Everybody has their own opinion about how much snow is a lot and am curious to know what you think. Where I am we go crazy when there is just 3 to 4 inches of snow. School shut down and everything. :-) It is crazy here even though that may not be a lot compared to other places.

3-4 inches of snow is alot if you ask me. I wouldn't want to go out when it's snowing anyways. I rather sit at home wrapped in a blanket and sipping hot coco. I think they go with 3-4 inches of snow around here to be consider alot and enough to drive them crazy and close everything down. You're right, it's not as bad as some other places.

You should try to get back down to Padre to enjoy the island (anytime but Spring Break) because it is truly a beautiful place. The first time I went down, I stopped right when we got on the island and bought a t shirt, and the lady at the counter asked me if I had just gotten there because I sure was pale! LOL, me and my friend had a really good laugh at that, pale as we could be for sure!
Anyways, Galveston is pretty too, and they have lots of great shopping, there's nothing more beautiful than sunrise on the seawall.

I don't know where you live at kgwat70, but I'd trade places with you any day! If we shut our schools down for 3-4 inches of snow, our schools would be shut almost all winter. I live in NE Ohio, in what's called the 'snow belt.' We get hit with Lake effect storms that literally dump a foot or more of snow on us at a time! (Lake effect snow is when Lake Erie is not frozen over yet, and the winds coming across the lake blow the moisture into heavy snowfalls.) The town I live in is on the side of the highest elevation in NE Ohio, and we get the brunt of most storms. There are many times where neighboring communities have gotten none, and we have had a couple feet's worth in a day. (No wonder Florida looks so good to Ohio people!)

I am not sure how much is needed here, we have only been here a year and last year we didn't get that much snow. I don't even recall them shutting down the schools.
Now in NY, where we moved from, if there was a storming predicted to be moving in they would close school early or cancel it the night before. We sometimes got totally dumped on and they didn't want the kids to be stuck in the school or out on the dangerous roads incase that would happen.

The most snow we have had in our recent past that I can recall was Valentines 2005. Boy were we suprised! Texas, DFW to be exact doesn't get snow, we get ice. One or two inches and everyones' trying to make snowmen before it melts to take pictures, it's picture worthy when we get anything here, lol.

Yeah, I remember that year. My husband and I drove to South Padre for our first honeymoon. To our surprised, it snowed down there and we didn't get to enjoy much of our vacation. We said if we wanted snow and a cold weather, we could've just stayed back in Iowa. But, we enjoyed our last day there after everything melted really fast. We passed by DFW and Houston, boy, I couldn't believe my eyes. People were going crazy with that snow. Too bad it doesn't snow in Texas because it sounds like you sure do need it once in awhile.

Any snow is a lot!!!
I find certain areas are not very well prepared to deal with snow. Clean up is slow and is usually restricted to main roads. It's pretty to look at, though.

Here, we can get as much as 3-4 inches in an hour or two and it's not uncommon to have 3 feet of snow on the ground.
They close schools a lot more now than they used to (probably out of fear of lawsuits). I only had one snow day in 12 years (when we got 14 inches overnight).

Well, I live in an area where we don't see much Snow. Most of the time it only comes maybe one day a yr. except for up in the Foothills and mountains. The few times we have gotten Snow though, it ends up shutting everything down, as a lot of our areas are hilly, and so it is dangerous to drive there.

The average level of snowfall has fallen drastically here in the United Kingdom over the past 20 years or so, and consequently we rarely get a good depth.
Many moons ago I would have said that anything less than 6 inches would not qualify as a decent snowfall, but now we are lucky if the amount of snow is sufficient to stay white for a couple of hours.
That damned global warming again, and no snowmen.

when ever snow is predicted the whole area shuts down.4 years ago it snowed about 2or3 inches .I listened to the radio and people were taking up to 8 hr to get home from work. The people here don't know how to drive in snow.It only snows about once a year if that much.

People here freak out with just a couple of inches: schools closed, auto accidents, etc. Then, it usually melts by Noon. It's funny to watch. At the first forecast of a little bit iof snow, the grocery stores run out of bread, milk, and toilet paper, like people think they'll be stuck in their homes for days.

I know, 3 to 4 inches of snow is considered a lot here in Vancouver, BC. It usually doesn't snow too much here. Everything shuts down here too. But when people that come from Toronto, they say it's funny because they have snow like triple the size and they still have to go to work, or school.

In my specific town (not the area around here as they all get a lot of snow) any snow is a lot. It generally snows to the point of sticking about once a year. We'll get a tiny bit of snow that doesn't stick every once and awhile throughout winter though. I'm near major ski resorts, though, and could easily reach snow by driving up the freeway.

We don't get much snow here in Virginia Beach, VA, so even the sight of snowflakes in the air excites people. We've had times where we've gotten 14 inches of snow in a matter of hours, but it's not common. A couple of inches of snow on the ground with cold temperatures will shut the schools down.

In winter, I'd say "a lot of snow" would be when it is over 1 meter. But that is for my town, if I go further north in my country (Sweden) in the winter, I'd be dissapointed if it was less than 1 meter! And south of my city, they don't often get over 0,5 meters.
But even though for me 1 meter is a lot of snow, we'd never close the schools or anything for it - we do usually have "a lot of snow" for at least part of the winter (it's a lot, but not unusual, if you see the difference) and it isn't dangerous or anything, it's just... cold lol
Embaressingly, exactly one week ago we had the first snowfall, a big snowstorm with about 3 inches in 4 hours (it's all gone now, by the way) and for some reason, even though we are supposed to be able to handle snow in this country, traffic and undergroundsystem was completelly thrown. The next morning the papers compared Stockholm and how we handled the snow to "a town in the south of Europe in snow" because everything just stopped working!...
