hi there. i'm starting to fiddle with DSLR's as popularity is increasing. Still on a budget though, was looking around and found that most stores are recommending either one of the two cameras. couldn't make up my mind. Care to share?

The Canon is newer with more modern CMOS sensor and better basic photo settings and output, especially in lower light. It is smaller, lighter, has dust reduction, live-view, and is very straighforward to use. The D60 uses the older (noisier) CCD sensor, has no live view or dust reduction. It does have very good ergonomics, and depth of field preview which the 1000D does not. Look at Sony and Pentax before you commit.

Interesting question. Both camera are very close to each other, is all depend on your budget. I personally have no problem with Nikon. If you ask me I'll go for D60 as it is in my wish list for quite sometime. As for Canon, I have not use any before so can't really comment on it. However you can check out some review about 1000D from Digital Photography Review website, seems like the 1000D is quite a good entry lever camera.
