If other countries can do this why can't we? Simple Change Could Reduce Obesity in U.S. by 20 Percent According to a new study, a ban on fast food advertisements in the United States could reduce the number of overweight children by as much as 18 percent. In addition, the study reports that eliminating the tax deductibility of television advertising would also result in a reduction of childhood obesity. The study’s authors found that a ban on fast food television advertisements during children's programming would reduce the number of overweight children ages 3-11 by 18 percent, and would lower the number of overweight adolescents ages 12-18 by 14 percent. Should the U.S. pursue this path, they would be following Sweden, Norway and Finland, which are thus far the only countries to have banned commercial sponsorship of children's programs. Research indicates that there is an 80 percent chance an overweight adolescent will be an obese adult. Over 300,000 deaths can be attributed to obesity and weight in the United States every year. It's really not that complicated. You make sure they don't eat a ton of junk food and get some exercise every once in a while.

Im a little confused on how not showing commercials while kids watch TV will help them lose weight or stay thinner. I didnt know that the food can come thru! lol No in all seriousness I really dont understand it. It is normally the adult/parent that buys the food. Another thing it isnt bad eating and things like that all the time. I wrote before about my family and out of 7 we have 3 that are considered overweight. Not only do we not eat out and go to resturants (maybe once every 3 months do we go to a fast food resturant) but he is also in sports. He plays football and wrestles. He also doesnt overeat as I dish out the food. We also dont buy lots of junk food, snacks for us is more vegetable, fruits and yogurt. Another thing is that nowdays you cant just send your kid out to play. There is some sick people out there.

I think what they are telling us is that the commercials that we watch on TV enter our subconscious mind and there for influence our choices. This make sense to me I know that all the information we gather thru our senses goes into our subconscious mind and influences our life with out us being really aware of it. There have been many studies that prove this. They were even doing these studies while I was in college.

Well I understand that, but it still comes down that normally it is the parent that buys the food, therefore I guess the parents are watching the show with the kids.

Get them off the video games, and computers and playing hop scotch, red rover, capture the flag, and neighborhood baseball. Also stop feeding them the candy and junk and make proper nutritious meals.

You can ban all the fast food commercials you want. You can ban junk food from school cafeterias. You can ban sweet snacks at play time during kindergarten. You can ban all you want but it's NOT GOING TO HELP. You can feed your child only apples and celery but without proper exercise, your child will pork out and be fat. Kids today spend 8 hours a day glued to a chair in school with no physical activity. If they do get a gym class or a PE class, it's a joke. Standing in line for 40 minutes to hit one tennis ball or hit one baseball during a game is not physical exercise. Then when school is out, they go home and plop down in front of a computer or a Nintendo and eat whatever mama and daddy buy. It can be healthy snacks like apples or it can be junk like cupcakes and potato chips You can NOT blame the food for having fat kids. YOU the parent are to blame. YOU bought that computer. YOU bought that Nintendo. YOU are the reason your 13 year old weighs 200 lbs and has diabetes and heart problems. YOU are to blame. Not McDonald's. Want to make your child lose weight? Unplug the TV. Unplug the computer. Ditch the Nintendo. Make your kid join a gym or a softball team and MAKE them get out there and get active. Quit blaming McDonald's because your 13 year old is fat.

Hello savypat, i believe it starts already in the times when you feed the kid as baby. If you give him in the beginning at around 4 months the first solid food and put sugar or other sweetener (Honey, juice and so on) in it, then it shouldn't be a wonder that the grown up baby/toddler wants to have sweet things afterwards. His sense of taste is damaged already and he doesn't know how the raw food really tastes when it's not sweetened. Try this with your kids with tea. In the past (15 years before) i took usually one tablespoon sugar. But then i decided to take it no longer with sugar to have the real taste of black, green or red tea. And it tastes great without any sweetener for me! Today BBC News offered an article about "Obesity 'controlled by brain'". There they found that seven genes are having also an impact in the brain and that person who have these 7 genes have 1,5 - 2 kg more weight than the average person. It means the brain has not the full control to know that you have overeaten for that day when you have these 7 genes. You find this article here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7783088.stm

Don't worry unless your Doctor has told you to do so, many thin children do just fine. And if you were that way you know why she is.

Restrict their tidbits and burgers intake. That will help a lot. My impression of American kids is they eat a lot of tidbits and burgers. More so than those in other nations.

YOu are asking the question focused on WHAT YOU DO NOT WANT, therefore you are getting more of what you do not want, and the cycle keeps on turning... focus on what you want instead...ask "How can we make our children grow up healthy and strong and active and physically fit?" and the question answers itself

the main reason children become over fat is due to junk foods... no a days children eat more junk food rather then healthy food...parents should avoid that and make them to eat healthy food and tech proper to exercise in day to day life...if parents fallow this to child then simply children's can avoid overweight..:)

I think, there's no need for our government to ban fast food commercials, this won't be very effective anyway, as we can't stop our kids to drop-by their favorite burger and ice-cream places. The most effective way to control the food that our kids eat relies mainly on us, the parents! I suggest that parents should start training their kids to eat healthy foods while they're still very young. Healthy foods- such as fruits, whole-wheat bread, milk and fruit-juice, are the best snacks to give our kids, instead of those fattening ones. I have a nephew which, had been trained to eat fruits for snacks since he was little. His mom never gave him any kind of snacks at school but fruits and fruit juice. Now he's a pretty fit and healthy teen-ager, he doesn't like to eat burgers, ice-creams, pizza and softdrinks. According to him, those foods taste sucks. The reason is he got used to eating fruits and other healthy foods for snacks since he was little. So, the point here is, in order to keep our kids from getting obese when they become adult, we'd better start feeding them healthy foods while they're little.

I think the best way is put their video games in the locker and let them play in the ground...thats the best way out...u can even tell him to use cycle to go school to their friends house and to market also...u can also encourage him to play outdoor sports or for body building.....thanx ...enjoy life....

The BEST way to keep children from being overweight is to KEEP THEM AWAY FROM THEIR GRANDPARENTS!!!!!!!!! Sounds harsh, I know... but seriously... We have struggled with this for the past few years and no matter how much we stress our rules of "one sweet a day", Grandma and Grandpa don't care... our daughter has free reign over any and everything she wants at their house and I seriously think she spends ALL DAY munching on candy, chips and soda. It's gotten so bad that we can't leave her there unless we are there to monitor it! I know grandparents are supposed to do the spoiling, but at the risk of our daughter's life-long health and habits? I DON'T THINK SO!!!

i don't have a child yet at the moment... but when i do have one in the future, i will make sure that i will teach them healthy eating habits and a balanced diet since they are very young... hopefully they will understand and will be able to choose healthy foods for themselves as they grow older... take care and have a nice day...

Sugar, high fructose corn syrup and inactivity are more to blame than anything. Do you know how much sugar there us is a Slurpee, or BIG GULP( supersized sodas and slushies)? How many children also live on Macaroni and Cheese? The cheese is not the problem, the excess macaroni is, and do not get me stated on corn products.
