This is probably one of my biggest pet peeves. People are always telling me that my name is either said wrong or spelt wrong. Its my name my mom spelt it the way she wanted it said.
Its Cassaundra not Cassandra or Kasandra or even Kassandra.
Its said Ka-Sawn-Dra.
It makes me so mad that people cant even bother to say it properly when corrected its oh well i'll just say it my way...or even worse they say ok well i'll just call you Cass then. I dont like Cass and I tell people that and that i dont and never will answer to Cass. As rude as it may seem after they've been told i HATE being called Cass i WILL ignore those that disregard my preferences.
If you know me well enough and long enough you're a close friend or family member and they tend to call me Saundy. I dont mind that....but again i hate it when strangers take liberties with my name and shorten it or dont bother saying it properly.
Does it bug you when people dont take the time to say it right? Or disregard your preferences and call you something after being asked not to?

My name is not unique in my country. So, people do call it properly. But ever since I have been living in the US, people have a lot of difficulty pronouncing it. Sometimes when they ask me my name to write in a record, I just spell it out to them and after I finish, the usual question is "Is that your first name? wow.. It's so big". I normally accept what people try to call me as(as far as it is not monkey, donkey or you a$s etc ), better still I suggest a smaller version of my name. I suggest you ask them to call you a way which is small and won't be a problem for anybody to say.

Oh i suggest shortened versions. Saundy is one...but people tend to shorten it to Sandy and thats not part of my name. if my name was spelt Cassandra it would be and i could accept that then but to me not bothering to say my name right is just impolite. And for that reason i always make sure that I'm saying someones name right or ask them to correct me if i'm wrong.

I can understand how you feel. My dad has an english family name, my mom has a french name, they gave me both of their last names, and gave a more french first name, though it can be pronounced in both languages. However, in the past, many of my teachers have had difficulty saying one or more of my names. I can say that it's somewhat annoying. I can certainly relate to your feelings and such.

YUP! I know that feeling. My name is Leah, pronounced Lee-ah. People call me Lee, they call me Layah, and 98% of the time no one spells it right. I've had:
Leigha
Lea
Lia
Leaha
Leighah
the list goes on!
I've had two different last names in my life (the name I was born with, and then I took my mother's Danish maiden name as an adult). The first surname I had was pretty common, but spelled differently, and I always got the more common spelling. My Danish name? It baffles a lot of people. Also, my Danish name is just long enough that a lot of people screw up the pronounciation. LOL
AARRGGHH!!!

Yeah it really does for me also..my name is Bala subramanian and many people from other states and other countrymen stammer to say my name and they say my name in their own way which does not even resemble my name or call me shortly as Bala, which is somewhat ok and i think even you would stammer at spelling my name at first and then i think you could manage, but people over here even though they could manage spelling my name dont even bother that and spell my name differently..Happy mylotting....

hi Cassaundra, ( i hope i spelled it right )
you cant blame new acquaintances when at first they mispelled or mispronounced your name because to be honest its not common aside to the fact that it was spelled as not the usual Casandra :(
with regards to your discussion i dont bother if they mispronounced my name for as long as i know that they are the one calling me. but on legal documents or correspondence i want my name to be spelled correctly.
may i ask why your mom gave that name, what is the reason behind? and why she choose to to spelled it that way?

Yes, you spelt it correctly.
I think it bugs me the most when people I've known for ages (like my boss for example) cant be bothered to spell it right half the time the bank wont cash my pay cheque because he cant be bothered to spell it right. So i have to go and ask him to correct the spelling. He spells it like you did with the usual and the bank just will not accept the spelling difference. (that's what set me off on it today) Most of the time he cant even be bothered to say it correctly.
I even have trouble getting legal documents sent to me to be spelt right half the time they argue that I'm wrong.
My mom gave me the name because she thought it was pretty and she spelt it the way my family says the name.

that is really annoying. well i guess they intentionally do that if they have known you for some time. there are people who have a habit of annoying other people for the purpose that they want that people to get pissed off. well, at first ask them if they have checked the spelling of your name. with the tone of joke, you tell them that you will not sign any document if they misspelled your name. hahaha even if that is your boss.

hi Cassaundra, i've never had a problem with people saying my name wrong, they usually just can not be bothered to say it. i was named after both my grandads and my parents wanted it double-barreled first name, robert-william, which no one except them seem to use an that frustrated them.
when i was in school my parents would be either ringing the teachers/head master or going to see them every week because letters where sent home adressed to the parents of "robert" not "robert-william". it never bothered me having my name shortened in fact i prefered it bit now most people who know me just call me sock, sockie or as one friend says sockette, as i only answer to robert-william from my parents an ignore everyone else who says it, most of my family call me sock too.
even when i meet new people i introduce myself as sock as i feel more comfortable with it.

Thats really neat. I noticed it bugs my mom about my name too. I answer to alot of names from my family. MY little sisters used to call me deedee or Nonni. When they were learning to talk they had a very hard time saying my name. (i still answer to those on occasion)

Always.I am afraid that you may not be able to say it right too being a foreigner who is new to our language.Any how I will go on with it.My name is Balakrishnan.
Most of the time people call me Blasubrmanian.I just got tired of correcting them.
Both are the names of Hindu Gods.

