more sensitive sense for detecting objects being near the eye, like small insects.
Eyebrows also have an important facilitative function in communication, strengthening expressions like surprise or anger."

Hi there!
well, with regards to your query, im pretty sure i know this because, this once i have read over the encyclopedia.
Eyebrows and eyelashes share the common purpose, and that is to protect the eyes of a human being (if that is applicable to animals, that will do also), before a dirt can get into your eyes, eyebrows will already hinder it. if a dirt still surpass from the eyebrows, eyelasher will take over and will do its part.
Meaning, as an early remedy, eyebrows will work.
Hope it could help.
Have a nice day!

They probably help with protection of your skin, because you have little hairs all over your skin, so they must be there to have the same purpose. There must be sensitive skin where they grow or something. These could be the most logical reasons.

Nay, they are there to give a woman something else to complain about and to pluck at. LOL :) I hate my eyebrows and they are such a pain in the butt to keep them looking good. Do men worry about them as much as women?

The arch shape of the eyebrow diverts rain or sweat down our cheeks, keeping our eyes dry. This was an important feature for early man to retain. It's difficult to outrun a predator if you have sweat in your eyes and can't see where you're going.
Eyebrows have other roles as well. As one of our most expressive facial features, eyebrows help us determine how people are feeling without ever really asking them.

hi coolmailraj!
all our body parts have a purpose. God made them all for a specific purpose to accomplish His will but mostly so that to protect us. the eyebrows are there to protect our eyes from the sweat that comes from our foreheads. if the sweat goes to our eyes, this will hurt our eyes. so this is its main purpose. other than that, i guess it is for beautification purposes.
anyway, i do appreciate my eyebrows.
hehe take care and God bless you!
have a merry christmas! :-)

I am pretty sure there is a reason for eyebrows. It might be a big reason or a small reason. It's not very critical to me as of the moment. Let us know when you find out. Cheers!!

i really don't know what is the purpose of the eyebrows. but god is such a genious that he was able to think of putting the eyebrows where it is right now. i just can't imagine if our eyebrows were placed somewhere else.lol. what if our eyebrows were placed under our eyes?lol
