Anyone dealing with not having a car and find it frustrating?

I am almost 30 years old and I still haven't had my first car yet. The reason is because I never make enough money to save up for one. I am alone and I have to pay rent, water bill, electric, etc. That leaves nothing left over with my small income. I live in a small town, mostly rural with hardly any jobs. Bus transportaion here is horrible and doesn't even run on weekends. I would like to attend college to better myself, but the school is 30 minutes from me and I would need a car to get there. People usually buy cars when they get their tax refund every year, but my income is so low and I do not have kids so I don't qualify for the larger earned income/child credit most people get. I am doing the best I can, but I am tired of it. It is so embarrassing and I feel like crap because I don't have car and I have to get a ride from the grocery store. Several times I have had to walk 4-5 miles on a busy roadway or route just to get somewhere. My mom has a car, but she can only do so much and helps me the best she can.

Oh my!!!I am 48 when I have a car. But still I am not driving. hahaha.. Well, i used to live in the country where having a car is not a necessity. We have public transportation everywhere and I can just ride anytime i want to go anywhere that's when i was yet in my country. When I migrated in US, I feel like a prisoner. I can't go anywhere unless somebody will take me to the place. But A friend, offered her extra car for me and said, i will just pay it when I have money. I have now the car but I am still learning how to drive. There is always a way, if you will try.

Do they not have transit in the states? I always assumed they did. Where are you from originally?

There are lot of buses and taxi and also train but only in big cities. Well, even when you are in small cities they have buses but I am living in a country area. Most people where I live now have a car. No buses will pass by here. I originally come from the Philippines.

I was in the same situation and heres how i took care of the situation it does take time but each time i did this i thought boy this is hard BUT there is light at the end of the tunnel. ok so here goes every time i went to the store i got change some times 2-3 cents some times 50-90 cents and that change went into a jar at home i counted it periodically to see if i had enough to afford a car. when i had $400 saved up i took it to a bank and cashed it in now $400 wont buy you a luxury car but it can buy you one that will get to around for a short period of time. I then got a car and with that got a better job from there i took $50 out of each check and put it in that same jar and when i had enough to get a better car i did so. Now i cant tell you that in the time i was saving i didnt take some out because i needed it but it sure helped me save. I now have the same jar i put change in for vacations and im about 1000 from going on a cruise with my whole family of 6.

My boyfriend does not have a car, and he is finding that he does not have any independence without it. I keep telling him,"if you hate your father so much, why not go out, get a real job, earn a lot of money, buy your own car, and get away from him?" I think that he feels trapped.

I was in the same boat as you til about november last year. I paid for my drivers test and bought my car with my student loan. I opted for schooling online through www.homeed.com (MacTech Distance Education). I have 2 kids so it was easier for me to do my schooling at home plus I didn't have the transportation to get to the next town to get to a school. I lived in a town of 700ppl and didn't know anyone. I did my shopping once a month when my mother decided to come get me. I hated relying on other people just to survive. Do you have your license? can you get a loan for a car or financing? I know it is hard but you have to just keep trying.

Yes, I have my license and I do keep it renewed because I don't want to go through the whole process all over again. As for a loan. I have bad credit and can not qualify for car loans. Nothing I can do, but keep trying.

Im4real79, you are in great company right about now with the shrinking economy. I too just completed a move and find myself without a car at the moment but I've been down this road before and know what to expect. I moved closer to work. Amazon.com is my best friend because they deliver right to my door-and, yes, they do sell groceries! I work online whenever I can and request amazon giftcertificates whenever possible. Surveys bring in the most extra money for me. You have to have faith and truly believe in what you want. I want another car but I want to purchase debt free (cash). It will take me about four to seven months to save the money. Find an extra money-making venture that suits you and keep plugging away at it until you reach your goal. No matter what it is, it will take some time, just do not give up; each time you give up you have to start all over again. Poll your fellow mylotters if you cannot come up with any ideas, you'll be surprised as to what they come up with. Begin saving, even if it is only the spare change you find while walking around town, you can get free coin wrappers from your bank. Recycle if you can, being without a car puts you in a unique spot for recycling; pick up a used grocery/utility cart from a thrift store or yard sale. Hold a yard sale once or twice a year; best time is around the beginning of school. Look for things to resell as you walk about. Make your time worthwhile while you are out and about; if you have to walk, make it pay. Keep the faith, and remember that life is all a matter of perspective. Good Luck to ya!

YEs and no. I've basically had my own car since I was 17. This is 8 years. currently I cannot afford to insure my car. SO I pay my monthly payments on my car but Its not insured. So its in my back driveway.. but I can't drive it. I'm going to try and sell in in the new year ... but I have to replace a whole door first.

I am a student and i love driving. My father passed away when i was 8. After that my brothers worked and did alot for me. But when anything use to come regarding car i was neglected like anything. Both my brother's had bought a new car twice but they never use to give me when i wanted it. When they had some work which they want me to do, then they will surely give it. That was rude, i use to steal the car key and run out of home when they use to sleep. That was few years ago. But now i am a university student living in a foreign country and here i need a car. I have to go out to places but i have to travel by bus. however, i should thank god that i have enough that my brothers can buy a car. Some people cannot afford to buy them. I hope you will save money and buy a brand new car soon. Best wishes for that. keep smiling

Yea that's a bummer. Actually on days like this where it's snowing and icy conditions, I'm glad to take the transit (I live in NY though :P.) I still can't believe the price of gas is under 2 bucks here in NY though. I'm afraid how high it will rise come summertime. You know it's going to shoot up like a rocket and with the dwindling economy that spells major trouble. People can't even pay for groceries these days.
