It's not so great when the doctor tells you some not so great news

Today I had a visit with my doctor because I needed a medical reference to become a foster parent. He gave me a great reference but then had some bad news to go with it. He decided to check my blood pressure and put the cuff on my arm but for some reason he needed to retake it three times. He checked my heartbeats then my stomach with pressing and tapping. He told me that my blood pressure was quite high and it read 120/98. I talked to my mom tonight about it and she said I was on my way to having a stroke unless I brought it down. The doctor told me to cut out salt in my diet and get more exercise. I am not waiting to make a new years resolution because I"m going to start tomorrow. I know that dieting can be a struggle sometimes because I've been up and down with weight over a number of years and many times as well. I'm only in my early 30s and this is way toooo young for a person to have this happen to. I plan on eating better with the first thing of cutting salt right out of my diet. My mom also mentioned that it could be from working different shifts and too many of them because it messes up your body and you don't get a good rest. Smoking is another problem with high blood pressure according to my mom too. I'm going to have to work at one thing at a time but soon enough I will do it. Where there's a will, there's a way! Do you have high blood pressure? Have you ever?

Wow yours is off the charts too. I wasn't given any meds because the doctor sees that I am capable to lose weight and get some exercise and cut out foods and stuff from my diet. I have been thinking like crazy about buying an exercise machine something like a treadmill. Just to get a bit of exercise because it's minus 40 with windchill outside and has been like that all week so it's way to cold to go walking. So the most I can do right now is watch what I'm eating and be careful that way for now. Thanks for your comment I hope you get better too!

Maybe you need to be on 2 meds. The doctor could be a pill pusher but he could posibly just concerned? I couldn't imagine having a heart attack. I'm sorry you had to go through that. That scares me. I suddenly realize that life is precious.

120/98 could stand to be lower, but I'm not sure I agree it is "quite high". Certainly a warning that you need to do something before it actually is quite high. Mine was 136/100 the last time I went to the doctor and only because I had not been taking my meds like I should. I am now. Your doctor is right about the salt and your mom about the smoking. In my case it is a family thing. My daughter also has it and I think my son will end up with it in the future. I'm on him to take care of himself.

Isn't this scary irishidid? I find it scary.. very scary. I don't like warning signs at all. I've never been good at hearing bad news whether it be with myself or someone close to me. I'm sorry your kids have to go through it with you . I hope your son listens to you when you tell him to take care of himself too. Since you have this issue and I'm pretty new with it I have a question then. I understand that I have to cut out salty things from my diet and I"m going to do that as of today and I'm also going to be drinking a lot more water from now on. How is coffee? Do you drink this? Is it okay for high blood pressure? I drink about a cup to a cup in a 1/2 in the mornings. Since this is a stimulant, is this bad? THanks for your comment

I drink a lot of coffee and as long as I take my meds and take care of myself I seem to be fine. My diagnosis came as the result of going into the doctor for something else. I went because my left foot quit working. I mean literally. I couldn't move it and it just hung there. It's what's known as drop foot. The first thought of the doctor was that I had a stroke and he set up a cat scan. I'm sure he was especially concerned considering my BP. A neurologist can up with the real reason and I add this as a caution to all-crossing your legs constantly is very very bad for you. I ended up having to wear this weird plastic thing on my leg that made my foot move correctly. The funny thing is that I had been to another doctor before and showed signs of hypertension during that time. Right after the birth of my son in fact. The doctor that finally diagnosed it also happened to be a heart specialist. When my other daughter was diagnosed with a heart murmur he was the one who looked over the test results.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about that. This information can tell something about your health problem. Because you had your gall bladder excised, so you are more easily to have digestion problem than normal people who have it.You know, the main and key function of the gall bladder is to secrete bile and help with digestion.Without gall bladder, the body can't take in and out the food properly. When the waste products can't be exported out the body, they clogged the blood vessel walls, so that the blood circulation becomes slow, and the blood becomes thickened, and then the medical check-up will show that you have high blood pressure or the high blood fat. Just imagine the traffic. When traffic jam, there are too many cars, people in the street, so that we can't move forward. Just like the system of our body. Because my BF is like you, had his gall bladder excised, So I m so worried about his health. And his father has high blood pressure. You know according to the theory of disease inheritation, he is very likey to have this problem. He never eat meat high in fat.Because he can't digest it without the help of gall bladder. And I always tells him to do exercise.Don't sit in front of the PC too long. However, It is likey that he is prone to have high blood pressure. Now his waist is full of undigested waste. A small tips for you. you can beat the gallbladder channel. This is a famous traditional Chinese medicine. This can help the secretion of the bile. I follow this every day. It's very easy to do and very useful for our health. The method is : To beat long outer thigh from the knee to the rear end. Time: About 2 mins for one leg side. Whenever you like it. Better to do from 23:00.because it's the time when the gallbladder channel begins its job. Just with your fist. don't too beat it too heavy not too slight. You feel comfortable, that's OK. All the best for you,

