Many people seem to have the idea that learning ends when we leave school. Of course nothing could be further from the truth. Education gives us the basics, life itself is the real teacher and there is much to learn in every phase of life.It often takes a lifetime to know ourselves, and everyday we learn from the world around us. No matter what our age, there is always more for us to learn and we should always stay excited about learning. We must never feel that we have the last word on anything, because tomorrow may bring a new truth. Your thoughts please.

There is a man in Australia called Barry Jones. He has had a remarkable career. He started out by being totally unbeatable in the quiz show Pick a Box, went on the take a PhD, became a famous trade union official, entered parliament and reched minister level, and is now one of the highest officials, again, in his political party.
He said in an interview a few years back, that the older he gets and the more he knows the more humbling it becomes to realise just how little he actually does know. The man is a walking encyclopaedia and he says that.
Learning never ends for anyone with an inquiring mind. I myself went to university at 55 after a mixed career with several different strands, and late last year complete a PhD program. As long as there is life in my mind, I will continue trying to learn. Perhaps one day I might be able to win a quiz show too.

Hello Pose. It is well said that life itself is the real teacher with so much for us to learn in every phase of life. Learning never ends. I love learning and even when I am not in my middle age, I am still learning a lot within my power. I love to learn and always try to make myself updated with new knowledge to fulfill myself so as not to fall behind the times. In one word, life is short, art is long. Thank you for the nice discussion. Happy learning, my dear Pose.

Hi williamjisir, Once again thank you for responding, you are a good friend. I agree with you we learn so much from life from our experiences and the people who come into our life. Of course some learn much more than others because a person has to be open and willing to learn. Some people for example don't think they can learn from their children, but children are amazing teachers. Happy Holidays. Blessings.

Hi Pose, I have been thinking about this for a long, long time. I feel everybody in this world is a teacher and a pupil and the roles keep reversing all the time. Why, even a little kid can teach you great things. And the wise say that even a donkey has something to teach. And a wise person never stops learning.
Thanks for this lovely post.
Cheers and happy mylotting

Experience has always been the best teacher but it does not always teach you the best way to do something. Studying with other people can open a whole range of things that you have never experienced and never will so both forms of learning are valuable.
Going to university and taking out my degrees and my postgraduate work taught me a huge amount of things that I can never experience. At the same time things you learn in theory only often needs to be practised to get it right like medicine and surgery. I would rather have a surgeon who learned in school and then improved his knowledge by experience than one who had only ever learned by trying things out.
When it comes to learning how to live you life well that too needs experience but books and other people can give you ideas that show you a direction or path that you had not seen for yourself and might never have found and that path enriches your life.

Hi sharral, Thank you for commenting. Of course school is important and we all need the basics, if someone is studying law or medicine they naturally must attend law or medical school. I'm not trying to make light of any of this, but stressing that we learn so much from those around us and the situations we encounter in life. Some people of course learn more than others depending on their attitude. I appreciate your adding to this discussion. Blessings.

I agree that we learn a great deal from everyone around us. People who are open minded learn from everyone they can, sometimes what they learn is how not to be but that is still learning.
I meant that combining both forms of education is best. School cannot teach us how to be aware of non academic things and often only gives us a narrow view of the topic. Experience and listening to others can teach you more than school every can.

A very interesting discussion Pose....Many a times the knowledge we get from school is just basic and is sufficient to tide over the exams, and to get an overall view of the different subjects and courses that are at our disposal.Any degree that we acquire wil only help us to land a good job,but it does not equip us in any way to handle ourselves when we step out of college and into the world to make a living. We soon realise that life is our greatest teacher and learning is a continous process, and if only if we are eager to learn from our mistakes and eager to absorb all that life is offering us,will we be able to make a success of our life.

Learning is unstoppable. in each step in your life you learn new things, new experiences. life is strange and it may not always offer us what we wanted or what we intended to .i have seen people who stopped education in early days saying that they had enough knowledge to live and also people who continue to study for ages saying that there is always more to study. but i think the the process of education never ends.

