Stuck in park, again

I have a 95 Trans Am, automatic transmission with the gearshift on the floor rather than on the steering wheel. Lately we have been having a hard time getting the car out of park. Normally you push on the brake pedal and push in the thumb knob on the gear shift to get the car out of park. Lately we are having a really hard time getting the knob to push in to release the car into gear. Do any of you car repair types have any idea why it is getting so hard to push in this button? Thanks for your help.
