Does it feel like Christmas time to you?

I don't know why, but it just doesn't feel like Christmas time to me. I guess it could be the weather as it has been very rainy here with no snow. The economy could have something to do with it also as people aren't spending as much as in prior years. But to tell you the truth I think a lot of people have forgotten the Christmas spirit and the true meaning of Christmas! We have commercialized and over done Christmas so much through the past years that we have forgotten that this is the celebration of the birth of Christ! Does it feel like Christmas time to you?

It doesn't feel like Christmas to me much either. I think it is because instead of being the kid who gets to enjoy waiting for Santa to come, I'm the adult that has to be Santa. My husband got laid off so that put a halt to any present buying. We managed to get the kids some stuff but I feel bad that we can't get anyone else stuff. Most of the family has been really supportive which makes it feel more like christmas. but my mother in law doesn't seem to care. When everyone else is saying, not to worry about getting them anything since we are broke, she says nothing. She makes us feel like kids if we don't get her more jewelry she never wears.

I know times are tough for everyone and her being an adult should realize that! Don't let her make you feel guilty! She's a grown woman and she'll get over it! What I'm doing this year for family and friends is making New England Brown Bread...I now live in VA. I have some friends here from New England and a lot were born here in VA. I figured the New Englander's would like a little bit of home for Christmas and the one's who never had it would enjoy trying some. It's the thought that counts! Society makes you think it's how much you spend! I pray things will get better for you and your family soon and that your mother in law comes to her senses! LOL! Merry Christmas!

it does because we just put up our christmas tree and i have a christmas luncheon at work tomorrow but i have been really tired lately and havent had too much energy for christmas activities much.
but i agree with you, this christmas like past ones, is more commercialized than the last one. its not about stuff, but about the reason for the season which is Jesus.

I have really been into the Christmas Spirit this year. The economy part of it doesn't really bother me because we never really got into the commercialization part of it. And as far as the weather goes it could have a bearing on it.
We have about 3 inches of snow on the ground now with more falling so I think that helps add to the feeling of it too! We have already had snow on the ground a couple of times this year. Hopefully it will kick in before long with you. Have a Merry Christams

Like you we never got into the commercialization part of it either. I was raised that way in a small New England town and that's what I passed on to my family. Seems people are just so sad these days...I think a little Christmas snow would really help out! LOL! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

hi there joerhonda! in my country, the Philippines, Christmas is the most extravagantly-celebrated season in the whole year (aside from Holy Week, come to think of it... hehe). no matter how rich or poor you are, how much money or debt you have, you make sure that you celebrate Christmas in the best way possible: lots of going to Mass, lots of gifts for others, lots of donations to charities, lots of food for the reunited family, etc. this is all being done to glorify the day when the great Lord Jesus Christ was born. =)
right now, even if my country is plagued by a corrupt president and government, by the worsening economic crisis and even unpleasant weather (too many typhoons even during november to december), everybody is still in a festive mood. there is only a small adjustment due to the crisis, but everybody still buys gifts for others and buy a lot for their Christmas feasts. and i think that is cool because people are still upholding the old Filipino traditions and they haven't forgotten to give thanks to the Lord for their blessings all throughout their lives.
in my case, personally, although i am losing cash because of paying severe credit card dues, i am still willing to spend a good amount for gifts for my friends and relatives, donate a good amount to charity, and participate in the budget for my clan's upcoming reunion. i have a personal good reason to be extremely thankful to God, especially this Christmas season: i got "naughty" in the past, but God was good because i had an HIV test and I came out negative. after leaving the hospital with the good news, i went to Church immediately to receive the sacrament of Penance. i swore to be celibate for 5 years. and now, i am still grateful to God because He gave me a chance to change without something disastrous coming into my life.
thanks and more power to you! =)

Very powerful story! Congrats on the test results! That's wonderful! I think maybe here a lot of people have forgotten and are not grateful. It's been a long hard year here for so many and I think many are just worn out. I hope we all find the Christmas spirit here soon! Thanks again for sharing with us all! Merry Christmas!

Some years Christmas comes and goes, but this year it actually feels like Christmas. My shopping is almost done. I had the decorations up by December 6th. My work is shutting down (with pay) for Christmas on the 23rd. Whhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeee.
That, and I watched Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer a few days ago and spent yesterday singing "We are Santa's Elves" and "Oh by golly have a holly jolly Christ-mas this year."
OH NO... "Have a holly jolly Christmas and in case you didn't hear... " It's starting again...

If I would have read this question a few days ag, I would have answered definetly not. However today I have to say yes it feels like Christmas. I have been out of work for months and really didn't feel in the holiday spirit. However out of the mouth of babes (my 3 year old granddaughter) who I gave a dora candy cane to I am completely in the spirit. The hug and the light in her eyes when she told me boy nana you have Christmas all year gave me the boost I needed. I now truly believe that gifts don't matter its the love all year people remember.

The more years that go by the less and less it feels like Christmas. I'm not sure why but it just seems to go that way. We have no decorations up, no one wants to really help do anything or do any cleaning so we can put up a tree. It just is getting old. I kind of wish I lived on my own by now because it would mean I'd be able to actually decorate and do all that I want to do without having to wait on everyone else.

hello joerhonda,
I don't feel like Christmas time today as much as I feel for the previous years. Though we decorated the house with Christmas tree, lights, and all but still something is lacking. Maybe because many of us is a survivor. We can never tell if in a day or two we still have a job. For right now, the company I'm working with for twenty three years is cutting jobs for 20% of its employees. So, it's really hard to spend money. In fact haven't completed my gifts yet for everyone.
I guess the best thing we can do is to share our love to everyone and pray really hard and thank HIm for everything. Let's celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ in a simple way.