So basically you must hit yourself in the leg? How does that help your gall bladder? I got the nurse last night to check my blood pressure again and it went down! 120/85 from 120/98! I felt better knowing that cutting out salts and drinking more water now has helped a bit. I still want to get it down lower. Thanks again for your comments

Hi, Are you feeling better now? You are welcome and I feel very happy that what I said can be of a little help to you. And I know that, the most problem is that your sleeping. Due to your job, you can't get normal and enough sleeping time. I don't know whether you have ever heard about such heath theory that" Our body can repair for itself",that is to say, If we are ill, we don't need pills or medicine, we just give it enough nutrition and rest and follow the body's working schedule and then our body can repair itself.Do you know human body working schedule? Maybe we can often read or heard that" We'd better go to bed not late than 23:00", because 23:00-1;00 is the period time when the liver is excreting toxins, and the period 1:00 - 3:00, our gall bladder begins it's work to excreting toxins, etc. So if we live our life simply, naturally, many health problem will disappear. All the best for you,

Relax you are not on your way to having a stroke or anything of that sort. You will live for many many years don't worry. high blood pressure (BP) is not a disease but yes the blood pressure has to be kept under control or it will lead to other major complications. If you keep your blood pressure under control you are safe. The important thing is to know and be aware that yo have high blood pressure and then to take remedial action to keep it under control. More often than not blood pressure is without any reason and is termed as "Essential hypertension". If a cause, like obesity or kidney problem etc can be identified, then cure that problem and BP will go away. If no cause is identified then yo have to live with it and take medicines to keep in under control. i have had BP for the past 30 years. I got High BP when I was 23. I keep it under control with yoga and medicines and I have no problems.

A little advice from what I know about high blood pressure. You can live with high blood pressure but it is taking a toll on your arteries and heart. You should have it under control in order to prevent problems later in life like strokes, heart attacks, etc. It is good that you got your blood pressure checked, but I am dissapointed your doctor diagnosed high blood pressure from one reading. This is impossible as your blood pressure normally rises and falls during the day and night, depending on your mood, your activity, stress, etc. A proper diagnosis should come from several readings, preferably not one in the office. I would invest in my own blood pressure meter that I could use at home to see over time how good or bad it is. Even though most of my family have high blood pressure mine rarely goes over 130/90 and can be at any time at rest 120/80. 130/80, etc. I did get my doctor concerned however when one reading shot up when his assitant tooke it. I think it was because she is somewhat attractive and she had on a low cut top and my blood pressure shot up to 170 over something. I guess I got caught getting excited. Subsequent reading were normal so we did nothing about it. It would not hurt to cut down salt, moderate weight, get some exercise and make better dietary choices. Life is all about choices, do not go on a diet per se as diets do not work as you go back to eating the old unhealthy way. You have to make intelligent healthy choices for the rest of your life. Choices like an apple instead of apple pie, less or no sugar in your coffee, oatmeal for breakfast instead of a bacon buttie. I would be not too concerned unless you have frequent high readings, and if your lifestyle changes are not enough you should get medication of which there are many. I would try the no smoking/exercise route first though, it is better for you all round.

Okay, take it calmly. Normal is 120/80. High blood pressure is sometimes genetic. Does someone in your family have it? Start with your diet. Cut the salt, chips, sweets, and processed foods. Really look at the labels. You would be surprised what is in the soups and dinners. Quit the smoking and get a lot of exercise. Working the night shift can be hard on the body. After you try these steps and your pressure is still high, there are many medications that help with blood pressure. Best wishes.

This is pretty much the advice my mom was saying too. I don't have a problem with giving up salt, but the sweets are going to suck! I'm going to do it though. I want to feel better and not live life with this black cloud over my head. Thanks for your advice

When I worry, my blood pressure goes way up. Normally it is in the high normal and controllable, but when I get upset, and something bothers me, it goes up. It really upsets me, because today I got some news that probably made it go sky high. Yes, they should really tell me good news. It is bad enough when it is due to smoking that I do not and too much salt, but when the only reason is that you are a bit overweight and when you worry , it stinks.