Hello, Pose123.
You said that education is not only in school, and I agree with you. We are constantly learning, or at least we should be. Not only at school, but at home, at our work, with our friends, with our enemies, with everybody, and at simply everything we do in this life. We can learn from a cup of coffee and from a love relationship. Do not misjudge the small things, as they can teach us as much as the big events. You can learn, from a CD, as much as you can learn from a friendship. Perhaps even more. You can learn from every little thing.
I disagree that life is the biggest teacher. I used to think like that. But now, I have different thoughts. Life is like a book, not like a teacher. We have all the lessons in there. If we want to learn, then we must be the teachers and teach ourselves. You cannot learn from life if you are not open minded. You can only learn if you are able to read the book, and for that you must be the teacher. You are the one who must take the examples of life and teach yourself.
Respectfully,
Munhozmib.

When the student is ready, the Teacher appears! Fame and fortune does not just appear over night. Its a matter of learning from the world around. Colonel Sanders of KFC Fame was 74 before he became a Millionaire. He had spent nearly a lifetime learning how to cook and sell fried Chicken before it finally paid off for him.

There is a saying "the teacher appears when the student is ready".
That means that all our life we learn, from small and big as well.
Life is handing you lessons all the time, you never see it coming.
Education is good for a certain period of our life, but life is much longer...

Yes once we feel that we've learned everything in life or on a certain subject we stop improving ourselves. I've learned much more from experiences out of school and from people that aren't deemed teachers. My friends teach me what I want to know and so does my family whereas schools teach me a bunch of crap that I could care less about. I've always wondered why lessons were forced upon us at school, aren't we human beings with options like the teachers. I think it's ridiculous that you lose your voice just because there's some older man or woman that gives you all the orders and whatever they say goes. I would much rather continue learning on my own where I can make sense of things and not hear about how somebody else interprets it.

the word 'learning' has such a magnitude that it can never be enclosed with triumphant boundaries. it is like the mother nature, vast , pure ,fresh and mysterious , always unfolding the unknown every second. one life is too short a time to complete one's learning. the real teacher is like the nature with widespread arms ready to give and a true learner is the one who eagerly moves forward building a bridge between himself and the teacher till eternity.

What I can only say is that LIFE is a continuous learning process. Noone in this world stops learning as soon as he left the school.

we are all classmates and schoolmates in this one great uni-verse-city (university) called Life Academy..... If you give up learning this university never quits learning on you even you don't want to learn anymore.... so keep in mind to learn everyday is productivity everyday....

totally agree...
we go to school for the things to 'apply in life' like math, science, language.. whatever - but life itself is the real teacher..
you should take whatever experience you've gone through all your life, to try to make your life the next day a better one.. to prepare and try to pass on - teach - some of that 'knowledge' to your child, family or people around you...
i always say that my children are my teachers.. i have five of them.. and each of them have taught 'patience', 'creativity', 'innovative', 'the importance of first aid',.. and many, many more.. and i learn a lot more from the many friends around me..
gosh.. i learn something new everyday here at myLot.. so many input from the vast population of myLot...

I agree with you. We learned only the theory in school but learning practical side from life. I also believe we are learning everyday. I used to learn many things by way of observing. I even learned many things from my son (he is now 7 years old). If a person is very observant he/she can learn many things from their surroundings. I think our education never complete and upto the end the learning process continues..
Have a wonderful day.

Hi Sreekala, I agree, the learning process continues and we can learn much from observation. We can learn from animals and all living creatures but especially we can learn from Children. We should remember too that there isn't a person or situation that comes into our life that we can't learn something from. I want to thank you for responding. Blessings.

The Real Teacher in my life is the LIFE in itself. At school I never learned so many useful things that real life taught me. Real life gives me hard-to-swallow lessons that a person simply can not to forget. And it is the best lesson one could ever have.
Although I have graduated a long time ago, I always answer to this question of `Do You study somewhere?` with: "I am a student of LIFE.".
