If you win a big fortune what would you do with it?

I just heard about a couple who donated a huge sum that they had won in a summer lottery camp to a NGO that they share their thoughts for. I really appreciate, specially when they do not kind of live a decent living! Had we been with all material comforts in life, with nothing to think about, living a comfortable life with a big house, car and decent livelihood and with all that matters, would we still do the same? What would you do? Would you help yourself by supporting the cause you believe in or spend it on yourself?

I would donate a lot to charity. I would prefer it go to helping people rather than to the government. Taxes on large winnings are outrageous if you keep the money for yourself. I don't really have anything material I want that badly. I would like to pay off my school bills and my parents house and maybe buy an office but all of those things will be paid off eventually so I am not really worried about it. I would rather the money go to someone who needs it more.

I really appreciate your thoughts there. For someone so young like you, this I wasn't expecting! It was a pleasant surprise and made me feel that good people are there irrespective of anything.

I know what you mean and I have been there and know how material can actually rob some weak person of his/her sanity and values many times. I rather not see myself there. you just be the person you are. Wish you a blessed life forever.

Thank you! For some reason I never really got into the materialistic phase that sweeps many young americans off their feet. My family and friends always bring me much more happiness than money. I have always been middle class so I have always had enough to eat and a roof over my head but not much extra and that is ok. I never felt I really needed anything else. It is sad, too much money actually ends up destroying a lot of families so it really is better to give it to someone else many times. Merry Christmas!

I have been in many ways wanting to help children seeking emergency medical care and who are denied it for the lack of suffecient money. I do know that there are organissations who do help, but there are few and the children who need helpi n this regard are many. This is something that i have been wanting to do something about for a few years now, and get very touched and helpless when seeing a child suffering or dying when there is chance to try and do something. While most of the fortune would be used towards that i would use or save part of it to ensure that the basic needs, requirements and some amount of comfort of my family and loved ones are taken care of.

I really appreciate your thoughts Alok and do wish from the bottom of my heart that you d get to see yourself there soon. The plight of the children in our society is miserable and condemnable. And instead of playing the blaming game we must ensure to do our bit. that makes so much of a difference. I am sure you will agree. With the change in the socio-economic structure of our country the conscience has been changing a lot. And I am sorry but it's for the worse. I would be a great move to be able to empathize with the less fortunate children. We can take up one child t stat with and with proper resources we can reach out to more. With associations with organisations I am sure you will do great and help yourself. Good luck!

I most certainly agree Mimpi. Although the medical care is something that that these children require has caught my attention and awakened my desire to do something, there is somuch more that can be done in terms of education,clothing,food...There are organisations that do get involved, but at the same time would like to be in the forefront of things once in while to see the smile on their faces and the glimmer in thier eyes.

Just one day try to visit one home for the under privileged children and buy them ant little thing that you find suitable and see then smile. I think that's the ultimate bliss! I did that once.

that is a very noble deed. All of us like to think we are selfless, as there is nobility in putting the interests of others ahead of one’s own. In large measure, selflessness is what makes us human.

If I get such an huge amount, I would also like to donate the same to an orphanage or such organisation. I believe, that we must donate, othewise, some part of our earnings to the under-priviliged. I think, we if donate, God will give us more to enjoy our life.

I think i will be frank here.If i win a huge sum , the first thing i would do would be to put a certain amount away , so that i am able to live in comfort, i am not too bothered about luxury.I would go about helping my relatives and others who are in need of money and donate only if i am sure that it is going to reach where it should.I have seen the way the funds are mismanaged as i have a relative working for one of the leading International Charitable organisation. They give out only what is left over after the staff distribute the money and other things among themselves - the money that is sent for the needy children.I would rather do the distribution and help personally without involving any one else

Hi Kiran I agree and I tend to do something like that. Contributing money wise gets difficult and I try to reach out to the orphanage, near our house with clothes, sweets, blankets, toys. The glitters in their eyes is so blissful!

If I received or won any amount first of all as much as I would like to help a lot of people I would like to first help the ones dearest and closest to me. First I would like to secure my kids future or at least get them an educational plan till college and help my mom who definitely got nothing but us at the moment on her therapy so she could walk again, send my brothers to school and if I'm blessed with all the money in the world (LOL) then I'd do a little something something for my self and my hubby then I'd like to invest on some properties, build a big house for the street children, get some teachers for them, a playground and then the same for those handicapped.... I could go on and on... oh I forgot if I got a little money right now, I'd go back to school so I can work and provide for my kids.

Good morning, mimpi. I have not been interested in buying lotteries for more than a decade because I don't think that I would be that lucky to win a big fortune. But if I win a big one, I think that I will be more practical to improve my family life as well as my parents', parents-in-laws', siblings and some of my best friends, as they are close to me and they back me up in my career. Maybe I should buy some lotteries one day to try my luck to win a big fortune. With enough money, I will have a lot of things to do, like making some real estates, which is my favorite... I wish good fortune falls on my dear mimpi.

A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a legally constituted organization created by private organizations or people with no participation or representation of any government. In the cases in which NGOs are funded totally or partially by governments, the NGO maintains its non-governmental status insofar as it excludes government representatives from membership in the organization. I don't know. To be honest, I think I would spend some for myself and then share it with a few charities that I think need my help and those close to heart. Kudos to the very generous and kindhearted couple though.

Thanks, Mou. I'm doing well. Just worked from 9a to 10 or 11p (an hour break between) the last three days. And now I'm freaking out a little bit as I just realized that I'm doing an early Christmas celebration with Boyfriend's mom and I am not done with my shopping and I only have a couple hours set for it tomorrow. I hope you are doing well also.

Will give help first to my own relatives who are very much in need, then buy my children houses and lots of their own, give them capital for business give them money to be deposited in a bank for their future, share my brothers and their families also won't forget my friends whom I used to run to in times of need then will give to charitable institutions and 10 per cent will go to the church.

I think it depends on how much i have won. If i have won something really very very big then i guess i would be putting up a company where i would be employing all people who are jobless especially those who have nothing and those who have not finished their education or even those who had no educational background. I just had this thing in mind eversince i was still young that i belive if everyone would just given the opportunity to make their life better i think they would really choose to. I think the only purpose that there are still people who are living a difficult life is maybe because they were not given an oppotunity to live a better live. I think if we could only offer equal opportunities to all people in our country whether rich or poor i think we could really minimize crimes that are being commited by people. I hope someday there would come a time where we could eliminate poverty in our country so that we could have a better place to live in.

If ever I win a big fortune the first thing I will do is to build my own house. Make some businesses. Secure the future of my children. Give my mom some money to spend with. My whole family will travel. Give some money to my aunts and uncles. Donate to the less fortunate children. Donate some to the church. there is a lot more I want but spend it to help others and yourself for the benefit of all.

For me, I would keep half for myself and give half to charities that really need it. I said I'll keep some for myself because I'll use it to pay for my tuition in college so that my parents won't think of it anymore, and then maybe I can save the remaining amount for future uses or donate it again to less fortunate people.