See I've changed my eating habits before and it's not too bad. I have the will power when it comes to only that though. The things that I am going to find the most frustrating is quitting smoking and relaxing where I don't get stressed out. I've always been very high strung and get stressed out easily. My hubby doesn't help for that matter. Sometimes he just bugs me until I want to hit him. I'm trying to control that though but it's hard! Thanks for your advice

I did. I don't smoke, but it was still rather high. I began slowly incorporating healthy habits into my lifestyle. If you start a drastic diet and exercise program,it will be very difficult to maintain. Incorporate small steps into your routine. I started by cutting out diet sodas and increasing my water intake. The doctor also prescribed a mild diuretic which really helped. I began walking more and after a couple of months I was jogging. I cut down on red meats, but didn't give it up completely. I began grilling and steaming more and eating more chicken since I don't like fish. In 10 months, I lost 40 lbs and feel better than I have in 20 years. My blood pressure is now 115 over 70. I just turned 49 and I weigh what I weighed in high school. I have a lot of energy and feel good about myself. Slow steps will help you establish a healthy lifestyle and get your blood pressure under control.

Well cutting out red meat doesn't seem that hard to do. I love eating pork and chicken anyway. I find that hamburger makes me ill. I guess what I could do is maybe go out to eat once a month so it's not as bad either. I plan on drinking more water but I have to wait till payday to buy some bottled. (Plus we're doing our christmas shopping then). I am actually looking forward to losing some weight so I can be healthier. I don't want to overwhelm myself in the beginning and plan on taking little steps towards a healthier lifestyle Thanks for your advice!

I have always had the opposite problem, low blood pressure. I tend to be cold all of the time. Sometimes if my pressure gets too low, I will pass out. This has happened to me on many occassions. As soon as I have some orange juice and sit awhite, I am okay. I hope you get your pressure under control.

Are you sure you're not diabetic? I look after a lot of patients with diabites and we always give them orange juice when their blood sugar is too low. I am feeling quite tired from all of this, and I just wished that the doctor never told me about this because now I won't know if I"m tired because of just lack of sleep? or from BP being high. THanks for your comment

Hi, I read your post carefully, and in the end I got that U are worried about your high blood pressure problem.Yeah, it's not a good thing to hear that there is something wrong with our health. En, it seems that high blood pressure is a common health problem. I heard that if a person is over-weight, he/she may easily have high blood pressure problem, and the theory is that over-weight is the reason for many health problems. If we can control our weight in a normal level, and then many health problems will disapper itself. In my mind, keep healthy is very easy. You just "follow the nature", that means when time to eat, then you eat, and it's time to go to bed,and then go to bed. that's is keep a good life habbit. if we want to have a healthy body, then we need eat healthily, exercise correctly, and follow a good habbit, such as don't eat too much food high in fat, don't smoke, don't drink too much, don't stay up too late of all night. In a word, health is in our hands, not in the dortor's control. So if we want to be healthy, there is many things we can do for ourselves, just need to act! It's very hard a thing to follow for many people. Keep a balanced life. All the best for you,

Well smilingfish, I very much appreciate your great advice and I do plan on taking one step at a time. Firstly, I will cut all salts out of my diet. With going to bed early that can be a problem because I work nightshifts so I start at 11pm and work on until 7am. I don't get to bed until after 9am because I have to get my son on to school. My body has been use to this up until yesterday when the doctor took my blood pressure. I am going to work on quitting smoking too as I have done it before and I stayed away from it for exactly nine days. I seemed to get really sick when I did that because of the withdrawals weakening my ammune system (so the doctor told me) I think my blood pressure was up yesterday because of all the different shifts I've been taking and lack of rest I've been getting but like I said, I'm going to eliminate everything that could be doing this right now in my life. Thanks again for your great advice ~HAPPY MYLOTTING~

I don't have high blood pressure but recently my college was at church and fainted, the doctor told her that she had high blood pressure and also she could foucs from one eye, she was so worried. She has to be on diet as the doctor told you, cut salt excersie a lot, which is the most effective way to low the pressure. However she will be monitored in 6 months time and if the high blood pressure hasn't lowered she has to give her pills. High blood pressure is really dangerous for stroke even if having high blood pressure in pregnancy. I think that smoking may cause too high blood pressure and also lack of exercise. Well hope you stick with the diet and lower your pressure you are still young, and there are lots fo other things to eat.

I was thinking and considering weight watchers again because I've done it twice and it helped me gain a healthy lifestyle with eating good portions. As soon as I stopped doing it and missing junk food again, I lost interest and didn't do it anymore and I guess that's why this is happening to me. I've never had this problem before where I had to watch what I ate and did whatever I wanted but I guess this comes with age? Thanks for your advice

I'm not going to let this stop me from living comfortably. I'm not going to dwell in this news forever so I plan on getting myself healthier and happier from now on. I started today by not eating salty food like my friends here at mylot and my doctor told me. I'm so glad this site is available and there are others that are dealing with my common issues so at least I can talk and ask them about it if I'm not aware of anything. Thanks for your advice