Hello, joerhonda.
Being in the Christmas spirit or not will depend only on you, and not on others. If you are not feeling Christmas, it is something wrong with you. No matter how much they commercialize it. It doesn't matter how much they sell or how much they buy, what really matters is what is in your heart. Have you forgotten about the true meaning of Christmas? If not, then I see no reason for you not to have the spirit in you. Come on, feel joy. Stop focusing on the bad points. Perhaps this is what is keeping you from the Christmas happiness: you are focusing too much on the negative, when Christmas is all positive.
For me, this is CHRISTMAS! One of the happiest times of the year!
Respectfully,
Munhozmib.

Good post! I guess when I was 16 I felt like that too as I did not understand every thing else going on around me. I am a very positive person, but sometimes it is very hard to be filled with joy when there is so much pain and sadness in the world around you! Some day you will understand, but until then I hope you never loose your great outlook on life! You keep that and you will do great things! Thanks for the kick in the butt, I needed it! LOL!
Merry Christmas!

you know, I kinda felt the same way last year but I think it is even worse this year. I usually have my tree up and decorated, outside lights done and all the day after thanksgiving, but this year I havent even been in the mood. I put the tree up today and havent even finished the decorations. I agree that it is just all to comercial and greed has really hindered my spirit. My church has a service sometime around christmas. the blue christmas and it is a service mostly for people who are saddened around the holiday for whatever reason. I will probably go to it this year.

Here in the Philippines, I believe it is the strange weather that is really depriving us of the much-awaited Christmas breeze. I hate the frequent rains that have been spoiling the Christmas spirit that once used to linger when December comes. I remember before how we would all go out at night and get so thrilled with the wonderful touch of the cold breeze in our skin. But now the weather is terrible that you would not want to stay outside because of the rains. Actually, it is not much of the money that matters actually. Just seeing the glittering Christmas lights beautifully adorning the windows and the trees is enough to cheer me up but how could those Christmas lights give cheer if the rains would not want to stop? I'm just happy though that at least it is already 3 days now that the rain have not been falling and the weather is cold and we somehow have already started to taste the much Christmas weather. I hope this will continue. But the news this morning, states another storm is coming up. Ohhhh!

But despite the lack of Christmas breeze, I believe the Christmas spirit could be felt deep within our heart...rain or shine, warm or cold, with or without money for as long as we have Jesus in our heart. Each one should remember that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus our Savior and this should remain for all seasons. For after all without the birth of Jesus Christ, salvation will never be possible.

I think people worry too much about buying expensive presents and do not realise that the best present that you can give your children is your time. I really enjoy christmas and having time to spend with the family. As soon as the decorations go up I feel like it is christmas.

I felt like that last week but it is starting to feel a little bit like Christmas today as I heard some carol singers in my local town and I think it has now got me into the Christmas spirit. All the beautiful Christmas songs really get to me.
I think Christmas is far to comercialised like you said and a lot of people are forgetting the true meaning of it all. We should always remember Christs Birthday.
I think a lot of families are having it really hard this year and cannot even afford there heating bills or their even their rent, nevermind buying christmas presents. There must be a huge strain in these families especially with children, but they should just buy a small token instead this year.
I hope you feel in the christmas spirit as it draws closer. Take care and Merry Christmas.

When I was a kid I was looking forward the Spring Festival.Relatives gave children money at that day.Children bought toys and shared with fellows. Now I grow up,so are my fellows. We live different lives.
I think children can exactly feel the Christmas time, they are wandering what gift they are going to get tomorrow morning. As a adult,we have a lot of pressure from work, family, etc.Today is Christmas, you have now feel about it,because you have not finished your work given by boss.
Sometimes I feel life is wondful, however,it makes me very tired.
Merry Christmas!

Actually no it doesn't. I barely managed to get the tree up last weekend & haven't bothered putting out the other decorations. Everything just seems to be going wrong & money is terribly tight. My cousin, sister & I have all decided to not bother exchanging gifts betwen out houses since money's so tight.

I think a lot of people have made the decision to do that. We have a small family so we haven't had to make that adjustment. My friends and I have all decided not to exchange this year. We may exchange some food, but no presents. I hope things get better for you soon! Merry Christmas!

Rhonda, actually christmas is well celebrated in my country, now every people are very busy, all roads decorated, houses beautified, schools organizing parties etc, all these have made christmas memorable, interesting and worth celebrating. Yes, it is the birth day of our saviour Jesus Christ, no matter the condition, the rain and snow, Him Jesus must be celebrated. Your country may not be ready for it but other country like ours anxiously waiting for it.
Bless you!

I felt that way last year, because we didn't get our first snow fall until after Christmas. This year though is a bit better. Still not the way I remember it when I was younger, but I am very excited this year. I think for me part of it has to do with knowing I'm done shopping, and have done very well for my kids. Last year we didn't have much money and some of our gifts were given to us from a friend, and they weren't really gifts we would have picked out for the kids. So it wasn't as exciting. This year we bought all the gifts ourselves and are very excited that the kids will like them.

I know its hard but if people will really tend to look at Christmas as just gifts and food it will really disappoint in some years since our finances are never ever the same year in and year out.
But if we go back to the real reason for Christmas we will never get disappointed. Let's Remember that this is Jesus' birthday and if you've got Him in your life, you will never be disappointed.
