My parents have been asking me what I wanted for Christmas. Well the two things I asked for was a Wii and a new digital camera. Meaning just a small point and shoot... well being an amateur photographer, my parents have been asking, why not a professional camera. Well they have some very unrealistic expectations when it comes to a DSLR camera. They think they should be able to find one for $200-300. Well I found one that I would love to have on ebay. A Cannon D40 with 16 accessories and the external flash that would be about $1100 total. They laughed thinking that was too much. Well news flash!!! For what I need that's cheap! So my dad proposed to me, if I booked my first job with it, they he would buy it, on loan. Meaning that I would help pay for it with my booked job. So if any of you are in South Carolina (I'm in the upstate, but will travel), Western NC, Some parts of Georgia, and Tennessee, and would like pictures done (bridal, engagement, family, or wedding) please contact me and we will work out a great deal so that I can get my camera and you can get your pictures. Here is a link to my blog that has some examples of my pictures. If you would like more, just let me know!

hey hun,
What I strongly suggest you do is more looking $598 at staples that I saw just yeasterday. My mother is looking to get me a D80 Nikon SLR with body and lens kit for around $900 dollars. If you want the basics I would go for this. Then as you get more jobs put that money towards accessories. But first things firs is be sure to have a Strong portfolio. As a bride you will know that when you see a photographers portfolio it is nice to see an example of a full wedding shoot. Perhaps what you could do is enlist in some people who have been married prior to and perhaps have a faux wedding.
Best thing to do for first time gig is to do it for a friend. Or ask if you could take pictures along side their other photographer. You wouldn't be a contest for the photographer but would be able to get a full wedding in and help build your portfolio with your new camera.
Friends are the best way to go as they are more understanding if things aren't percice. Another thing that's nice with doing it along side the photographer is that no initial expectations were there. So if you didn't do a top notch job that's ok because they already had the photographer there doing photos for them.
This may possibly mean that you don't get paid a ton for your first gig. The point is to start off small and build from there as your credibility grows so can your price. But a price tag is usually what will make or break your deal. Going into a contract with an individual who doesn't have a strong portfolio and a high price will cause them to run with their hands in the air. Start off small or if you do go with a bigger price have incentives like a free engagement photo shoot (so you can test out your camera earlier) also so that you can get to know the couple, also so they can see your work before hand and feel more comfortable with giving you the rate your asking for.
Another great idea would be to tell them. You'll do an engagement photoshoot for them if they don't like it it's free of charge and they dont' have to proceed with the wedding. However if they do like it they only have to pay 80$ for a cd with all the photos on them etc. If they don't like it that's fine you have more to add to your portfolio etc.
If you need some more tips I'd be more than happy to help you out :)
Kindest regards,
Amanda

The $598 was for the Cannon rebel that I saw at staples. Sorry my computer likes to do funky things when it comes to me typing.

The $1100 was $875 for the Cannon D40 SLR with 16 accessories (memory card, adapter, lenses, filters, and more) and then the additional $295ish I think was for the external flash with reflector and movable. So it was a really good deal... and what I would need. I had asked some friends who do photography and that is one of the cameras they use.

Very well then however I would strongly suggest you take a peek at the D80. As you know things start to depreciate as well as cameras only getting better. You can always find accessories for the camera body. (Although that is a great deal you are getting a lower camera)Just make sure to do your research then and understand that you probably won't end up making all that money back on one gig alone.

I can not give you a job, but if you have to settle, look up "prosumer" cameras. They are between a professional and point and shoot camera. So, you have some control but also auto settings. I found my Olympus SP-510 Ultra Zoom on ebay for a little over 100$ and am satisfied.

You have some nice images. Maybe you could post on a Yahoo site. I live in Missouri and they have a MissouriMarketplace for people in our state. Perhaps they have one for your area as well. That would probably be a better way for you to find someone local. I own a Nikon D50 and have been using it for several years now. I have been extremely happy with it and purchased it for around $900 with one lens. I found an additional lens on Ebay for about $200 about two years ago. Good luck getting the camera you want and branching out....

Goodluck hun. Just got the D90 and have to say it's top notch. When i go on Kijiji or craigslist there are some amazing cameras on there. I saw a D300 for 800 (mind you it was just the body)

Unfortunately not yet. We are still trying to find something that we can afford. But it probably won't be until after our wedding... 2 months from today :)
