What does this star do?

I and other people sometimes have a star next to their name in myLot with a number inside. When I hover my mouse over the star, a tooltip appears saying it's reputation... what is this? what does it do? and how come I have 7?

Once you reach 100 posts you get a star. Your first ranking is generic but then your ranking goes up and down based on whether other members + or - your discussion or your response to a discussion. That's why it's good to + good discussions. It helps that poster's star ranking. The rankings don't earn you any additional money, it's just something to look at.
