I have found this brill meatloaf recipe on Hillbilly website and it calls for an 8oz can tomato sauce. Can I just weigh out 8ozs of tomato sauce from my sauce bottle? Have never made meatloaf before, but it looks good filling and cheerful, won't cost much and its somethnig different ot do with mince rather than shephards pie! Thanking you

Hi ya Anne18 In my experiences of when I was in the State living for a while meatloaf is known as poor man's food as it made more often when families were strapped for cash but because they liked it too! Bit like in the UK with the old baked potato but people tend to bake spuds because they like them and not so much because they are skint! Once you have this recipe of to a t I would very like it to try too. I keep thinking to myself that I want to try it out but haven't got around to it. I think it is a bit tricky to convert cups into pounds and ounces but if you manage it I would love to know!

Good oh! I have seen recipes in the past where they say 1 cup of butter, how do measure butter in a cup? I do have some measuring cups but have never used them for that very reason. I hae tried to convert the measurements using a converter but it makes no sense, do you get this problem? How's things with you anyway? All set for the big day?

Humbug, the way that we here in the states measure such things as butter is to have a two cup clear measuring cup put one cup of water in the cup then add the butter or such until the water is at the 2 cup measuring line. Hope this helps.

8ozs equals one cup, can you measure it that way? I made a meat loaf with a package of fajita mix and if you like things a little spicy this will do it for you. Enjoy and thanks for the web site.

Thats a good idea, I could make two small ones, one for the children and a spicy one for hubby and me

I don't see why you couldn't use the sauce from your bottle. I have made meatloaf so many ways its not even funny! I often make sauce and meatballs and freeze my sauce. I have put it in my meat loaf. Here is a few different ways too. 1. Italian bread crumbs and egg (to help it stick together) 2. Seasoned salt 3. Oregano, garlic powder, egg, parm cheese

I love meat loaf Annie and have recently got used to cooking with tomato sauce. I'd just measure it out, or more likely just slop a load in without measuring it. It's a man thing!! I do the same with hot chili sauce. That sounds awful, but rarely is! I must have a look at the Hillbilly site. You seem to be getting lot of good stuff from there.

I love homemade chili. I make the best around I have been told. Problem is my family doesn't care for hot foods. Especially dad, so when I make it it is for just the wife and I or I make 2 pots of it. I got to have mine hot and spicy. HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I'm not sure what your bottle of sauce is - it might be fine, but it might not, depending on the consistency. Ah....I looked it up and it appears that what you call tomato sauce might be the same as our ketchup/catsup. It still might work for your recipe, but it could definitely change the flavor because there are more flavor ingredients in that than there are in the tomato sauce called for in the recipe. The tomato sauce in the recipe is often used in making pasta sauces or beef chili, a little thicker than what you're talking about. I'm trying to find the equivalent item for you. I haven't found anything exactly, but there is this: Substitutions: 3/4 cup tomato paste (puree, to you) + 1 cup water = 2 cup tomato sauce. I hope this helps.

Everyone makes their meatloaf differently. My mom used to use heinz 57 sauce instead of ketchup. I spoke to someone once who used tomato paste to give it more consistancy. I tend to use ketchup because hubby doesn't like the 57 sauce. It does make it a bit crumbly when it's cooked... just a bit, it doesn't fall apart or anything. But it tastes wonderful that way. The only other way I've tried it is with 57 sauce.

I use ketchup in my meatloaf, and a lot of people do, so yeah, you can measure that out. If the recipe doesn't call for it... put a layer of ketchup on the top of it too, and sprinkle with some italian seasonings. That top layer of ketchup is really yummy.

I love my grandmother's meatloaf, she puts a lot of great stuff in it. Also, I cannot leave a meatloaf discussion without doing this, "And I would do anything for love, oh I would do anything for love, but I won't do that".

I don't see whay you couldn't do this. My fave little trick I use when making meatloaf is I add one package of dry onion soup mix with it then I top the meatloaf with one can of Cream of Mushroom soup as it bakes. Very tasty. HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Now, I don't know what tomato sauce bottle you are talking about, but spagetti sauce isn't the same as tomato sauce, but it might even taste better. So, if it's just plain tomato sauce, sure, 8 oz works.

It would make any difference if you weighed it out. We usually make meatloaf about every other week. I hope you enjoy yours.

Sounds good Anne. Let me know what it tastes like. It sure does beat using mince in shepards pies. I am sick of it also. I made spagetti bolognaise with my mince the other day. My daughters love it. I was looking there to see what eight ounces of sauce would be, the nearest I would say would be a small cup (not mug) of it. It is hard to understand all the cups and things as most of my recipes are in ounces.

8 oz is equal to one measuring cup or 16 measuring tablespoons. I have Pyrex glass measuring cups that have cups, mls, and ounces on them. I love 'em! Enjoy the meatloaf - that sounds good and I might have to have some tonight!

I've never added a can of tomato sauce to my recipie, I use ketchup. But most cups are typically 8oz .

Simple: 8 ounces of any liquid including a paste is equal to 1 cup.

I don't think it is an 8 oz weight measurement but an 8oz liquid measurement. Usually most measuring cups have the ounce markings as well.

hi Anne, I am not into cooking regularly as my wife is a really good cook and i do help out once in awhile. I find that she sticks to the recipes while i like to experiment. i put most of the ingredients by approximation. The tase may not turn out to be exactly as the recipe says but then i am sure it willnto be that bad either. on come occasions it may taste better to have a little extra sauce or a little less. it depends on what a person's taste is like.

Hi Anne, I just checked my can of tomato sauce, and it is 8 oz weight, not volume. Since HBHW is an American site, I would assume she means like Hunts tomato sauce or some such, which is a little thinner than ketchup. As long as it stays together in a loaf shape while you cook it and doesn't look soupy, you should be good. :)
