I heard something about a site that helps you find the perfect pet for your situation. I think it is called petfinder.com. from what i understand you plug in information about yourself like the family members and stuff like that. then it tells you what pets would make a good match for your family. I haven't checked it out so I'm not quite sure on that, but just thought i'd try and help.

I would go with a Lab or a Golden Retriever. They are both dogs that are smart, loyal, and have a lot of energy. They like to play, so that will be good for the kids. They are at the age, where they will want a dog that will do things with them and either of these two breeds are ideal for young children. They also tend to be healthy dog breeds, they don't get sick a lot, like some smaller breeds. Many times smaller breeds (certain ones) are more tempremental around children.

I am a "full thumbs up" to Thumper 11's reply! I am a huge advocate of Animal shelters, ASPCA, and a huge percentage of them put you thru the hoops before adopting to you! The make every effort possible to connect you with the dog that would be most appropriate for your family/you/lifestyle/home...etc. (That shud read, they make every effort,) It is very common that mixed breed dog's do not have the health issues that purebred's do! Sadly enough, there is a lot of inter-breeding with purebreds, trying to breed in the best traits, which can lead into breeding health issues into new litters as well! This is a lifetime decision, and I know it will be so great for your children! Take time making your decision, and you will have never-ending happiness!

I would recommend a lab or retriever or setter breed. Also the local animal shelter has many dogs that are needing good homes and are very good with children. Have you checked there? I would. Many of these animals, If they don't find homes are put to sleep, so I always send people there first. The ASPCA might be able to help you. I think that have a website. You should see if there is an animal shelter near you. I would also take the kids when you go and let them help in the decision. Let them pick one that they like and that interacts well with them. Usually these are mixed breeds, which often don't have the health problems that inflict the breeds, sometimes though the shelters will get pure breeds. Good luck and I hope you find a companion soon.

Have you thought about a husky? They are very kid friendly and very active. They do like to run a lot and they are quite entertaining. They are a little expensive but I think the kids would love it. If you have any questions about them that I can help with just let me know! Good Luck!