I am named after the Patron Saint of Scotland (who, for some unexplained reason, was a Greek!). This is not to say that I have one ounce of Celtic blood in me (more's the pity!)
Antway, I do hate it when people, on learning my name, insist on shortening it to Andy without so much as a by your leave! I know many 'Andrew's who are quite happy to be called Andy but I am NOT one of them. I was rather taken with Drew for a while but it's not a very common contraction and, after all, if I prefer my full name, why shouldn't people use it?
My surname is another matter. It's a good English name (though very uncommon) but, even though I pronounce it clearly, I have taken to always spelling it out as well because people will insist on hearing a 't' or a 'y' where I put a 'd'. Actually, very much the same thing must have happened to my ancestor who moved from Worcestershire to London in the 1790's. In Worcestershire the name is spelt and pronounced with an 'i' but when he moved to London (and, presumably, not being able to read or write, he had no way of knowing) the name got written on his son's birth certificate with an 'e', which is one reason why it is so uncommon!

That's a really neat story! My granddad found a similar story about their family name - only with an E/A and we can trace our family back really well to this ancestor and we know the certain spelling of the name is related to us some how.
I agree that if you prefer to use your full name people should respect that and not keep shortening it on you.

well yes mostly all the people i ahve met in my life have a problem pronouncing my easy name.... whats so difficult in it?
it is S-H-O-N-A-L-I for heavens sake not S-O-N-A-L-I.....
but still people use the latter to pronounce my name after telling them repeatedly that that is not my name....
now i have finally given up
let them call me what ever they want
i will only respond to the people who call my name correctly....
as simple as that

My name is all the time pronounced badly here in the US. Most of the time it doesn't bother me. I'm living in another country where nobody else has my name and it is difficult to pronounce, wha do I expect? It's not their fault if they can't pronounce it right. My husband always laughs when they mispronounce my name lol Now if I had a name that was easy and people don't take the time to pronounce it it would bother me a little.

My name is only a four lettered name.. and you wouldn't believe the mis-spelling's of my name! My name is Rita but people have spelled it Ritta, Reta, Retta, and Rheta...
They don't usually say it wrong, but I get called Nita a lot.. that's my sister's name! Even my parents get our names mixed up. When we were younger, when mom would get mad she would scream RENITA.... that means.. you both better get in here NOW! lol!

No. Maybe the center of my Ego is not so conscious to the misspellings OF MY NAME!!
Because, we have NAMES so we could communicate more easily. So what is so special about misspellings? They are not saying: "Hey, Peter, come here!" They say Kasandra, kasawndra, kasssandrey....AND THEN YOU GET THEIR MESSAGE. That`s all what Your name is needed for. And also maybe for contracts and diplomas You are going to make in Your life. Hope not to get any misspelling on the check of 1 million dollars, thou!

misspellings - usually its on important documents or as i mentioned earlier you get the things like a cheque the bank wont deposit because your name doesnt match whats written.
As for pronounciation and nicknames if people cant be bothered to atleast TRY to say it right...my name or even someone elses and then tell the owner of the name they say it wrong...its just plain rude.

Hi saundyl. I have the same problem as well. It only happens sometimes though... In the Philippines, most people know that my first name Ma. is a short for Maria and say it Maria but here in Ireland they would call me Ma as un MA. I usually end up having to explain or sometimes let it go.

I have a cousin that's Sarah and my brother in law's sister is Sara. I've mixed them up at times and on occasion fallen to my dyslexia and the Sarah ends up being Sarha or something like you have written. But i've never seen Sarah/Sara spelt like them on purpose like those before.

Hey saudyl! I like your name! And as soon as I saw the spelling
I knew how to pronounce it! Why is that so difficult for
people to pronounce! I think it's a nice and pretty name! I
would definitely get angry if people did that to me too! My
name is Leslie and there really isn't much you can do to that
except pronounce it Lesslie. I pronounce is Lezlie. I don't
usually bother to correct people because it would be sort of
pointless since it is pronounced both ways. My friends call me
Lez for short and I have no problem with that.

I have the same problem as you. No one has the same name as me here so they don't know how to pronounce it. My real name is "Marija", but people always pronounce it with an American "j" and I have to go through explaining that it's the same as "Maria" but spelled differently every single time. I think that my Math teacher this year was the only one in this country that was able to pronounce my name correctly.
My nickname is Masha, and believe it or not, people manage to mispronounce that too. I can't remember the number of times that I've had to explain that I'm not "Marsha", but Masha. It's even easier than "Marsha", but people still get it wrong. o_o
Over the years I've been called different names, including Marija, Marsha, Martha, Marya, Marja, and many others. Maybe I'll start keeping a list.

It doesn't bother me. I respond to pretty much any name that starts with a J, and have even started introducing myself as Jay. My name is Justin, but I'm frequently called Jason or Josh. Some other common J-names I get called would be Jack, Jacob, and Joseph.
When I worked at Target my manager thought my name was Tim, I never bothered to correct him because it was better than yet another J name. Was quite funny because my friend would always try to correct him and I'd tell him not to. Then another co-worker corrected him and he paused "You're name's not Tim?" "Nope" "...how come you never said anything?". Luckily he had a pretty good sense of humor.
