Next week will you be sending the children to school with a gift for the teacher? Having three children and three teachers to buy for plus teaching aids etc, and I can't afford to buy for all of them or want to leave anyone out I don't buy any gifts for anyone. What I do is buy a book as a gift to the classroom. Have done this for many years now and it is a big hit with everyone.

I don't buy gifts for my son's teacher. I give the teacher, principal, and his bus driver some homemade goodies for a gift. I think the book is a nice idea.

As a teacher I've gotten some really nice gifts over the years. I received a beautiful mug and book from one set of students (sisters) that I still have. I have a wall hanging from one student, a calandar (the type you can reuse that has sayings for each day). I've also been given candy for a candy jar I keep on my desk for students when they are behaved. (Kind of a self-giving gift but you know, it's the thought). To me, the hand-made gifts are the most wonderful. Sometimes it's just hand written notes from students at the end of the year and I have those tucked away as memories in my teaching career, for my memoirs one day. Namaste-Anora

Well i did, but the teachers never accept gifts. They feel bringing up the knowledge of the kid is their duty and they feel honoured by them.

It is very unprofessional for the teachers to accept gift for their students,ACCORDING TO CODE OF ETHICS FOR THE TEACHERS.As much as possible avoid giving them anything its the job of the teacher to teach your children unless your child are required with the acknowledgment of the officials.

I like your idea and have decided to do the same thing with my son and his teacher. I was thinking of buying a little christmas ornament but your idea of donating a book to the classroom is better. I have three new books I recently bought for my son and I might just donate one to his class. GREAT IDEA!!! thanks for sharing.

That is a great idea. I was going to suggest that you buy a gift for the class room. Other great classroom gifts are interacting learning toys that the class can play together. Trivia Pursuit for kids is a good one.

Hi ya Anne18 Oooops I am so sorry I have started exactly the same discussion as you and I have only just read the notification and you started this one 6 days or so ago, I'm so sorry it wasn't intentional! Anyway, I make gifts for the teachers, like you, I have 3 kids and that is a lot of teachers and TA's to think about! My youngest doesn't have a specific teacher either and there are loads at his pre-school. I allow my kids to give 4 homemade gifts each and that's their lot!

You are a star Anne. What an excellent idea, Do you mind if I copy it and buy my daughters, teachers a book for the Classroom. I really would never have thought of this before. It is so thoughtful and really useful for the School. It saves on all on chocolates and unwanted gifts, a lot of teachers must get.

That is always thoughtful of you. Actually teachers wouldn't mind if you give them a gift or not because the know what the essence of Christmas is. But your giving a book is a wonderful idea because it would really be useful not only to the teacher but to the whole class as well. I think I want to try doing that since I am thinking what I'm going to give to my children's teachers. I actually gave angels last year which the teachers did like.;-)

I believe this is a great gift idea. Each year I need to make lots of extra effort to prepare a list of gift items not only for my own use but also for those who relies on my recommendation. My suggestions are mostly economical and full of surprise. And book is always a good suggestion. But your idea of presenting a book to the classroom - is really awesome. I feel excited and I'll keep this suggestion in my mind. Happy to read this discussion and feeling great to have a friend like you. Cheers.

That's a fantastic idea. Not only do the teachers feel appreciated, but the other students get to experience a new book and/or learn something new. I wish I'd have thought of that when my kiddos were young.

No I wont be doing this, my kids have never been ones for buying the teacher a gift. I ask them all the time and every year they say no! Your idea of buying a book for the classroom is a nice one though.

Anne - I think that is a great gift. I'm not sure how it is in the UK, but here in the US a lot of public school teachers dig into their own pockets to buy some of the things for their classroom. So any item like that helps them in their tasks. Great suggestion!
