Gifts for kids: How much is too much? What's your spending limit?

How much do you believe is too much (if you do) when buying a gift for your children? Do you choose a number of gifts, say 2? Or do you put a limit on spending? How do you decide what gift(s) to give? Is it something they want, need, or both?
